Moonee Valley will be the focus of the racing world this Saturday for Cox Plate Day and the chance to see history with Winx going for three straight Cox Plates. The weather is overcast, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:10) Inglis Banner 1000m
6 Setsuna (Bet Now: $4.00) gets the nod for me here in an always tricky two year old event. Waterhouse/Bott trained filly who was unwanted in betting when debuting in the Gimcrack but she showed tremendous fight on speed, only to be nabbed right on the peg. That run should bring her right on for this and looks the one to beat.
5 Jawwal (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Snitzel on debut for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This colt trialled up last Friday at Flemington and as to what he beat, it’s unknown the quality, and the time was nothing special, but gee I liked the way he moved, bolting to the front under triple wraps. Looks a real pro and draws a sweet gate.
10 Seabrook (Bet Now: $9.00) is a daughter of Hinchinbrook on debut for the Mick Price team. This girl has had just the one jump out, which came over 700m at Caulfield where she sat on speed and though under pressure, she responded nicely and looked to do everything right. Think she can measure up here for sure.
Race 2. (12:40) Strathmore Community Bendigo Bank Handicap 955m
2 Badajoz (Bet Now: $3.10) is the hard fit/in form sprinter here and you have to say he is just racing so well at the moment. Given an absolute peach from McEvoy to win over the 1100m at Caulfield on Underwood Day, getting the box seat sit before angling clear and dashing best to win. I like he comes back to this trip, so he can explode off a hot speed.
4 Rock ‘N’ Gold (Bet Now: $5.00) is a very good horse for the Ellerton/Zahra team. He’s no star but he always runs well and has a booming finish on him, like we saw in the Apache Cat on Cranbourne Cup Day. Sat off the speed, waited for the gap to appear and once he got it, game over. Fab record at the 955m and he’ll be savaging the line late.
1 Gun Case (Bet Now: $9.00) is another who has a great record at the track/distance. He too comes through the Apache Cat where I thought he did a good job to stick on as he did given the brutal speed they went in front, setting it up for Rock ‘N’ Gold. Back to the 955m is ideal and if he can get on speed without spending too many petrol tickets, he’s right in this.
Race 3. (13:15) Telstra Phoneworlds Stakes 1200m
4 Trekking (Bet Now: $3.30) looks a really good bet here. Talented three year old for Godolphin and James Cummings who went no further after an even run in the McNeil behind Merchant Navy. Freshened up and his trial a couple of weeks back at Flemington was outstanding. Looks very much ready to go here. Keen.
1 Single Bullet (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a definite threat here. Thought he was ridden a treat by Angland in the Roman Consul. He put the horse in the race early, having him on speed, he looked to travel well and kicked, but was no match for Viridine. That run should toughen him up for this easier assignment and he rates highly.
9 Eptimum (Bet Now: $8.50) rises a fair bit in grade here but he’s been excellent this time in for the Toby Edmonds team. Won well fresh at Ballarat before going to Bendigo where he came off the bit a fair way out but I loved the way he closed off when pressured and dug deep for the win. He can measure up here.
Race 4. (13:50) Ladbrokes Crockett Stakes 1200m
The good thing of the Melbourne Spring Carnival is here in the shape of 8 Demerara (Bet Now: $2.80 ODDS BOOST). Very good filly for Godolphin and James Cummings who is three for three. Caned them fresh at Gosford before going to the Rosehill midweeks where she bolted up again and won with a bit in hand. Now in Melbourne and she looked outstanding in a Flemington jump out. Only bad luck beats her.
2 Jorda (Bet Now: $5.50) just needs to overcome the tricky draw to be a threat. Thought she had every chance a fortnight back in the Thoroughbred Club but Invincible Star was dominant and spanked them. This filly appeared to work well on Tuesday morning here and James Cummings did say that morning in a video for Godolphin this was his best chance for Moonee Valley.
10 Tarcoola Spirit (Bet Now: $17.00) is a handy filly for Jason Warren who worked very well here on Tuesday morning and is getting towards peak fitness I’d suggest. Ran four weeks back at Mornington where she ran a game second to the heavily backed Ultra Smart. Had a minor foot problem after that but her work on Tuesday indicates she is over that.
Race 5. (14:25) Powerflo Solutions Stakes 1600m
5 Invincibella (Bet Now: $2.90) looks the one here. Smart mare for Chris Waller who has gone to a new level this preparation, winning two from two in impressive fashion, the latest coming a fortnight back at Randwick where she chased hard and eventually got the better of them. Moonee Valley mile looks ideal and remains down in the weights.
Convinced that 6 Oregon’s Day (Bet Now: $4.00) is flying. She just can’t draw a gate and that is the case once again. Got stuck wide no cover last time out in the Weekend Hussler and that pretty much was the end of her winning hopes but she stuck on really well in defeat behind Fast ‘N’ Rocking. If she gets cover from the draw and has last say, she’ll look the winner at some stage.
1 French Emotion (Bet Now: $11.00) is a classy mare for Chris Waller who has an excellent record at the Valley so don’t discount her. Closing splits were very good fresh in the Blazer behind Now Or Later in a race which didn’t really suit her. Has a really good second up record and given her rating, she’s very well in at the weights.
Race 6. (15:00) McCafe Moonee Valley Gold Cup 2500m
Have to side with 1 Big Duke (Bet Now: $2.00) here. Did a very good job in the Metropolitan I thought before going to the St Leger where he was confidently backed late and aided by such a sweet ride from Avdulla, the import did it comfortably and won with a bit in reserve. Has a good record at the Valley and this will tell us if he is a Cup contender or not.
3 Auvray (Bet Now: $5.50) has really turned the corner since joining Richard Freedman. Toughed it out strongly to win the Colin Stephen two back before going to the St Leger where he dashed up the inside and loomed to beat Big Duke but that horse packed too many punches. He did nothing in four runs racing anti-clockwise last Spring but he is a different horse now.
5 Who Shot Thebarman (Bet Now: $6.00) ran well in this race last year and I think he can do something similar. Just forget he went around in the St Leger. Was caught wide all the way and on that track that day, that was suicidal. Had to drop out and he did. Should get a suck run behind them here and can fill a place.
Race 7. (15:35) italktravel Fillies Classic 1600m
2 Banish (Bet Now: $6.00) looks the way to go here. Godolphin filly for James Cummings who ran over 1400m on Cranbourne Cup Day and I thought she did a really good job to get the win considering she was back on a day where making ground was at times difficult but she rounded them and won impressively. Step up to the mile is perfect and she rates highly.
4 Mintha (Bet Now: $4.40) will appreciate the drop in depth after contesting the Thousand Guineas where I think on face value, she ran below expectations, but keep in mind they absolutely crawled in that race and really you couldn’t make ground out wide, which she tried to do. Much better suited at this level and is a definite threat.
7 Nothin’ On Me (Bet Now: $13.00) is the knockout chance here. Aaron Purcell trained filly who absolutely spanked them last time out in breaking her maiden status at Pakenham. Hit the front and just had no idea what to do so the 1.7L margin really flattered her opposition. She’ll eat up the mile here and does have upside.
Race 8. (16:10) Schweppes Crystal Mile 1600m
I think 3 Burning Front (Bet Now: $5.00) is a great each way play here. Tough bugger for the Weir camp who comes through the Moonga last saturday where he did a power of work on speed, copped pressure, yet still kicked and was fighting hard until stablemate Ulmann, who had the suck run, ran over the top. Tricky gate, but I am hoping Zahra forces the issue and goes forward. Loves the track, great record on the back up. Keen.
4 Religify (Bet Now: $5.00) is a beauty for Chris Waller. He’s no superstar but he does everything right and when it comes to a fight, much like Burning Front, he doesn’t shy away. Looked home in the Weekend Hussler but the race fit Fast ‘N’ Rocking just nabbed him late. Should come right on, Bowman takes over, and his work here on Tuesday was good.
I want to be a bit forgiving of 7 Antonio Giuseppe (Bet Now: $9.50) in the Metropolitan. To the eye, he was disappointing, but he wasn’t given much hope with the ride from Moreira, getting caught wide and doing too much work in the run. I think back to 1600m and back to WFA are big ticks. Class wise, he does have a margin on these.
Race 9. (17:00) Ladbrokes Cox Plate 2040m
Just sit back and enjoy history. Enjoy something we may never see again. A horse winning three straight Cox Plates and barring misfortune, that is what 8 Winx (Bet Now: $1.15) will do here. The ear muffs came off, she went to Flemington for the Turnbull and she fair dinkum gave them a proper galloping lesson. Yes, form didn’t exactly hold up in the Caulfield Cup…or at Seymour on Sunday, but she does that to whatever she faces. It’ll be special to watch.
2 Gailo Chop (Bet Now: $21.00) is a high quality animal for the Darren Weir who was given a lovely ride by Zahra to win the Caulfield Stakes a fortnight back, controlling things from the front and kicking superbly under pressure. That form didn’t exactly hold up in the Caulfield Cup outside Johannes Vermeer, but he looks the leader and will give a sight.
3 Humidor (Bet Now: $26.00) back to 2040m and back to WFA are big ticks for this very good horse. I think just forget he went around in the Caulfield Cup last Saturday. Ridden far too close to the speed and that left him gassed at the pointy end. If ridden cold, he will be much more effective and with his best manners, he will go close to getting a place.
Race 10. (17:45) Drummond Golf Vase 2040m
I think OTI will win the race. Hard to separate Vin De Dance and 9 Aloisia (Bet Now: $2.60) but I’ve sided with the latter. Her win in the Thousand Guineas was outstanding. She was five weeks between runs, she had plenty of improvement to come yet she beat up the best milers of her age/sex and did it easily. This path towards the Oaks has been used before via Jameka. Think Aloisia can follow the footsteps.
5 Vin De Dance (Bet Now: $10.00) does look the obvious threat. His Australian debut last Wednesday at Caulfield was very good. Got back, near the rail, held up and was having trouble getting clear but he attacked the line late behind Temple Of Bel. He looks an ideal Derby candidate and should take some beating here.
7 The Sledgehammer (Bet Now: $23.00) is a really nice horse who could run well in the Derby, but he has to be running top three at worst to warrant or even gain a start. Given a lovely ride by Williams on Cranbourne Cup Day and to the eye, he looked as if he got the bob but the photo went the other way. He’ll eat up the tough 2040m here and is the one with fresh legs/upside.
