Some of the better class three year olds will strut their stuff in the San Domenico Stakes (1100m) this Satruday at Rosehill and the Group lll event highlights a fab card at the Gardens. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:05) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1100m
3 Lifesaver (Bet Now: $2.50 BOOSTED PRICE) is an above average four year old for the Matty Dunn camp who resumed in a Highway at this track/distance a fortnight back and tried very hard on speed but couldn’t quite reel in the plonk horse Another Sin. Looks to have plenty of room for improvement and is the one to beat for mine.
7 Mossman Gorge (Bet Now: $4.50) is a smart three year old for the Matty Dale yard who deserve a crack at a Highway after resuming last week at kembla Grange and proving too nippy for his rivals over the 1000m. The worry I have is that the form out of that is already suspect with Cosmic Powers failing on Thursday. Still, he has the speed to overcome the draw, lead and take some running down. Last 150m will test.
8 Music Magic (Bet Now: $19.00) is a handy mare for the Michael Byers camp at Taree who has been racing well in recent times, including a couple of nice efforts at the midweeks. Last time out at Muswellbrook she got back in a leader dominated affair yet worked home with purpose late behind the in form Musical Query. Draws a soft gate and gets the claim for Adkins.
Race 2. (12:45) Pro It Handicap (74) 1500m
1 Awoke (Bet Now: $2.35) clearly on top for me. Chris Waller trained mare who bounced back to form with a tough and gritty first up win at Canterbury before coming here at this trip four weeks back and beating all bar Philosophy in a tight go. Looked sharp in a trial win last week and looks ready to go.
2 Chatuchak (Bet Now: $4.00) just missed out on the win two back at Randwick when a close up third to Argent D’Or before going to Kembla Grange where she was expected to win and justified the short quote with a dominant win. She is a Saturday horse for sure, especially in this kind of race. Confident she can measure up and go close.
5 Prada Miss (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented mare for the Stirlign Osland team who ran over 1400m in a similar race here a fortnight back and just missed in a blanket go when third to Elouera. Up to 1500m looks perfect for this girl and I think she has a bit of upside left compared to some who are bottomed out.
Race 3. (13:20) Asx Thompson Reuters Charity Foundation Handicap (80) 1100m
2 Improvement (Bet Now: $6.00) gets the nod for me here. Talented Swiss Ace mare that resumes for the Gary Portelli yard after a three run Autumn prep, all in Stakes grade, and each time she was far from disgraced in quality events, including a fourth to Derryn on Slipper Day. She could not have trialled any better last week at Warwick Farm and gets in really well at the weights after the claim.
3 Tango Rain (Bet Now: $3.10) is a smart type for Gerald Ryan who should be forgiven for his first up loss at Randwick three weeks back. Just got caught wide without cover from a sticky gate and that hard run just told late when gassed behind Sangiovese. Just needs better luck here to go close. The only worry is maybe second up syndrome.
5 Pumpkin Pie (Bet Now: $8.00) is a quality mare that resumes for the Danny Williams. She ran in the Country Championship Series in the Autumn, bolting up in the Goulbrun before running fifth in the Final. In between, she ran okay in two Stakes races, one of which behind Foxplay in the Pharlap. Trial at Goulburn was outstanding and she looks ready to go.
Race 4. (13:55) Pacific Boating Handicap (80) 2000m
4 Alward (Bet Now: $1.55) is a very interesting runner here. Chris Waller trained galloper who gave them an absolute galloping lesson last time out at Flemington under Michael Walker. Had a charmed run off the pace before being presented clear air, finding the best ground and letting down powerfully. Stable does have lofty ambitions for this horse so keen to see what he does here.
8 Meet And Greet (Bet Now: $11.00) is the very interesting runner here. John Meagher trained four year old who has put together a couple of sharp wins in Brisbane, both over the Doomben mile and both times given 12/10 steers by Brad Stewart, who comes down to ride and probably could have had a near full book at the Gold Coast, so that could be a lead. Always respect the stable when on the road.
9 Miss Dubois (Bet Now: $16.00) looks a key threat for the Matty Dunn yard. She ran over 1800m at Randwick against the mares three weeks back and loomed to win the race but couldn’t go with the hard fit Wahng Wah. Getting hard fit now herself, up to 2000m is ideal, she has upside and for mine she does tick plenty of boxes.
Race 5. (14:30) New Caledonia Travel Connection Premier's Cup 1900m
2 Classic Uniform (Bet Now: $4.00) looks the way to go for mine. Smart stayer for the Gary Moore stable who ran in the Prelude here a fortnight back where he had the charmed run behind the speed and chased hard all the way but clearly no match for Arbeitsam. That horse isn’t here, so he should lead comfortably and that is when he races best.
9 King Viv (Bet Now: $5.00) has been racing really well since coming back from a freshen up but he was a bit gun shy and didn’t quite know how to put them away at metro level- Tye Angland took care of that over 2000m at this track a fortnight ago with a strong ride late to get him over the line and get a well deserved win. That could do his confidence the world of good.
8 Hipparchus (Bet Now: $15.00) comes back to Sydney after kicking off his prep with a couple of runs in Melbourne, both times over unsuitable trips in events which had depth and the form out of them has stood up quite nicely. Gets out to an ideal trip now and his lone run here saw him run a narrow second at the 2000m.
Race 6. (15:05) Monaco Cup Ming Dynasty Quality 1400m
3 Hypnotist (Bet Now: $10.00) for me in a cracking edition of this race. This son of Snitzel has won two for two, the latest over the 1550m at Canterbury when toughing it out strongly under hard riding. Looked good in a trial recently and though I think 1400m is well short of his ideal trip, he does have class/quality about him and is in the right yard.
2 Assimilate (Bet Now: $3.70) is a smart son of Sebring that comes here off a little freshen up. Took care of a couple of nice types on debut at Kembla Grange before going to Randwick where he came with a well timed to run beat subsequent Up And Coming winner Dracarys. Trial behind quality mare I Am Serious was very good and he does have residual fitness.
1 Astoria (Bet Now: $11.00) is a smart colt that resumes for Godolphin and James Cummings. Could be heading down the Spring Champion/Derby path so I am sure whatever he does here, he will improve on, but his efforts in the Autumn were quite encouraging and I like what I have seen in two trials. The watch horse.
Race 7. (15:45) TPG Telecom San Domenico Stakes 1100m
I’ve taken a slice of the $11 all in for 9 Madeenaty (Bet Now: $7.50) so here’s hoping. Resumed down the Flemington straight three weeks ago and was ridden a treat by Brandon Stockdale, but her condition just gave way when gathered in by Crown Witness, who of course franked the form in the Quezette, and the third horse ran well at Pakenham. Should lead comfortably and does drop 3kg from last time.
Big, big watch on 5 Condor Heroes (Bet Now: $5.50). Very nice type for Gerald Ryan resuming off an aborted Brisbane campaign where he was highly fancied for the JJ Atkins. Been a bit of a barrier trial star, but it has been hard not to be impressed by what he has done at the trials, and appears ready to run a ripper fresh.
10 Jorda (Bet Now: $5.50) is a high quality filly that resumes for the Godolphin camp and James Cummings. She hasn’t raced since debuting in the Gimcrack last year where she was given a sweet ride by Macca and duly saluted. Was heading down the Blue Diamond path but stable pulled the pin. Loved her two trials and she appears ready to go first up.
Race 8. (16:25) Lindt Handicap (80) 1500m
3 Regal Monarch (Bet Now: $23.00) is the one that interests me here. Former import that is having his second prep for the Waller camp. He performed quite well in a couple of races but there was always signs of improvement for next prep, which is now. On the form guide, his trials haven’t been great. But for mine they have been quite good behind some quality types. Keen to see what he does here.
I’m willing to give 7 Francesco (Bet Now: $7.50) one more look here. Happy to overlook the run last Saturday because they absolutely crawled in front and that just isn’t his racing pattern. Looks to be good speed engaged here, and Avdulla is on, so he gets a few things going his way and I am convinced he is going well.
5 Coolcraft (Bet Now: $23.00) deserves another look in town for the Gwenda Markwell yard. The six year old has returned to his home track at Kembla Grange for a confidence boost and he has got it, winning two on the bounce, the latest over 1400m when given a 12/10 from Angland. Draws to stalk the speed and I think he will get the trip with the good nice gate.
Race 9. (17:05) Fig Handicap (95) 1200m
1 Bonny O’Reilly (Bet Now: $3.70) is a classy mare for Bjorn Baker who comes here with residual fitness after a campaign in Brisbane, which was going quite well with a couple of nice efforts at blacktype level but probably had enough by the time the Tatts Tiara. Two trials leading in, both in fast time, so she’s wound up for sure to run a beauty fresh.
3 Sir Bacchus (Bet Now: $5.00) is the interesting one for mine. Quality galloper for Chris Waller who couldn’t quite crack it for a win during the thick end of the Winter, running well but not greeting the judge. Freshened up, trialled well in early August, draws a nice gate and Bowman jumps on.
4 No Doubt (Bet Now: $8.50) looks the value in the race. Team Cummings trained galloper who was quite good I thought first up a fortnight back over 1100m here when running a close up fourth to Badajoz in a blanket finish. Think he wants further than 1200m, but at double figures, he’s well worth including.
