Eight races will be run and won on the Parks track at Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:32) Winning Edge Presentations Handicap (70) 1550m
Tricky race but I’m in the corner of 5 Sowpods (Bet Now: $13.00). Was with him when he ran in a maiden on Balaklava Cup Day and I thought the win had good merit to it. He was under pressure early on and was there to be run down, but he kept finding under Tourneur and on the line, he was holding his rivals. Off that, 1550m should be fine and stable is going great guns.
1 Pierro’s Promise (Bet Now: $4.40) is a John Hyam trained three year old that had been trialling solidly prior to resuming over 1200m at Murray Bridge where he got back and found the line nicely in defeat when third to Zume Forward, beaten just over three lengths but it was an encouraging return. Gets weight relief and Raquel Clark remains on, plus has upside.
Back to this sort of level should suit 4 Exalted Ambition (Bet Now: $7.00). Solid maiden winner over 1700m at Gawler before contesting the Morphettville Guineas where he was outclassed behind Bonvicini. He’s not a Stakes class horse, so back to a Benchmark 70 over the 1550m looks more his go, and off the maiden, I do give him a rough outside winning chance.
Race 2. (14:07) Metal-Link Handicap (80) 2250m
Gee he’s a beauty 3 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $6.50). Just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. He was given a sweet steer by Fawke over 2000m on the course proper two weeks ago and once he popped off the back of the speed, he looked like he would get another win next to his name, but couldn’t quite get past Arty Lucas in a driving go. Up in trip suits and is a clear threat.
1 Charossa (Bet Now: $1.90) is also down to run on Friday night at the Valley, but if he runs here, he’ll go very close to winning. He ran in the Tokyo City Cup last Saturday and tried hard, but for mine, he had his chance to win. Was just no match for Single Handed. Off that, up to 2250m has to be a question mark, especially with 61kg, but the depth isn’t as strong and he has class.
8 Cobbers Mate (Bet Now: $34.00) rises in class/depth but Ryan Balfour has him going well. He ran over 2100m at Gawler last Wednesday and if you were on, apologies for bringing up the nightmare. He should have won but just had no luck in the straight when having plenty to offer. Not sure he wins, but the trip should be no issue, he’s hard fit and racing well, so one for multiples.
Race 3. (14:42) John Cross 90th Birthday Handicap (70) 1000m
Surely class gets 1 Li’l Kontra (Bet Now: $3.40) home? She was the best juvenile in SA last season, racing nearly every week it seemed but raced very well, including a couple of Stakes wins. Likely to head to Melbourne for the Spring after this, so will improve on whatever she does here, but a recent jumpout was quite good and she does have the class factor, which may well get her home.
2 Grinzinger Express (Bet Now: $4.80) is a decent short course horse and back to his own age here, he appeals. Found Garner a bit too sharp two back before going to Gawler last Wednesday where he took on the older horses but was impressive in getting the job done over 1100m. I think at this level, 1000m is his go, and back to his own age, he definitely appeals.
I’m keen on Li’l Kontra, but I’m 100% having something small each way 6 Puissance Dusoleil (Bet Now: $7.00), who is on debut here, and Peter Blanch isn’t really a trainer that throws them in the deep end, especially at start one, so really interesting he kicks her off here. I’m keen on her as a horse. Loved the way she went in a recent trial here and was the standout of the morning. Think she’s stupid odds.
Race 4. (15:17) M&J Chickens Handicap (2MW) 1550m
I think slightly back in depth and a bit of cover will suit 3 Blue Morpho (Bet Now: $4.80). She attempted to lead all the way over 1500m on the course proper a fortnight ago and I don’t think leading is her go given the majority of the time she’s ridden cold and with cover. Did a decent enough job to stick on like she did when a close up fourth to Flop. Hard to beat with a more conservative steer.
6 Nistaan (Bet Now: $1.70) looks a really good prospect for the McEvoy team and despite this being his toughest test this prep, confident he runs well. Toyed with them at Balaklava two back before racing over 1400m on the course proper here when on speed and when asked for the effort by Vorster, the class kicked in and he spanked them. Just needs to stretch it out to the 1550m.
7 Marina (Bet Now: $7.50) has been up a little while for John Hickmott but his overall form has been solid. In saying that, there were signs that he might be at the end of the prep last start after sitting on speed and was a beaten horse at the top of the straight in a disappointing performance given he was hard in the market. He’s better than that…just depends if there’s upside left.
Race 5. (15:57) Romeo's Family Raceday Handicap (70) 1400m
Bit of a nothing race this but I’ll tip 4 Going Gaga (Bet Now: $4.40), who has been excellent at his past two. Found the line with purpose two back behind Dexter You Devil, who bolted up last Saturday to frank the form. Then backed up a week later and was enormous in defeat behind Nistaan after sitting no closer than four wide for the trip. Been given a month off and the depth here looks thin. If he gets luck from the draw, he’s the one.
1 Buried Treasure (Bet Now: $3.30) looks suited back to this level. Looked in need of the run first up behind Kemalpasa before having a little freshen up and racing behind that horse again three weeks ago, but was better. Kemalpasa would be odds on against this field, so that form reads well enough for this and he’s third up now, so he should just about be ready re fitness.
7 Star Status (Bet Now: $6.00) is a handy four year old for the Macdonald/Gluyas team that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since finishing near last in the SA Derby won by Qafila after getting on speed. He was just outclassed and at the end of a pretty long prep. Been given a good break and I thought his trial last week behind Resurge was quite good. Keen to see how he goes fresh.
Race 6. (16:37) Spring Carnival Handicap (75) 1400m
Happy to butter up with 2 Flop (Bet Now: $5.00). Was keen on her running well over 1500m on the course proper two weeks ago and thanks to an absolute peach of a ride from Stubby, the mare got the job done impressively. She was only third up there, so she’ll improve off that I’m sure and last time in, she did get better as the prep got deeper before being tired at the end. Keen on her.
1 Pass The Glass (Bet Now: $16.00) is a daughter of Hard Spun resuming for the Sue Jaensch stable, that has struggled recently when coming to town, and keep in mind this girl is a staying mare, so resuming in town interests me. She hasn’t raced since placing in the Penola Cup in April. She’ll be better over a bit further, but 1400m first up tells me she’s not far off the mark re fitness.
3 Lucky Flipper (Bet Now: $17.00) had looked good at the jumpouts prior to resuming over 1200m at Murray Bridge (Metro) when tailed off last behind Magic Sunset, pulling up with Atrial Fibrillation. Ordered to trial and loved the way she looked when at Gawler a couple of weeks back behind Alaskan Jade. Proven city performer, so want to give her another chance at decent odds.
Race 7. (17:17) Leconfield & Richard Hamilton Wines Handicap (85) 1250m
6 Kemalpasa (Bet Now: $3.50) is flying for the Jolly camp. He was three weeks between runs when racing at this track/distance three weeks ago where he got the lovely sit just off the speed before getting the splits and clear air before dashing clear late and winning impressively. Creeping up in the weights, but he’s in ripping form and is yet to run a bad race this time in.
9 Kabini (Bet Now: $3.50) is going okay at the moment for Barry Brook. She comes through the Kemalpasa race from three weeks ago where she was back near last in the run and seemingly in a tricky spot, but picked up late and was good without really threatening behind the talented Jolly 4YO. Little break between runs and her best is clearly good enough to beat these.
8 Exalted Adam (Bet Now: $41.00) can be an improver here at odds. Grant Young trains this gelding, who was specked at odds when resuming here three weeks ago but nothing went right for him in the run, getting caught wide no cover on speed and was a beaten horse on the turn when last behind Kemalpasa. He’s better than that, so have to give him another chance here.
Race 8. (17:55) TAB Handicap (70) 1000m
Happy to be with 10 Suplex City (Bet Now: $3.50) for Will Clarken. He hasn’t raced since August 31 when getting a mile off them in the run before Callow saved really good ground by hugging the inside and he charged late, but just missed out when a close up fourth to Aten. Fast run 1000m looks perfect and provided he isn’t far away on the turn, I think he’ll be too good.
3 Domination (Bet Now: $5.00) is a speed demon for Grant Young who will look the winner most of the way. He resumed in the feature sprint on Balaklava Cup Day and gave a really good kick but just felt the pinch the final 50m when third to All Over Bosanova. Has a good record at the track and clearly saves his best for the 1000m. He’ll lead and look the winner…can he cling on?
Great to see 5 Call Me Curtis (Bet Now: $26.00) back at the races for Craig Curtis. He hasn’t raced since March 2018 when down the track behind Tatoosh, who has since gone on to be Stakes performed, so that form clearly reads well for a Benchmark 70. Just a matter of fitness, but he’s had a trial as well as a Murray Bridge jumpout to tune up for a return, so keen to see how he goes.
