The final major of the season, the Tatts Tiara (1350m), highlights a fab card of racing at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out 3.5 metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:34) Crystal Slipper 1200m
If 6 Veranes (Bet Now: $8.50) is anywhere near right, convinced she’s the best horse in the race. Had three runs to kick off her career in the Summer in order to qualify for the Millions. Was close up behind Outback Barbie and Meryl but didn’t get in and was tipped out. Been given a good break and her Gold Coast trial last week was more than encouraging.
2 Bare Naked Lady (Bet Now: $3.60) looks a really nice filly for Tracey Bartley. Good on debut at Muswellbrook before going to the Inglis Challenge, which had no depth at all and she brained them. Been freshened up and looked sharp in a recent Wyong trial win. Has the runs on the board and should take some beating.
4 Adoradiva (Bet Now: $13.00) has always had a bit of a boom on her from day one and that has been reflected in the market flucs for each of her four career outings where she has been backed with confidence, the latest coming at the Gold Coast where she led all the way aided by a beaut steer from Boris Thornton. That was 1400m, so back to 1200m looks ideal.
Race 2. (12:09) Winning Edge Presentation Stakes 1350m
Only bad luck will see 4 Granny Red Shoes (Bet Now: $1.55) get beat here. She was a notable drifter in betting in the Oxlade three weeks back at the Sunny Coast, with bookies keen to take her on. They were left with egg on their face as she absolutely bolted in. 1350m no issue, has the form on the board…surely just wins.
6 Light Up The Boom (Bet Now: $6.50) is a promising daughter of So You Think for Tony Gollan who was off the map when debuting at the Gold Coast midweeks a couple of Wednesdays back and the punters got it right as she came with a well timed run from off the pace to win impressively. Good effort to win on debut at the six furlongs so 1350m no issue here based on breeding.
5 Victory Toast (Bet Now: $9.00) is on the quick back up for the Ben Currie stable after winning impressively last Wednesday on her home track at Toowoomba. Visually, slick, but if you’re going on times, it was ordinary. She does have the hard 1300m run under the belt so that should give her a good grounding for this 1350m assignment.
Race 3. (12:44) Battle Of The Bush (0MW) 1200m
Next to no replays for this race so nearly impossible to sort out with confidence. Landed with 6 Man Around Town (Bet Now: $5.50), a ten time winner for Trevor Rowe. He ran in the Atherton Qualfier of this series three weeks ago and he got the job done. Can’t say how he did it but I can say on times, of the three 1200m races that afternoon, he ran just over three lengths quicker than the other two. Four of his wins have come at TAB meetings and 1200m record is great.
12 Timetus (Bet Now: $9.50) does look the obvious. Craig Smith trains this galloper and whenever the stable brings them to town or a TAB meet, they should always be respected. Won the Charleville Qualifier a few weeks ago before racing at Rockhampton where he was on speed and tired late behind Barachiel, a very good horse from Rockhampton. That Charleville win, the time was okay, the form hasn’t been great, but that Rocky race and the form has already been franked by Uthred.
10 Gingersnap (Bet Now: $13.00) is a John Manzelmann trained mare who won the Bowen qualifier, beating three rivals, including Mason’s Chance, who has won since. She then went to Mackay last week where she had specking at odds and tried hard when on speed but just tired late when fifth to the above average Option. I think she might be the value.
Race 4. (13:19) Matt, Stav & Abby Plate (Class 6) 1350m
4 No Annamossity (Bet Now: $3.00) is the horse on the up so I’ll go his way but with not much confidence. He is five weeks between runs since scoring a rather impressive win at this track/distance. Visually, it was impressive, but in hindsight, running away from Cadogan isn’t exactly something you want to show off on your CV. Still, he was only second up and he generally gets better as the prep gets deeper.
13 Inspired Estelle (Bet Now: $7.00) could be the improver. Toby Edmonds trains this mare, who resumed in the Coughlan at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago where she got back to near last in the run and couldn’t really come on at all behind Epidemic. Much better horse at Doomben and though a risk at 1350m, she has the class/quality.
5 Tailevent (Bet Now: $10.00) is going well for Bruce Hill but can’t crack it for a win. He is five weeks between runs after racing over the 1200m here where he got off the speed and chased hard all the way when second to Miss Iano. He’s a good horse on the fresh side and though I’d prefer him at 1200m, with a cold ride, I think he’ll get the trip.
Race 5. (13:58) Singapore Airlines Plate 1350m
8 Sacred Rebel (Bet Now: $14.00) for me. Tony Pike trains this quality looking gelding, who made his Australian debut on a bog at the Sunny Coast over 1200m where he chased a hot speed and I thought he did a really good job to get the win because the leader was hard fit and well backed. 1350m looks ideal and should have natural upside.
1 The Bostonian (Bet Now: $3.10) is a son of Jimmy Choux for Tony Pike who has had an interrupted prep in Brisbane but finally kicked it off a tick under two weeks back at the Sunny Coast in the Daybreak Lover where he was on speed and fought really hard to score a narrow but impressive win. Up to the 1350m no issue and has the form on the board.
3 Trommelschlagen (Bet Now: $7.00) is the big watch for mine. Rob Heathcoate trains this three year old, who is first up here. He comes here off the back of a 13 length trial romp at Eagle Farm last Monday where he led and when asked for more of an effort, he found another couple of gears and won impressively. Looks ready to go first up.
Race 6. (14:38) Tatts Cup 2200m
Very interesting that 2 Tradesman (Bet Now: $1.95) has accepted and is likely to back up given they did say the Caloundra Cup would be next start. I’m assuming he has pulled up well from last Saturday, and he would have had to, given he was wide no cover in the Ipswich Cup yet kept finding and got the win in the last stride. Normal luck and I think he wins.
Can you trust 4 Anton En Avant? (Bet Now: $8.50) I think the answer is yes. Yep, he won the Chairmans at $151 and we all thought, nah, no way he can produce a run like that again. But he did it next time out in the Brisbane Cup when second to Sedanzer. He has the form on the board and isn’t badly treated at the weights. Happy to include him.
9 San Telmo (Bet Now: $51.00) might be one to include in exotics. He is just under a fortnight between runs since racing over the 1800m at the Sunny Coast where he got back in an on pace dominated affair and just couldn’t run on well enough to win but he did close off to run third to Terra Sancta. Up to 2200m with serious weight relief, I can make a case for him to place.
Race 7. (15:18) GH Mumm 1615m
I am hoping he is double figure odds, because if so, I think 3 Grande Rosso (Bet Now: $6.00) is one of the better gambles on the card. Two runs for the Snowden camp, the latest coming three weeks back at Rosehill when close up with the big weight behind Sir Bacchus. Third up at the mile, with weight relief, gee I think he’ll run well.
2 Ulmann (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Darren Weir trained son of Sebring who was given an absolute peach of a steer from Lane in the Wayne Wilson a fortnight ago and the ride really deserved the win but he just couldn’t hold out the finale of Hopfgarten. Little while between wins, but I think another one is on the horizon.
5 Cantbuybetter (Bet Now: $26.00) looks the big improver for Ben Currie. Had several jump outs prior to resuming in the BRC Sprint, where they tried to get him into the Stradbroke but nothing went right behind I’m A Rippa before going to the Wayne Wilson where he struggled on the heavy track behind Hopfgarten. Much better on top of the ground and gets really good weight relief.
Race 8. (15:58) Tatts Tiara 1350m
I think this race is all about 3 Daysee Doom (Bet Now: $19.00 FAT ODDS) and how she is going. If she’s right, I think she wins. She’s the best filly/mare in this race by a mile and her form just reads far superior to this lot. Had a four run Autumn prep, highlighted by a courageous and gutsy win in the Coolmore. Trialled up very nicely last week, she’s tough, reliable and a bomb when produced fresh.
15 Champagne Cuddles…(Bet Now: $7.00 FAT ODDS) I don’t know what to do with her. On form, current form, she’s the one to beat. But on the flip side, her last two runs have been absolute gut busters, the latest in the Stradbroke when third to Santa Ana Lane. Back to her own sex…just all depends how much petrol is left in the tank.
14 Siren’s Fury (Bet Now: $21.00 FAT ODDS) continues to be underestimated and I don’t know why. Two runs/wins to start the prep were outstanding before going to the Dane Ripper where she did a remarkable job from the back to run fourth to Invincibella. Should be able to sit much closer in the run from the draw…she’s crazy odds.
Race 9. (16:33) WJ Healy Stakes 1200m
Going to take a punt on 13 Hieroglyphics (Bet Now: $19.00) a former Team Cummings galloper having her first run for Stuart Kendrick. This girl does have some pretty good form next to her name when racing in Sydney and she is a bomb when produced fresh. No trials leading in, but stable can get them right first up. I’ll take a chance.
Thought it was a strange decision to run 9 Tumbler (Bet Now: $6.50) in the Gai Waterhouse last Saturday. 1350m isn’t her distance, Ipswich isn’t her track, poorly weighted, wide gate…everything was against her, but she didn’t do a bad job from the back behind Magic Alibi. Great record here, drops big time in weight, soft draw…she’s very likeable.
16 Gibraltar Girl (Bet Now: $15.00) is a mark Newnham trained mare who is certainly capable if she brought her best form. She resumed in the Hinkler a fortnight back and stuck on okay without really threatening behind Gibraltar Girl. Two time second up winner and I think she is a definite sharp improver on top of the ground.
