One of the premier race days not just in Sydney but indeed Australia is Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill and the bumper card of racing comes around this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out two metrs for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:15) Chandon S Darby Munro Stakes 1200m
6 Isaurian (Bet Now: $4.20) is the unknown here because we just don’t know how good he is. Unbeaten in two runs for the Godolphin stable and his resumption at the Warwick Farm midweeks was outstanding, running some slick final splits to savage the line and win. The track that day was a genuine soft, so give in the ground here no disadvantage.
3 I Am Excited (Bet Now: $3.45) faces her toughest test but it’s hard to knock a filly who is two for two this time in and has been brilliant in doing so, clocking fast splits from the back and winning impressively. Hasn’t raced on a wet track but has trialled well on it previously. On form, she has to be respected.
2 One More Honey (Bet Now: $23.00) had trialled up really well prior to resuming in the Fireball where I thought she was quite good, working home well nearer the inside behind I Am Excited. John Thompson looks to have trained her to have speed in the legs whereas last prep she was being aimed at the Oaks. Definite threat.
Race 2. (12:55) Mounties 50th Birthday Epona Stakes 1900m
7 Nettoyer (Bet Now: $3.25) looks a good thing to my eye. Wendy Roche has this mare absolutely flying at the moment and what she has been looking for is ground and a wet track. Both boxes ticked. Should have won the Aspiration last time out but was wide no cover for the trip when beaten a neck by Karavali. Confident she turns the tables and wins.
3 Karavali (Bet Now: $8.00) looks the threat. The ride from Collett won the race for the mare in the Aspiration, saving ground nearer the inside before getting the split and dashing at the right time to score. Wet track and 1900m is certainly no disadvantage for her, plus she has upside, so she’s very likeable herself.
11 Domed (Bet Now: $15.00) is the pick of the rest for mine. John Thompson trains this daughter of Duke Of Marmalade, who looked in a bit of trouble last time out over 1900m at Canterbury but she dug in deep under Shinn to grab the win. Wet track certainly no issue for her and a hard 1900m won’t be an issue.
Race 3. (13:30) Irresistible Pools N E Manion Cup 2400m
The wet track certainly won’t harm the chances of 4 Master Of Arts (Bet Now: $6.50), who ran pretty well in defeat last time out in the Lord Reims at Morphettville when second to Etah James, but that mare just walked them in front and sprinted. Has since trialled well over the sticks at the Bool to sharpen him and he is a swimmer.
2 Lord Fandango (Bet Now: $5.75) could be a big improver here back to a handicap. He has been at WFA his past two and has run well but hasn’t quite measured up well enough to be a winning threat. He was okay in the Australian Cup but never really looked likely. Good record at 2400m and handles a track with give in it.
Not sure about him on a wet track, but 7 Admiral Jello (Bet Now: $11.00) is flying for Kris Lees. Rocketed home last time out in the Canberra Cup bust just missed out on picking up the in from Almost Court. Has placed three from four on soft, not seen on heavy but has trialled just fair on heavy. Up to 2400m suits and has upside.
Race 4. (14:05) Ranvet Stakes 2000m
8 Single Gaze (Bet Now: $4.80) on an each way basis. This mare hasn’t won for just under 12 months but I reckon her last six months have been unbelievable against the best of the best outside Winx. Three runs back this time in have been super, the latest coming in the Australian Cup where the bias probably beat her in the end yet she still produced some of the fastest splits of the race in the quicksand behind Harlem. 2000m, back home in Sydney, wet track, hard fit, in form, she’ll do me.
1 Gailo Chop (Bet Now: $2.00) does go in, but for mine, he’s just far too short in betting in a race which doesn’t shape up well for him. He was outstanding in defeat last time out in a brutally run Australian Cup, but bear in mind he had the aid of the bias for those on speed and he didn’t attack the line. Wet track record is great, but he hasn’t beaten much at this level on wet ground. There are negatives, but he has the form on the board.
2 Classic Uniform (Bet Now: $14.00) is absolutely flying this prep for the Gary Moore stable. Far from disgraced first up in the Apollo before going to the Chipping Norton where he was outstanding in defeat I thought behind Winx in the Chipping Norton. 2000m on a wet track, third up, on speed, I think he’ll run a bold race.
Race 5. (14:45) The Agency George Ryder Stakes 1500m
Self explanatory here with 4 Winx (Bet Now: $1.20 FAT ODDS). It’s hard to say she has come back better than ever, but you can definitely say she isn’t going worse. The Chipping Norton win was outstanding. Yes, didn’t appear to beat much, but the way she did it and how easily she glided over the Randwick turf was amazing to watch. She is a several lengths better horse with give in the track. We will witness something very special once again.
Glad that Godolphin and James Cummings aren’t dodging the great mare with 6 Kementari (Bet Now: $7.50).We want to see new kids on the block and how they can compare with her, and as of right now, outside Humidor and to a lesser extent Happy Clapper, he’s potentially the best challenger she’ll face this Autumm at this trip. Randwick Guineas win was outstanding, dominant and did it comfortably. Wet track no issue.
1 Happy Clapper (Bet Now: $13.00) is tuning up for the Doncaster and this run should top him off perfectly. His Canterbury Stakes win was simply unbelievable. The punters smashed him late and they were rewarded, but what impressed me was his last 50m and through the line. He charged, a horse already wanting further. Better on top of the ground, but should run well again.
Race 6. (15:25) Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas 2000m
1 Ace High (Bet Now: $6.00) clearly on top for me. The query for some is his wet track record, but majority of those runs were as a two year old. He’s a different horse this time around. A better horse. Loved the way he stuck on in the Randwick Guineas a fortnight back when close up behind Kementari Guineas/Derby has been the goal since the Victoria Derby last year and he looks ready to rock and roll.
8 D’Argento (Bet Now: $4.40) was the clear forgive horse from the Randwick Guineas. He was given too much to do in the run sitting wide no cover out the back for the most part, but despite that hard run, he worked home with purpose late to run fifth, beaten three lengths. He’s racing like a 2000m horse and is 1/1 on wet ground.
Best roughie in the race for me is clearly 7 Capital Gain (Bet Now: $51.00). Produced good late splits first up in the Hobartville before copping interference in the Randwick Guineas and was never really in the hunt. He is a swimmer, as we saw in the Brisbane Winter, and he’s been set for this and the Derby. I think he’ll run a mighty race at huge odds.
Race 7. (16:10) Longines Golden Slipper 1200m
Firmly in the corner of 10 Sunlight (Bet Now: $5.00) for the Slipper. She is just a bomb proof filly for Tony McEvoy. She can handle wet or dry, she can sit off the pace, she can lead, she’s strong at the end of a hard 1200m, and she is two for two at Rosehill, and yes, her Magic Night win last Saturday was slower than that of Written By, but condition wise, Sunlight looked bigger than what she did in the Silver Slipper. Can’t go past her.
Very wary of 5 Performer (Bet Now: $8.00). Wasn’t going to win the Todman but would have gone close to placing had he not done a Benji Marshall sidestep which dislodged Hugh Bowman. Trialled last Thursday at Randwick on a bog and he went like Black Caviar on face value. I say on face value because yes, he was trucking under McEvoy, but he was up against maiden/unraced types. Blinkers on could well be the making of a star. Time will tell.
She is forgotten by most, but I am seriously respecting 15 Seabrook (Bet Now: $9.00). I thought her Sweet Embrace win was outstanding. Few weeks between runs, first run racing clockwise, sat three/four wide throughout yet still finished best and on the line she pricked the ears, a good sign that she something left. Proven at a hard 1200m, has upside, and a wet track certainly no issue for her. Her and Sunlight are the two for me.
Race 8. (16:50) The Galaxy 1100m
Thought 2 Jungle Edge (Bet Now: $4.60) was one of the better bets on the card. His run first up in the Challenge behind Redzel was unbelievable really. Mick Bell had done very little with the horse prior to resuming in that race at Randwick, where the track was rock hard, something the horse hates, yet he chased a hot speed and still fought on strongly to run second. Wet track, 1100m, on speed, tough…he’ll do me.
3 In Her Time (Bet Now: $3.95) is the best horse in the race, I think. But on a wet track, I’m not so sure. Three run Spring prep was outstanding, winning her first two before a desperately unlucky second to Hey Doc in the Manikato. Could not have trialled any better at Newcastle last Wednesday. Just needs to tick the wet track box.
The knockout chance is clearly 11 Derryn (Bet Now: $21.00). He won the Darby Munro on this day last year on a bog and that is when he races best so I’m definitely including him. Resumed in the Canterbury Stakes and the track was too firm for him, plus WFA isn’t his go. Much better suited at the handicaps and draws a lovely gate.
Race 9. (17:30) TAB Birthday Card Stakes 1200m
3 Sugar Bella (Bet Now: $3.45) looks a good thing. Her win first up in the Wenona Girl a fortnight back was simply unbelievable. Had no right to win given she was first up, was back last in a slowly run affair, yet still rattled off a sub 33 split to nab them on the line. Remaining at 1200m a query, but they will go hard, so she’ll get her chance to launch.
2 Faraway Town (Bet Now: $15.00) was a non winner but now she is a winning machine. Brilliant win first up at Randwick over 1200m before going to the Triscay a few weeks back where she was wide no cover throughout but she found plenty in the straight and in the end was strongest on the line. Confident she can measure up against this lot.
9 Hetty Heights (Bet Now: $26.00) is a quality mare that resumes for the Kim Waugh stable, who is low flying at the moment. This girl ran well during the Winter/Spring but couldn’t quite crack it for a win. Trials leading in have been very good, she flies first up, she likes Rosehill and handles a track with give in it.
