Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:53) TAB Handicap 1050m
I’ll take a chance on 9 Sirfina (Bet Now: $7.00) for the Tony Gollan stable. This bloke has had three public trials, one of which this prep, which came over 1000m here when leading and grabbed late by Devine Grey, but looked to go about his business nicely. Interesting that he holds a nomination for the Golden Rose, so stable must have an opinion of him. Keen to see how he goes.
3 Happy Two Thousand (Bet Now: $2.80) is a son of Love Conquers All for Kacy Fogden who did everything right on debut over 1000m at the Sunny Coast. Jumped well to led, controlled things, quickened up when asked and fought hard late to win in a maiden which looked to have a bit of depth to it. Harder here, but looks a little professional and should give a decent sight.
1 Betaima (Bet Now: $3.40) is a Toby Edmonds trained filly who has done a good job throughout her career, She comes here off the back of a run over 1000m at the Sunny Coast when on speed and fighting hard but was grabbed late by Golly Hutt in a race which has already produced a winner, so the form isn’t too bad. Her best chance of winning will be leading and rolling from the front. Not a long shot but can’t make a case for any other runner.
Race 2. (12:28) QRIC Handicap (80) 2000m
4 Miss Shanti (Bet Now: $4.20) for me. This Chris Waller trained mare was given a sweet ride by Fradd last Saturday at Eagle Farm and she looked home when she hit the front but the stablemate and better stayed Borazon kicked too strongly late and in the end edged away. Like her up to 2000m and she’s done very well on the quick back up previously. Happy to be in her corner.
The Anderson/Heathcoate stable has 2 Our Mantra (Bet Now: $3.00) going really well at the moment. He lumped the 60kg over 2200m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where he tried hard under Robbie Fradd and was there to be run down late but he kicked too well and continued his really good prep. Gets good weight relief this time around and back in trip is no issue.
Back in depth/grade should suit 1 Happy Go Plucky (Bet Now: $5.50). He comes through the Grafton Cup where he got a mile back in the run and was never really a winning threat but did make up ground late behind Sacred Day. That’s Listed form and back to this kind of level, even with the weight rise, he should prove hard to beat against this lot.
Race 3. (13:03) River Junction Handicap 1350m
4 Astro Boy Toy (Bet Now: $3.00) looks to have a decent engine under the hood. Toby Edmonds trains this son of Deep Field, who debuted over 1200m at the Sunny Coast and I liked the way he put them away late. He was challenged early on in the straight but he saw it off and drew away late like a nice horse. 1350m looks fine and this doesn’t appear to be the strongest race going around.
7 Violet (Bet Now: $6.00) is still a maiden for Mick Nolan but her turn isn’t far away. She ran over 1500m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where she tried really hard to reel in Star Of Michelin but the Kendrick trained youngster was too good on the day. Back to 1350m is no issue for her I don’t think and she does have the Saturday metro form next to her name.
5 Biggie (Bet Now: $13.00) is the interesting runner. Andrew Sawden trains this youngster, who was specked at odds when racing at this track/distance last Wednesday and in a fast run race, he surged between runners late when looking gone and came back to win. The class rise is the query with him, but he’s proven here now and can’t knock winning metro form.
Race 4. (13:38) TBQA QLD Breeders Handicap (Class 6) 1050m
11 Stellar Power (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Bryan Dais trained gelding who comes here in winning form having got the job done over 1000m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where Luke Tarrant gave him the A1 run behind the speed and once he got the inside gap, he was always going to be there at the finish and kicked on strongly to win. He’s going well this horse and should take some beating once again.
10 Ditmas (Bet Now: $4.20) is likeable here. Four weeks between runs since racing here when the track became a bog by the time he raced and he couldn’t reel in Crafty Cop. Back on firmer footing, I think he turns the tables and with the claim, he does look to get in very well at the weights.
2 Mogador (Bet Now: $11.00) has returned in good fashion for Gillian Heinrich. Resumed with a confidence boosting win at Toowoomba before going to the Gold Coast where he tried hard but couldn’t quite reel in Amenzel. Like him third up at 1050m here and drawing an inside gate, he gets a soft run off what is likely to be a strong tempo and will have last look at them late.
Race 5. (14:17) Global Gallop Handicap (Class 6) 1600m
4 Hectopascal (Bet Now: $3.20) isn’t far off a win for Tony Gollan. She comes through the Tatts Mile from two weeks ago at Eagle Farm where she tried hard from well back in the run but had to settle for a close up fourth to stablemate Silvera. Can sit much closer in the run from the good draw and despite the significant drop in depth, she hasn’t been hurt at the weights. Hard to beat.
I think Michael Costa might have worked out the key to 3 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $3.50) and that he is a miler. Was going okay over a longer trip without winning, so the stable freshened him up and he ran over the mile at Doomben a few weeks ago, where he sat off a slow tempo yet finished best to score an impressive win. Runs up to that and he’ll go close here.
I reckon 6 Galtero (Bet Now: $12.00) is nearing a win for Tony Gollan and I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s here. He ran over 1350m at Doomben three weeks ago where he sat off a decent clip and tried hard, but was no match late for the sustained speed produced by Rich Affair. Like him up to 1600m with upside, I’m keen on him running a positive race despite a significant leap in depth/grade.
Race 6. (14:57) Eureka Stud Handicap (70) 1350m
6 Sienna Rose (Bet Now: $3.10) is bursting to win a race for Steve O’Dea and I think the mare gets her chance here. Thought she was very good first up over 1200m here behind stablemate Jami Lady before going to 1300m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where she just got too far back in the run but closed off hard late to run second to Sparky Lad. Third up at 1350m, she’ll take some beating.
5 The Administrator (Bet Now: $4.80) has been a model of consistency for Stuart Kendrick and in a winnable race, I think he can measure up. He ran here last Wednesday when near the speed and fighting on quite well late in the piece when second to Sky Lake. That form reads well enough for this.
10 Mr Storm (Bet Now: $6.00) should be a chance here. Bevan Laming trains this gelding, who was really well backed when racing at this track/distance three weeks ago and despite getting cut out of a run early on in the straight, I was expecting him to do a bit more when down the track behind Rich Affair. That was his first run in nearly a month, so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
Race 7. (15:37) Performer @ Aquis Plate (Class 3) 1200m
1200m is short of his best but I reckon 1 Macewen (Bet Now: $7.00) has enough quality to beat these first up. Talented animal for Tony Gollan who is first up, having not raced since March 30 here when down the track and at the end of his prep when beaten six lengths by a really good one in Millard Reaction. Liked the way he trialled recently, he’ll sit back and launch late.
16 Veranes (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Chris Waller filly that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the early part of the Carnival when close up in a 3YO race at Eagle Farm behind Crafty Spirit. Been given a spell and loved the way she found the line under little pressure in a recent Gold Coast. Likely eases back from the wide gate and will be strong at the end of 1200m for sure.
7 Bedtime Stories (Bet Now: $18.00) is an Allan Kehoe trained mare who was well tried when attempting to lead all the way in the Mothers Gift over 1400m on Grafton Cup Day and she gave a really good kick under Jason Collett, but was bloused late by Snapchat Girl. Like her back to 1200m, looks the likely leader and if she doesn’t cop pressure, she’ll take some beating.
Race 8. (16:17) Tim Bell Memorial Handicap 1200m
5 Snoopy (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Chris Munce trained gelding who trialled up well prior to resuming in the Ramornie where he had to do a fair bit work to maintain a spot near the speed and he faded out of the finish late behind Havasay. He’s much better than that and his form last prep doesn’t read too bad for a race like this. Record at Doomben is the only niggle with him.
3 Handsome Thief (Bet Now: $4.40) looks to be going really well for the Chris Meagher stable. He is a month between runs since sitting off a good speed and finishing best in a driving go to get the win. Stack of speed engaged, so he should sit off it and launch at them late, provided he isn’t far away.
I think 1200m will suit the Team Guy trained mare 10 Volkhoff (Bet Now: $27.00). She ran over 1000m at the Sunny Coast last time out where she was pretty much run off her legs early and was forced wide on the turn but picked up and wasn’t too bad late in the piece when fourth to Misery. Reckon a step up in trip will do her no harm and her best is good enough to beat these.
Race 9. (16:52) Diversity Dash Handicap (85) 1350m
This looks a lovely race for the Chris Waller trained 9 The Avenger (Bet Now: $7.00). He resumed over 1400m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where I thought Fradd gave the gelding a peach of a ride and he was there to win 250m out. Just think his condition gave way late when a close up third to Looks Like Elvis. Fitter and from the good draw, he looks really well placed and am keen on him.
11 Sparky Lad (Bet Now: $4.00) isn’t one of mine but concede that Chris Waller has got this bloke going well this prep. First up here saw him run a decent second to New Horizons before going to 1300m at Eagle Farm two weeks back when given a sweet steer by Robbie Fradd just off the speed and the ride won the race. Hard to knock the way he’s going and has to be a threat.
Her recent overall form reads plain, but I’m really keen on 12 Granny Red Shoes (Bet Now: $9.00) running well here. She was well tried when resuming over 1200m at Doomben three weeks ago and she just got too far back in the run, set an impossible task. Loved the way she got to the outside and savaged the line late. I’d be all over her if this was at Eagle Farm, but still happy to give her respect.
