Race 1. (11:20) Warrnambool City Volkswagen 1200m
1 Debating (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top in what is an even 2YO contest. Nick Ryan trains this colt, that debuted just over two weeks ago at Morphettville in a strong 2YO race. He was wide no cover for the trip and was under pressure a fair way out but kept finding the line and was good in defeat behind Heuristic. He has that hard run under the belt, he should get a better run in transit here and the depth isn’t as strong.
Beetroot Williams won the 2YO race yesterday and he’s looking to continue that form here via 2 Loose On Gin (Bet Now: $SP.00), who was on speed throughout when debuting over 1000m at Ballarat and he showed good fight in the straight, but was no match late for Tumbling. Bred to appreciate 1200m and also bred to be fine on wet ground, so he commands respect.
5 Scentify (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an interesting runner. Justify colt for the Maher/Eustace camp that debuts off the back of three jumpouts, the latest at Ararat where he got off the speed and closed off nicely under riding. He’s bred to eat up further than this but he has shown in his jumpout work he does have a bit of sharpness about him, and is in the right camp.
Race 2. (11:50) Bottle-O Warrnambool Mdn Plate 1400m
7 Sierra De Gredos (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a son of Almanzor for the Price/Kent camp that is on debut. He’s been well educated for start one, with a Spring prep before coming back this time in and his latest jumpout was a win at Mortlake where he won well and seemingly had plenty in hand. He’s another that looks like he’s ready to go for this, so watch the market.
1 Actaeon (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Symon Wilde trained son of Tavistock that resumes. He had a two run Summer prep to start his career and placed each time, the latest coming here on New Years Eve in what looked a strong maiden. First up at 1400m signals intent IMO and has had a good grounding via jumpout work, plus stable finds Ben Melham, so he has a bit in his corner.
3 Comb Over Con (Bet Now: $SP.00) is second up for Tom Dabernig after resuming on Stawell Cup Day. He had the suck run behind the speed and was there to win at the top of the straight but just battled late in the piece behind impressive winner Lord Turnberry. Better for that run under the belt and with scratchings, the race has fallen away.
Race 3. (12:20) Creece Glass & Glazing Mdn 1700m
2 Fortis In Armis (Bet Now: $SP.00) would be a moral in a 1600m maiden back home in SA. Interesting that Michael Hickmott sends him here, potentially as a travel companion for Taunting? I was red hot on him last time at Strathalbyn but was very one paced when Eaton asked him to go, eventually running second to Vee Rod. Big tick is more ground…but there is clearly more depth to this compared to last time.
6 Untamed Spirit (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been pretty good in three career outings and is hard fit for this. He ran at Benalla last time where he got back in the run and took a while to wind into his work but was solid to the line when third to Saint Lazare, beaten around a length. Like him up to 1700m and with M Dee aboard, he has a bit going for him.
11 Woodline (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Starcraft filly for Lindsey Smith that is on debut. She was formerly with Danny O’Brien but now finds herself here. Her jumpout work has been a touch on the quiet side but on debut at 1700m tells me the first run isn’t a total waste, so I’d watch the market and see what it does with her.
Race 4. (12:55) Decron Dunroe Stpl (Bm120) 3450m
3 Roland Garros (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top in what looks a two horse race. He is with Maher/Eustace after a stint with Adrian Corboy. He trialled a couple of weeks ago here and jumped/moved very well to my eye when a distant second to a star, Flying Agent. The main danger, Count Zero, ran third in the trial, and to my eye, Roland Garros went by far the better. Off the trial, he’s the one.
6 Mighty Oasis (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a good record at Warrnambool and will appreciate firmer footing. The track was an absolute bog at Pakenham last time and he struggled to pick his feet up in the conditions when down the track behind Hurry Cane. Gets back onto a firmer deck and IMO gets a big jockey upgrade with star Kiwi Shaun Phelan taking the ride. One for exotics.
12 Wazuzu (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the swimmer in the field so I wouldn’t totally pen him. His recent run came behind Hurry Cane at Pakenham where he struggled to pick up and was a bit on the plain side when finishing down the track. He is 1/1 at the track and did trial well prior to Pakenham. If there is one at a price you’d like to speck, I think he is indeed that.
Race 5. (13:30) W'bool G'hound Cup Tonight Mdn 1700m
8 Navajo Warrior (Bet Now: $SP.00) gets the nod. Henry Dwyer trained gelding that is knocking on the door to win a maiden, the latest run coming over 1850m on Terang Cup Day when second to dominant winner Whispering Lady. He’s had a jumps trial to tick him over and won quite well to my eye. That should sharpen him up for this and the stable is in form.
10 Shearman Dyer (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1700m for Maher/Eustace. He ran in a 1500m maiden at Geelong last time where he did plenty wrong but liked the way he found the line late in the piece to run third. The knock is the race rated poorly, but he’s in the right camp, gets a rise in trip as well as a jockey upgrade with John Allen taking over.
2 Buddie Rippa (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a knockout chance for Aaron Purcell and I wouldn’t totally pen him. He resumed on Terang Cup Day when racing on a bog and just whacked to the line to run third, but his late splits weren’t too bad. Like him up in trip and with Linda sticking, I do think they’ll be more positive and with that, he’s in the mix.
Race 6. (14:05) Galleywood Hrdl 3200m
I think if this track isn’t completely cast come jump time here, 1 Saunter Boy (Bet Now: $SP.00) is clearly the one they have to beat. He won this race last year and looks to be ticking along nicely for it. I would be very forgiving of him last time at Pakenham given the track was a complete bog and he couldn’t pick his feet up late when second to Blandford Lad, who is a swimmer. I’ll bank on him bringing his best and his class.
2 Blandford Lad (Bet Now: $SP.00) is fast becoming the second best hurdler in Australia behind Saunter Boy so it should set up for a great contest. He was too good for Saunter Boy at Pakenham last time but he got conditions to suit and a 6.5kg weight pull, which in those conditions, was telling late. Meets him 4.5kg worse here so with that, I can’t see him beating Saunter Boy, but should that horse be off his game, he’s the pony to beat.
9 Fabalot (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a first four contender. Symon Wilde trains this gelding, who ran in a Pakenham Hurdle last time out where he attempted to lead throughout and tried hard, but just couldn’t quite finish it off and tired late when fourth to Nelson. Looks like he has been set for the race and the stable won the Brierly yesterday so they are in form.
Race 7. (14:45) Sinclair Wilson (Bm70) 1000m
Just landed the way of 5 Field Of Flutes (Bet Now: $SP.00). Son of Deep Field for Maher/Eustace that comes here off a freshen up, having not raced since March 23 at Warracknabeal when a notable drifter in betting and ran accordingly, sitting on speed and couldn’t quite finish it off, running third. Lands in front here and is 1/1 on wet ground, so in a clear two horse race, he’ll do me.
4 Stay In Touch (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Maher/Eustace mare that resumes. Her last run came on Jan 28 over 1000m at The Valley when producing an end of prep run, finishing down the track behind Mamaragan. She is a fresh winner from the past and is 2/2 on heavy ground, albeit the form from those races is a touch suspect, so I think watch the market and see what it does.
9 Jagged Edge (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a distant third pick. He’s been a ripper since joining Con Kelly but he looks comfortably held by the Maher/Eustace pair. He ran over 975m at Swan Hill last time when near the speed throughout and battled to the line late in the piece behind Superhard. He runs third. Can’t see him troubling the other pair.
Race 8. (15:20) Wangoom Hcp 1200m
9 Taunting (Bet Now: $SP.00) has got the Stakes win on the board and can now head towards a Goodwood and stamp himself as a leading chance for the locals. Market said he was a moral when racing a few weeks ago in the Railway at Oakbank and under a peach from Eaton, she rode the ideal race on the gelding, getting the suck run behind the speed before getting clear air and in a driving go, was impressive in winning. He was only second up, so he has good room for improvement and back on the bigger track, he appeals big time.
1 Frankie Pinot (Bet Now: $SP.00) has come back in super order for Team McEvoy and is one of the key threats. Really caught the eye fresh at The Valley in the Abell behind She’s All Class before going to the Victoria Handicap where he was near last in the run and spotted them a big head start but loved the way he found the line late in the piece to run second to Cardinal Gem. Hard to beat if he can settle closer.
12 Sacred Palace (Bet Now: $SP.00) has home track advantage and has been set for the race you’d assume. Several weeks between runs since racing over 1100m at Bendigo and surged hard late from off the speed, just missing out on picking El Salto in a driving go. Saves his best for 1200m and right down in the weights, give in the track, he appeals.
Race 9. (16:00) Prydes Easifeed (Bm64) 1700m
19 Reservoir Dog (Bet Now: $SP.00) gets a start after scratchings and with that the case, he’s on top. This three year old resumed a couple of weeks ago at Geelong and I thought closed his race off with real purpose late in the piece when second to Miss Keeler. He has run well on heavy ground previously and the Busuttin/Young camp love to find a winner this Carnival.
14 Power Of Song (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found winning form and she can certainly go on with it. Just took too long to wind into her work two back on Stawell Cup Day before going to the mile at Ararat where she gave them a start and a beating, finishing over the top for a strong win and the race did rate through the roof. Racing like 1700m will be ideal and strikes a winnable race.
5 Outback Jack (Bet Now: $SP.00) resumes for Lindsey Smith and I do think is dangerous. He is best suited at 2000m+ but he has shown previously he can be effective at a shorter trip, and is a winner at 1700m. The recent jumpout work has been more than encouraging to the eye and should they go silly in front, look for him to be one of the strongest late. Market watch for sure.
Race 10. (16:30) The Whalers Hotel (Bm70) 1400m
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for 2 Montather (Bet Now: $SP.00). Maher/Eustace trained gelding that resumed several weeks ago at Bendigo over 1100m where he got back in the run and took a while to wind into his work but was good to the line without threatening behind El Salto. He is a good horse when right and fitter, getting a rise in trip, he’s a big improver, and a speck for me in the get out.
3 Sandy Prince (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win. Team Hayes trained gelding that is a month between runs since racing over 1400m at Sandown when just off the speed and was there tow in but just found one better on the line in Lake Tai. He swims so he gets conditions to suit and with the claim for Prebble, he is in very well. Leading contender.
5 Mister Me (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Symon Wilde trained gelding that swims and has good upside compared to most. He resumed on Terang Cup Day where he was met with good market support and tried his guts out but first up, condition just gave way when third to Danaustar. Fitter and back on the home deck, conditions in his corner, he only runs well.
