Sydney racing this Saturday heads to Randwick where it is McKell Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:25) Energy Air Plate 1400m
5 The Autumn Sun (Bet Now: $1.90) looks the safe way to go. Well bred colt who shot the lights out when winning on debut at Randwick on Anzac Day where he settled off the pace and was niggled at most of the way, but once he got clear air and was balanced up, but gee he let down like a really good horse to score. Tick over trial at Randwick last Tuesday was very good.
7 Mickey Blue Eyes (Bet Now: $8.50) was outstanding on debut in the Clarendon at Hawkesbury behind Graff before going to Warwick Farm last Wednesday where nothing really went right for him behind Pembroke Castle. Bigger track and a more genuine tempo should see him bounce back and prove hard to beat.
3 Orcein (Bet Now: $15.00) looks the watch horse. Chris Waller trains this colt, who was disappointing in the Clarendon prior to racing in a Warwick Farm maiden over 1200m where he got a mile back off them but worked home well behind Royal Celebration. Up to 1400m on the bigger track is a tick and he has hard race fitness.
Race 2. (12:00) Supporterhub Handicap (76) 1400m
I think you have to believe what you see in the shape of 2 Vontaine (Bet Now: $2.45) for Richard Freedman. Good winner on debut before stepping up to the Kembla mile against the older horses and she won like a star, her change up speed from the front was electric, winning seven lengths. I’d be shocked if she didn’t measure up.
1 Sweet Deal (Bet Now: $9.50) is a John Thompson trained filly who had contested some good fillies races during the Carnival but appreciated the drop in depth with a narrow win at Hawkesbury. She wanted to throw it away but Angland lifted her when required. She can run well here for sure and go close.
8 Touch Of Mink (Bet Now: $8.50) has always had a wrap on her for Matty Smith. She’s always contested good races and for the most part ran well but didn’t quite measure up. I reckon she can run a race at odds. Good maiden win at Kembla back in April before being freshened up and her recent trial behind Endless Drama was sharp to the eye.
Race 3. (12:35) McCarthy Homes Handicap (80) 1200m
2 Sasso Corbaro (Bet Now: $3.90) on top. Kris Lees trains this filly, who resumed in the Denise’s Joy during the Scone Carnival where she was ridden quite poorly and never got into the race. She showed last prep she’s much better than that and on her best form, she’d beat beating these. I’ll take the gamble she brings it.
4 Zonk (Bet Now: $3.35) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but perhaps with a soft lead she can fire. She looked to get that first up at Rosehill butbwas quite weak late when third to Epidemic, who has won again. If she can find more strength late, she’s in the game. Just wouldn’t want to take anything silly short.
1 Savatiano (Bet Now: $3.45) is a James Cummings trained filly who was heavily backed when resuming during the Scone Carnival and the punters got it right with a narrow but gritty win on speed after looking in trouble. Looks a nice type and should measure up here I think. Just doesn’t want to hit a flat spot like last time.
Race 4. (13:15) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1000m
11 Falerina (Bet Now: $3.60) will do me here. Brett Cavanough trains this filly, who produced a really impressive opening prep during the Summer, winning two of three and ran sizzling time in the wins. Resumes with no trials but when Cav sends a horse to town first up, no trials, with ability…usually has them ready to go.
1 She Knows (Bet Now: $2.70) is the obvious but the weight impost makes things difficult. Looked all over a winner in the Denise’s Joy last time but a hard 1100m at that level just saw her out. Back to 1000m a big tick. 62.5kg a big negative. Shinn will have to give her a very steady time of it on speed to see it out.
4 Go The Gantry (Bet Now: $13.00) is a yard watch. He’s had a few homes in recent times but is now with Gayna Williams at Mudgee. He has always showed good ability throughout his career but last prep he always seemed to carry condition. It’ll be interesting to see how he parades because if he’s fit, he’s in the game.
Race 5. (13:55) EML Handicap (85) 1600m
Looks a lovely race for 4 After All That (Bet Now: $3.30). Rod Northam trains this gelding, who was off the map in the last at Scone on Cup Day there and despite 60.5kg on his back, he absolutely bolted up under Blake Shinn. Is a winner at Randwick and the step up to the mile looks beneficial. Like him alot against this bunch.
6 Bastia (Bet Now: $3.90) is three weeks between runs for the Kris Lees camp since racing over 1500m at Rosehill where RT looked to give the gelding every chance but had no answers for the finale of Solo Mission. This horse can be a bit hit and miss at times but off that run, he should run well. Clear danger.
Danielle Campbell has 9 Central Witness (Bet Now: $23.00) in career best form at the moment. He ran in a 1500mHighway at Rosehill three weeks ago where I thought he had every chance but battled away pretty well behind Valree. Suspect at the mile but should do no work and he does have a turn of foot if need be.
Race 6. (14:35) Wilson Asset Management Handicap (79) 2000m
3 Live And Free (Bet Now: $2.30) should be putting this lot away. There was confident market support three weeks back over 1800m at Rosehill where he got a lovely run just off the pace and once Rachel King got the split, he showed an electric turn of foot and put them away quite dominantly I thought. Can only improve off that. Should win.
4 Merovee (Bet Now: $8.50) is a beautifully bred three year old for Chris Waller who resumed over 1800m at Rosehill and got a pass mark for mine given that was an ask fresh and he was beaten by a really good one in Live And Free. Up to 2000m second up looks ideal and rates highly. But he is getting close to D-Day.
14 Savvy Ken (Bet Now: $10.00) looks an improver. Clare Cunningham trains this three year old, who was good two back in the Frank Packer behind Higher Ground before dropping back to maiden grade at Canberra and despite not taking on much, he bolted. He can measure up here for sure and go close. Happy to be with him.
Race 7. (15:15) WJ McKell Cup 2400m
1 Ecuador (Bet Now: $4.15) just gets the nod for me. Waterbott train this tough nut, who is three weeks between runs since contesting the Lord Mayors Cup where he attempted to lead all the way and gave a good kick but just found Our Century too good. 2400m at Randwick looks as if it’ll suit him nicely. The one to beat.
There wasn’t a fluke about the win of 3 Our Century (Bet Now: $2.60) in the Lord Mayors Cup. He did all the work in the run, had every right to drop off but in the end, he was last man standing and proved too good. 2400m no issue and from all reports has trained on nicely since that outing. Has to be a threat.
2 Destiny’s Kiss (Bet Now: $8.50) will win one of these races during the Winter I’m sure of it. Racing quite well at the moment for Joe Pride and I reckon his run behind Our Century in the Lord Mayors Cup was full of merit. Tick over trial on Monday at Warwick Farm was encouraging enough. Would love a track with give in it.
Race 8. (15:50) The Man Shake Handicap 1100m
I think 8 I Thought So (Bet Now: $4.20) is a good gamble. He’s been a frustrating horse throughout his career because he has promised so much but hasn’t gone on with it. Reckon that might change now he’s with the Snowden camp because his two trials leading in have been outstanding, the latest coming last week here.
4 To Excess (Bet Now: $4.05) had trialled up enormous for Tracey Bartley prior to resuming in the Ortensia at Scone and under Josh Parr he absolutely bolted in, sprouting wings out wide and winning very impressively. I’d be shocked if he didn’t run well given he has natural improvement. Has to go in the numbers.
5 Dal Cielo (Bet Now: $9.50) isn’t one of mine but fresh in a fast run 1100m at Randwick might see improvement from him. He hasn’t raced since March 31 at Doomben where I thought he had every chance but could only manage third to Gracida, who has franked the form by winning the Chief De Beers. If the best Dal Cielo turns up, he goes close.
Race 9. (16:30) Anthony Diprose Memorial Handicap (77) 1400m
5 Schubert (Bet Now: $8.00) for me. He looked in a bit of trouble last time out at the Warwick Farm midweeks but once he balanced up, he knuckled down quite strongly and was very good. Extra trip and bigger track look only beneficial and I think he’s a good gamble each way here. Hopefully gets cover and ambushes.
4 Beacon (Bet Now: $4.75) is a handy three year old for Godolphin and James Cummings who comes through the Warwick Farm midweeks where I thought he was given every chance and looked the winner but Schubert was too good. Third up now, so he should just about be ready fitness wise. D-Day for mine.
17 Volpe (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy galloper for Danny Williams who comes through a Rosehill Highway where he looked the winner for a few moments but was overhauled late by Valree. Randwick 1400m looks ideal and he can sneak into the money with the right run in transit. Hopefully they go quick so he can have last look.
