The Moonee Valley night racing season kicks off this Friday evening where it is Moir Stakes Night. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Moir Stakes 🏆: View the Field for the Moir Stakes
Race 1. (17:15) Lloyd Williams Plate 1200m
Been waiting and waiting for 7 Endanger (Bet Now: $3.50 TOP ODDS) to return to the track and here he is. On paper, he didn’t look to beat much when an impressive debut winner at Cranbourne back in July, but he was strong to the line and through it in winning and there have been three winners to come from the race. Keen to see how he goes.
3 River Twain (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) looks to have his share of talent. Very good first up from the back in a Kilmore maiden before being strong to the line and through it when winning his maiden at Geelong. Harder here, but looks like he will land in a nice spot just off the speed and is hard to beat in a competitive race.
2 Saltpeter (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. Impressive win at Caulfield before being spelled. Resumed over 1100m at Bendigo where the market said he would need the run and that is how it panned out when down the track behind Tydeus. Better for the run and he’s got the runs on the board to bounce back here.
Race 2. (17:45) Msc Signs Lockdown Legend 1200m
Nick Ryan is doing a really good job with 5 Express Pass (Bet Now: $2.80 TOP ODDS). Was thrown in the deep end early on in his career, but the stable are putting him through his grades and placing him really nicely. Strong win at Caulfield a few weeks ago when back and finishing off strongly. Creeping up in the relative weights, but is in strong form.
Back to 1200m I find interesting with 3 My Pendant (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS). Danny O’Brien trained mare that resumed over 1400m at Caulfield when back near last in the run and while she was never a winning threat, she did make up late ground. She’ll be hoping for a genuine tempo and do like Olly jumping back aboard. Hard to beat.
If the rain forecast does hit, I think a knockout chance here is 2 Inn Keeper (Bet Now: $34.00 TOP ODDS) for Symon Wilde. Recent form has been so so, but he has contested some strong races and has been on firm ground, something he doesn’t like compared to when he can get his toe in, so if the rain comes, could back him to place.
Race 3. (18:15) Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge 955m
4 Alfa Oro (Bet Now: $2.15 TOP ODDS) is a Matt Laurie trained son of Bachelor Duke that has been given a little freshen up, having not raced since June 27 at Caulfield when absolutely bolting up to make it four on the bounce. Been kept on ice with the Spring in mind and thought his recent jumpout was very good, suggesting he’s ready to go fresh.
Can sustained speed come to the fore via 6 Sisstar? (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) Talented mare for the McEvoy camp that is first up. She hasn’t raced since March 28 during the Adelaide Carnival when close up in defeat behind a talented mare, Equal Love. Has been ridden conservatively in both trials, but suspect they’ll let her roll against these and try to run them off their legs.
2 Mister Mogul (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) is a short course specialist for Henry Dwyer who has a good record at the Valley. Took a sit last time out at Sandown, against his usual pattern given he likes to be on speed, but he reacted to the more conservative steer and bolted in. Proven 955m performer and isn’t badly in at the weights.
Race 4. (18:45) Stutt Stakes 1600m
The Caulfield Guineas picture will take some shape after this race. I think there is good upside to come with the Gordon Richards trained 7 Crown Mint (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS). Enormous in defeat fresh at Morphettville behind So You Can before closing off hard at Flemington when fourth to Crosshaven. Looks suited up to the mile and has change up speed whereas some of these do not.
4 Cherry Tortoni (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) looks to be ticking along nicely towards the Derby. Patrick Payne trained three year old that kicked off his prep in the Exford at Flemington and was good late without threatening when third to Crosshaven. He’ll love the rise to the mile and if this becomes a sit/sprint, he does have a turn of foot.
3 Lunar Fox (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) has had a couple of runs now for Paul Preusker and looks to be getting somewhere near his best. Ran over 1500m at the Valley and was luckless, getting into a bumping battle with Cumberbatch, and that sealed the fate of both runners. Think he’s going well and up to the mile, he appeals.
Race 5. (19:15) Scarborough Stakes 1200m
A key threat for me here is 1 Swats That (Bet Now: $3.20) for the Corstens camp. Resumed in that race mentioned above and loomed to win but condition just gave out and the winner September Run could easily measure up in a Coolmore. Tricky gate to overcome but think she comes through the right form. Really hard to beat.
3 Dirty Thoughts (Bet Now: $3.10) has been up a little while for the Ellerton/Zahra team but she’s been very good right throughout the prep. Comes through the Atlantic Jewel when on speed and fighting on strongly when third to Night Raid. Is a winner on a wet Valley track so if the rain does hit, she’s hard to beat.
6 Mileva (Bet Now: $9.50) is a fascinating runner. 2/2 in SA and has looked pretty sharp on each occasion. When she won during the Summer, she was touted as a possible Blue Diamond contender, but was spelled for the Adelaide Carnival, but had a niggling issue and was spelled again. Resumed a few weeks ago when leading, copping pressure, but drew clear late and was impressive. Keen to see how she goes.
Race 6. (19:45) Jra Cup 2040m
The safe option is 5 Al Galayel (Bet Now: $3.10), who is just about in career best form and tends to save his best for the Valley. In saying that, he was impressive when winning at Caulfield last time out, beating home a quality field, including Naturalism winner Orderofthegarter. Back to the Valley, fresh legs, really hard to beat.
1 Mirage Dancer (Bet Now: $7.50) is a couple of lengths off being a top tier stayer, so think this is really good placement by the stable. Dodged the Naturalism last Saturday to be saved for this to get ready for the Caulfield Cup. Resumed in the Heatherlie and was far from disgraced in defeat behind In Good Health. Suited up in trip and is a knockout chance.
8 Mantastic (Bet Now: $8.00) has an ordinary racing pattern, but his closing splits are just super and he has to be included. No chance last time out at Flemington but loved the way he closed off late in the race behind The Chosen One. Prefer him on dry ground, but do like the booking of Craig Williams.
Race 7. (20:15) Moir Stakes 1000m
He’s not really a noted first up performer, but with The Everest on the horizon, I think 1 Trekking (Bet Now: $10.00) can make a real statement with a win here. Hasn’t raced since beating home Gytrash and winning the Goodwood. Trekking is $26+ for the Everest whereas Gytrash is $6-$7…crazy. Trial was very good and with a heap of pressure in front, can see him finishing over the top. Just doesn’t want the track too wet.
6 Bella Vella (Bet Now: $7.00) has a real liking for the Valley and is a Group l winner so she commands respect. Resumed in the McEwen and although she only just wore down Ashlor, the win had merit because that guy is a real tough nut and she was first up with improvement to come. Looks spot on for this and proven on wet ground.
3 Jungle Edge (Bet Now: $18.00) would love this track to be in the heavy range, like it was supposed to be a month or so back when the meeting here was washed out. Impressive winner of the John Monash when finding heavy ground, but the track was much firmer in the Bletchingly and finished down the track behind Viridine, who won the Regal Roller to frank the form. If the forecast for rain is right and it hits hard, he comes right into play.
Race 8. (20:45) Stocks Stakes 1600m
Back to Mares grade I do like for the WA mare 3 Perfect Jewel (Bet Now: $2.60). Smashed the clock when winning the Cockram first up before going to the Makybe Diva where I was keen on her chances, but she didn’t do a great deal and have to mark her down as disappointing. Back to against the Mares, she’s really likeable.
10 My Gold Bracelet (Bet Now: $16.00) is worth another chance. Price/Kent trained mare that comes through the Let’s Elope where not much went her way and thought she should have finished a touch closer behind Pretty Brazen. The first up run suggested she could measure up in a race like this, so she deserves another chance.
4 Spanish Reef (Bet Now: $21.00) has a really good record at the Valley, especially when racing in Mares races. Resumed for the Keys team in the Let’s Elope and in a slowly run race, I thought she worked home pretty well in defeat behind Pretty Brazen, who went enormous in the Sir Rupert Clarke, so think that form reads very well for this and is a knockout chance.
