A strong eight race card has been set down for Flemington on Anzac Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:00) Flt Lt Peter Armytage (Bm78) 1100m
2 Snapped (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a touch of quality and should be better for the last start effort, which came at Flemington down the straight where she took a little while to wind into her but was good to the line when a close up third to Veranskova. That was her first run since Feb 4 so you’d think with last start under the belt, she commands respect.
Fresh legs and back to the straight course are two big ticks for 7 Senegalia (Bet Now: $SP.00). Maher/Eustace trained mare that is four weeks between runs since racing down the straight at Flemington against the Mares where she raced over 1100m and tried hard but just couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up fifth to Veranskova. 1000m horse IMO and back to that trip here, and a bending track, she is good enough to take this out.
8 All About Eve (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate getting back to benchmark grade. She resumed at Stakes level in the Manihi at Morphettville and just found the class and race tempo a bit much, running last behind a smart filly, Little Miss Kubi. This looks more her level and had jumped out well prior to that, so I wouldn’t totally dismiss her.
Race 2. (13:35) Auckland T'bred Racing (Bm78) 1100m
1 Do Ya Punk (Bet Now: $SP.00) only has to handle the straight course to be taking this out IMO. He resumed over this trip at Bendigo and was one of the better runs of the meeting, rocketing to the line late from off the speed when third to El Salto. Good upside to come, in well after the claim, drawn out…if he handles the straight course, I think he wins and wins well.
10 Treporti (Bet Now: $SP.00) is heading in the right direction for Danny O’Brien and is one of the hardest to beat. Several weeks between runs since winning at Bendigo over 1300m, driving hard late from off the speed to nail Ice Pick Nick on the peg. I reckon the end of 1300m sees him so back to 1100m I do like for him and if he’s within range on the turn, he’ll be hard to hold out.
6 Big Day Out (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a winner down the straight previously so he’s one to include for wider multiples. He hasn’t raced since late March when a closing fourth in the Flat Knacker over 900m at Albury behind a proven city horse, Sparring. He gets in really well after the claim and drawn out, likely being near Do Ya Punk, he’ll be following the right horses.
Race 3. (14:10) Anzac Day Stakes 1400m
9 Alectrona (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a filly I have time for and want to give her another chance. Was keen on her when she debuted over this trip at Sandown and she was trucking in the run outside the speed but when Bates asked her to go, the wheels were spinning on the ground and ground to the line when third. Love her back on firmer footing, lands in a good spot from the gate and off her jumpout work prior to the debut, she’s good enough to beat these.
7 Legacies (Bet Now: $SP.00) commands respect for Peter Moody. Debuted last Friday over 1200m at Cranbourne and while I doubt she beat much, you had to like the ticker she showed to fend them off and win. She was there to be beaten but she found under pressure to fend them off and get the job done in pretty good style. Bred to eat up further, in the right camp, hard to beat.
10 Stellar Mofeed (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1400m. She was big odds when debuting over 1100m at Bendigo and while she was never a winning factor, I didn’t mind the way she found the line late when third to a sharp debut winner, Long Lost Friend. Not sure she is good enough to take this out, but can certainly fill a first four spot.
Race 4. (14:45) Wgcdr Ian Bayles Dfc Hcp 1200m
1 Airman (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a three year old who has a decent engine under the hood. Team Hawkes trained gelding that comes here off the back of a win at the midweeks on the Kenso track where he produced outstanding late splits to win well in a race which had depth to it. Has done little wrong in a four start career and has always teased to be a good horse at this level. He can measure up for sure.
2 Midtown Boss (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a son of Street Boss for Team Kav that resumes. He hasn’t raced since December 10 here over 1400m when back off the speed and was very good late from the back, just missing out on the win when second to Russian Roni. Seems to have jumped out well leading to my eye and although 1200m is on the short side for him, he’ll be strong at the end.
4 Zou Sensation (Bet Now: $SP.00) gets a host of gear chances to improve him enough to measure up. Market said it would be a prep run when resuming at Geelong on Good Friday and that is how it eventuated, getting no room to move when wanting to get going, eventually finishing down the track behind Karalee Rocks. His best is dangerous. Just want to see him do it.
Race 5. (15:20) William Newton Vc Hcp 2000m
Good luck beating 1 White Marlin (Bet Now: $2.50 To Run Top 2 SPECIAL). He is fast becoming one of the more popular racehorses in Australia. He’s a grey, he does the work from the front, he fights and he runs fast for a stayer, as seen when a dominant winner of the Easter Cup a couple of weeks ago at Sandown. He was there to be run down but he kept finding and on the line was drawing clear. Upside, lands on speed, class, sustained speed…he just wins and $1.90 early odds looks an absolute gift.
9 Deepstrike (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a much better horse when getting his toe in but he’s found winning form. That came last start in the Stawell Cup where he found a wet track and in a slog, he finished best under hard riding from Yendall to score. He was only second up there, so he’s got room for improvement and outside the favourite, this is a nothing race.
3 Point Nepean (Bet Now: $SP.00) is such a fascinating runner. He now finds himself with Team Hayes and we know how good this stable is at improving a tried horse, the best example being Mr Brightside. His last run came in the Spring in the Herbert Power when down the track behind Saracen Knight. He can sprint well fresh, his trial work has been encouraging…his best can see him finish top three, but just watch the market.
Race 6. (15:55) Vrc St Leger 2800m
12 Winning Bid (Bet Now: $SP.00) seems a very one paced type so I think with that in mind, 2800m here looks ideal. She has had a really good grounding for this, with several 2000m runs and a 2200m run in there. Latest run was over 2000m at Ballarat where I thought Olly gave her a peach but she was very one paced when asked and just whacked to the line when second to Tewkesbury. Olly sticks and overall, this is one of the worst editions of the St Leger I’ve seen, so despite being a maiden, she’s hard to beat.
1 Midnight Glow (Bet Now: $SP.00) has the A1 form to give this a shake. Far from disgraced two back in the St Leger Trial at Bendigo before going to 2400m at Sandown in the Galilee Final where he drove hard late from off the speed, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Bengal Boy. Draws to do no work in the run and with the leading form, he commands respect.
3 Highland Hill (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the one I am very wary of. They rode him very warm in the Galilee Final last time and tried his guts out but just couldn’t quite see it through when fourth to Bengal Boy. The prior efforts suggested that he is a much better horse when ridden with a sit and with the patient hands of B Shinn aboard, he has to be given a serious chance.
Race 7. (16:30) The Les Carlyon Hcp 1700m
I think there is real intent here with 12 Flash Feeling (Bet Now: $SP.00) for John Sadler. She resumed last Saturday at Sandown where he had a suck run nearer the inside and was building the revs nicely until getting badly held up late when having plenty up the sleeve. Big jockey upgrade, firmer footing, back to a track he loves, and this isn’t a strong open handicap. Happy to be with him.
2 Pinstriped (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found winning form and he can certainly go on with it now. He ran last Saturday at Sandown in the VOBIS Gold Mile where it was D-Day for him and he passed with flying colours, giving them an absolute spanking by a space and did it with plenty in hand. He has a tricky draw to overcome, but is the class of the field and loves Flemington.
15 Independent Road (Bet Now: $SP.00) doesn’t have the best of winning strike rates but is consistent and should be around the mark. His last couple of runs have come at Flemington, the latest being a few weeks back and he tried his guts out but just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Sparkle. Has had the break between runs and back in trip is okay. Knockout hope.
Race 8. (17:05) Colonel Sybil Irving Mbe-Bm78 1400m
17 Altivo (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very progressive animal for Team Hawkes and appears quite clearly the one to beat. He resumed at the midweeks at Sandown over 1400m where he gave them a start and a beating, with McNeil giving him a peach from off the speed and really, it was just a matter of pushing the button and once he did, he exploded. Good upside, heading in the right direction, he’s clearly the pony to bet on.
11 British Columbia (Bet Now: $SP.00) is hard to beat against these for the very much in form Grahame Begg stable. He ran over 1400m several weeks ago at The Valley where he was near the speed throughout and battled away strongly, but was nabbed near the peg by outsider Yulong Patrol. Prior efforts were strong and with two solid mile runs under the belt, it should hold him in good stead.
Back to 1400m I do like for 15 Tap N Run (Bet Now: $SP.00). He comes back to 1400m after racing in the Albury Mile during their Carnival where I thought he was given every chance and was there to win but just failed to run the trip out behind tough nut Zakeriz. 1400m specialist and with the 1600m run under the belt, he should be strong at the end and is hard to beat.
