The big guns, including Winx, will be out on display at Randwick this Saturday for a cracking program that gives us a real taste of what’s to come over the next two months. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:10) ANZ Bloodstock News Handicap (70) 1300m
6 Super Ex (Bet Now: $3.80) is a promising colt for Mark Newnham who looks ready for the Saturday step up after dominating them at the midweeks at Canterbury when sitting near the speed under Tommy Berry before being clicked to go and he careered away. Bit more depth here but he looks very likely.
I’m very wary of 3 Beau Geste (Bet Now: $2.60). Smart looking colt for Godolphin and James Cummings who resumes here. Has only had the one start, which came at the midweeks at Canterbury in May where he sat back in a slowly run race but pounced when asked and drew right away for a smart win, and ran good sectionals. Loved what I have seen in two trials, he draws a soft gate and does look the X factor.
2 Andaz (Bet Now: $7.50) is the one that interests me here. Chris Waller trained three year old who makes his NSW debut after kicking off his career in Melbourne, where he won two for two, the second coming down the Flemington straight. He’s untapped and I’m not really sure how good he is. This race will tell us.
Race 2. (12:45) National Jockeys Trust Handicap (85) 2000m
8 Up ‘N’ Rolling (Bet Now: $1.55) is a progressive type for Chris Waller who has promise a fair bit during his short time in Australia and he looks set for a good campaign off the back of a spank job of his rivals fresh at Canterbury where he careered away under Bowman and showed signs he could feature in better races than benchmark grade. This will be a good test but I think he can measure up.
4 Multifacets (Bet Now: $7.00) is a tough customer that is a stablemate of the top tip. He is a fair while between drinks but I didn’t mind his effort three weeks back at Rosehill when a gutsy third to King Kiv over the Rosehill 2000m. Looked to have every chance there but he has been kept fit with a trial win, and that would do his confidence the world of good, plus he looks the speed.
1 Admiral Jello (Bet Now: $7.50) is knocking on the door to win one for Kris Lees. Thought he was a good thing in the Taree Cup last time out but the weight and slow tempo didn’t help him at all and was no match late for Pirate Ben. Does like racing at Randwick and he should now be hard fit/ready to go.
Race 3. (13:20) TAB Supports Jockeys Trust Mile (83) 1600m
4 Jaminzah (Bet Now: $3.60) is a gelding in ripping form at the moment for the Chris Waller yard. Been racing in Melbourne and has strung together a couple of wins, both at Flemington over 1600m and 1700m respectively and the key to him has been riding him cold, with cover and saving him for late, which has worked. This isn’t a strong race so if he holds his form, he’s the one.
3 More To Gain (Bet Now: $4.20) is a talented galloper for the Turner/Poletti stable that was well backed when resuming over 1350m at Rosehill a few weeks back and he loomed large to win but his condition just gave out late when fourth to Most Exalted. Would love him at a mile on a wet track, but 1600m here on a firm surface should be okay.
7 Mandalong Kiss (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Gary Nickson trained mare who could represent some value here. Her effort three weeks back at Rosehill in a mares race behind Elouera was tidy I thought. Finished eighth of eleven, but was warming to the task late. Randwick mile should be ideal and is a knockout chance for mine.
Race 4. (14:00) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1400m
Siding with 5 Schedule (Bet Now: $7.00) here. Mack Griffith trained galloper who is a proven Highway performer that resumes here. Ran in a couple of Highways at the end of last prep and ran well before being tipped out. Loved his recent trial at Bathurst run in good time and he did it comfortably. Flies fresh and McEvoy on.
9 Count Cumani (Bet Now: $3.00) is the interesting one. Matty Dunn trained four year old who is putting together a nice record, the latest result being a dominant win at Ipswich but that form hasn’t stood up since, which is the big query. But, he’s in the right stable and they have to be included.
8 Makfi Lass (Bet Now: $8.00) does look the value at nearly double figures. Smart mare for Brett Cavanough who is four weeks between runs since racing in a Highway at this track/distance where she didn’t receive the greatest of luck in running behind Care To Think in a race where the form has held up. Been given the freshen up, senior jock on and is the value for mine here.
Race 5. (14:35) Concorde Stakes 1000m
Anything other than a win for 3 Spieth (Bet Now: $2.40) would be a surprise. He has promised a fair bit throughout his career but this prep will tell us if he is a contender or pretender. Needs to stand up here and I think he can off the back off a sharp trial win at Warwick Farm where he went about his business beautifully in winning. Looks ready to go.
5 Nieta (Bet Now: $3.70) is a very good mare that resumes for John Thompson. She is absolutely explosive when on song and that was the case to an extent in the Autumn but she didn’t pull up 100% after the Ortensia during the Scone Carnival. Been given a good break and has trialled up really well for her return.
2 The Monstar (Bet Now: $14.00) is a tough sprinter for Brett Cavanough who is always thereabouts, but whether he can beat these on a firm surface is the unknown. Did a really good job in the Missile four weeks back here when third to Invincible Gem, on a soft track. Firmer surface here and should lead.
Race 6. (15:10) Furious Stakes 1200m
3 Champagne Cuddles (Bet Now: $3.40) clearly on top for me. High class filly for Bjorn Baker who resumed in the Silver Shadow a fortnight back and I thought her effort was outstanding. Got left flatfooted when the pair in front dashed clear but I loved her final 100m when closing off with real purpose to just miss. She has the brilliance/upside. Keen on her.
1 Formality (Bet Now: $3.20) did a really good job for the Hayes/Dabernig team in the Silver Shadow two weeks ago. Led all the way under McEvoy and she was tough, as she has showed right throughout her career. Was there to be beaten but she kept finding to get the job done. Looks the leader again and should take some beating.
2 Whispered Secret (Bet Now: $15.00) is a quality filly first up for Kris Lees. Formerly with James Cummings, this Gooree filly will be better over further but she is talented in her own right, as we saw in the Fernhill and Champagne in the Autumn. Been given two solid trials to prepare for her return and I’d watch the market and see what it does.
Race 7. (15:50) Tatts Club Tramway Stakes 1400m
It’s all about 11 Winx (Bet Now: $1.09).What she did first up in the Warwick Stakes was that of a champion and indeed the best in the world. Had no right to win after missing the start and the way the race panned out. Still, she produced some brilliant finishing splits and produced a remarkable finish. Enjoy the show.
Great to see 1 Sense Of Occasion (Bet Now: $21.00) back at the races. Kris Lees probably hasn’t got the credit he should get for what he has done with this horse and what he has turned him into. In any other era, he’d be a serious Cox Plate contender. Still, he resumes here and looks rather forward in condition off the back of two nice trials.
Big fan of 8 Sarrasin (Bet Now: $35.00) and his effort first up over 1400m at Rosehill three weeks back was outstanding. It was a messy race but it was a day where those near the speed were advantaged. Still, despite being off the bit a fair way out, I loved the way he closed his race off late. He’ll eat up the extra furlong and bigger track.
Race 8. (16:30) Schweppes Handicap (95) 1400m
Siding with 6 Ecuador (Bet Now: $3.70). He is a beauty for the Waterhouse/Bott yard who resumed in the Warwick Stakes and did an outstanding job on speed, leading most of the way before being grabbed late by Foxplay, then Winx. That is high class form, the best in Australia right now. Should lead, dominate and take a power of beating.
7 Invincible Gem (Bet Now: $3.90) gets the nod for me here. Classy mare for Kris Lees who has been kept on ice since resuming in the Missile Stakes and aided by a peach from Corey Brown, she wore down stablemate Le Romain to score a fab first up triumph. Tuned up with a trial last week to tick her over for this and she does love Randwick.
9 Tom Melbourne (Bet Now: $6.00) was the obvious inclusion here. His effort first up at Rosehill. He still looked to travel keenly in the run but nit as bad as what he can. From the home turn onwards, it was sickening if you were on. Eventually got clear to just miss. If he has come on from that, he will take some beating here.
Race 9. (17:10) Schweppes Handicap (95) 1400m
7 Washington Heights (Bet Now: $1.90) does look the obvious. Explosive type for Gerald Ryan who has been outstanding in two runs since coming back from Honkers. Resumed over 1200m and produced a lovely turn of foot to win before stepping up to the 1400m in what was a very messy race and I think he probably wins with clear air behind Kingsguard, who ran well in the Rowley Mile, so the form has held up. Randwick 1400m looks perfect.
4 Rocket Commander (Bet Now: $5.50) does look a key threat. She was specked at odds last time out in the Toy Show and while she didn’t get the win, gee she tried really hard on speed, fighting on to run a courageous fourth to Sweet Redemption. I think she will take great improvement from that and third up last time in she won at Stakes level.
I’m going to be very wary of 1 Marenostro (Bet Now: $23.00). I know he hasn’t done anything in some time, but this is one of the easier races he has contested for a very long time. Been given a break, transferred for Gayna Williams and gets the claim for McDougall. If he brought his best, he’d go close.
