Flemington will host the main Victorian race card on Saturday with nine races set down. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
The Straight Six π: View the Field for The Straight Six
Race 1. (11:40) Rogan Josh Stayers Trophy-bm84 2500m
Siding with 10 Nashville Sound (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS). Just missed out on the win during the Warrnambool Carnival two back before coming back to 2000m in the Casterton Cup on Sunday and on face value was disappointing behind Under Oath but he was coming back in trip and that track was firm. To me, he seems a horse best suited with give in the track, which he gets here, and I think 2500m is a big tick.
6 Starcaster (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is worth another chance here I feel. Loved the way he attacked the line to win two back over 1700m at Geelong before going to 2100m at Sandown where he was back near last, and the way the track was playing, he was absolutely no chance, and actually didn’t do a bad job getting as close as he did. Up to 2500m, firmer footing, gets another chance.
3 Good Idea (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a Phillip Stokes trained five year old that should prove hard to beat here. He ran over 2600m here four weeks ago when sitting back off a good speed and despite wanting to lay in under pressure, he found the line strongly to run third to Haky. Scratched from the Andrew Ramsden to be saved for this.
Race 2. (12:15) Tom Melbourne Trophy 1400m
I like the look of 5 Immortal Love (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) for the Price/Kent team. Was confidently supported in betting when on debut at Echuca and under a lovely steer from Froggy, the son of Snitzel got the dream sit behind the leader before angling clear and he was very strong to the line in winning. Don’t see 1400m being an issue and stable is in form.
1 Khoekhoe (Bet Now: $2.25 TOP ODDS) has the runs on the board for Matt Cumani having taken out The Showdown at Caulfield when finishing right over the top for an impressive win, his second on the bounce. He’s five weeks between runs, so fitness levels are unknown, but he’s got the form on the board to be rated highly here.
2 Rock The Ring (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) deserves some respect. Hayes/Dabernig trained colt that bumped into a good one on debut at Geelong when second to National Choice before going to Sale where he sat off a good speed before easing wider and under hard riding from Mott, he was too good and strong to the line in winning. 1400m is fine and form around him does read well.
Race 3. (12:50) Redkirk Warrior Trophy (bm78) 1400m
See no reason why 1 Barbie’s Fox (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) can’t win again. Was surprisingly big odds when she resumed over 1200m at Caulfield a fortnight back but she loved the strong tempo in front, got into clear air and finished best in a slogging go to win well. Her form from the Spring does read quite well and off that, will be better suited at this trip.
3 She Shao Fly (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is a Team McEvoy trained filly that was kept safe at odds when resuming at Caulfield, with punters thinking she might need the run, but she finished off with real purpose late to run third to Barbie’s Fox. Like her up to 1400m and can sit much closer in the run. Looks one of the hardest to beat.
2 Kuramae (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) has come back in super order. Wide barrier ensured she was ridden like it was a barrier trial first up at Sandown prior to racing over 1400m here a few weeks ago here when sitting off a good speed before being presented wider and was there to be run down, but she showed good ticker to cling on. Got more to come I think and is hard to beat again.
Race 4. (13:30) Almandin (bm78) 1100m
Now seems the right time to test 12 Alfa Oro (Bet Now: $2.15 TOP ODDS) at Saturday metro level. Has looked the part since day one and now is in a rich vein of form, winning his past two. Didn’t beat a great deal on the Synthetic at Pakenham last time out, but it was the manner in which he put them away, more or less like a barrier trial. Confident he can measure up.
Like 11 Montenegro Man (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) here for Kav. Talented animal who hasn’t raced since Feb 15 down the straight here when finishing down the track behind Sirius Suspect, but was at the end of a long prep and perhaps looking for the paddock. Recent jumpout was quite good, he likes the straight course and is a bomb when produced fresh.
14 Pinyin (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) certainly has the talent to take this out but gee she can be hard to follow and trust. Threatened so many times to get a win on the board last prep but she just didn’t get the rub of the green most runs and last start, she was ridden upside down and was a tired horse. Loves the straight course and draws the right part of the track.
Race 5. (14:05) Efficient Hcp 2000m
She’s let punters down badly her past two, but I haven’t been on her, so I’ll side with 11 November Dreaming (Bet Now:Β $6.00). Being by Tavistock out of a Zabeel mare, she’ll eat up 2000m I feel and IMO is looking for it after three runs at 1600m, the latest coming here last Saturday when a close up fifth to Librate. Gets the in form Billy Egan to steer and draws to get back and launch late.
4 Hezafox (Bet Now:Β $5.50) is a Greg Eurell trained three year old that was well backed when he won at Sandown three weeks ago, largely thanks to a lovely steer from Poy, who rode the track to perfection that afternoon. The run prior at Caulfield was very good and his recent overall form sees him as one of the leading contenders here.
16 Blue Ocean (Bet Now:Β $15.00) should relish the 2000m and is a definite chance with the amount of scratchings. Big win I thought at Werribee last time out against the track pattern and it was the first time in his career that he was ridden stone cold, and it worked big time. He’ll handle wet ground and on breeding, 2000m should be ideal.
Race 6. (14:45) The Straight Six 1200m
Back to 1200m with fresh legs I do like for the James Cummings trained 6 Haunted (Bet Now:Β $5.50). He ran over 1400m in a Listed race on the Parks track last time out, back on April 25, where he was near the speed and tried hard, but simply didn’t run the distance out. He seems most effective at 1200m, and last run down the straight, was an eye catcher behind the flying WA mare Fabergino.
2 Malibu Style (Bet Now:Β $8.50) is on the seven day back up and he’s a bloke who has a really good record on the turnaround. Was very game in defeat here last Saturday when chasing a strong speed and just missing when a close up fourth to Prezado. 1200m at this level probably sees him out, but hard fit, racing well and draws the right part of the track.
9 Rich Itch (Bet Now:Β $27.00) is worth another chance. He resumed at Caulfield and did nothing it seemed behind News Girl, but was one of many who seemed to struggle on the bog track and I think just forget he went around. Had jumped out super prior to that, and likes Flemington, so I think he is worth another look here, at likely decent odds.
Race 7. (15:25) Brew's Anniversary Plate-bm84 1800m
2 Nobu (Bet Now:Β $9.00) looks ready to win for Chris Waller. Thought he was no hope at Caulfield with the heavy track given how poor he has been on wet ground before, but he seemed to race really well on it and closed off strongly to run third to Shot Of Irish. He’s ticking along beautifully I think and is ready to win on the spacious Randwick track.
10 Aussie Nugget (Bet Now:Β $3.20) hasn’t done much wrong this time in. Loved the way he knuckled down to win two back over the mile at Bendigo before going to the 1800m at Caulfield and liked the way he finished his race off behind Shot Of Irish, running second. Does he want 2000m? Perhaps, but I think he only has to hold his form to go close.
Fitter and up to 1800m are two big ticks for 17 Desert Path (Bet Now:Β $41.00). Resumed over 1400m at Caulfield two weeks ago in what was a bit of a slog to the line and didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind the in form Viral. He has been a bit hit and miss since coming to Australia, but I think the set up is okay for him to run a positive race at odds.
Race 8. (16:05) Apache Cat Hcp 1600m
11 Savvy Oak (Bet Now:Β $27.00) looks in for a good prep. Resumed at Sandown three weeks ago off the back of an impressive jumpout and liked the way he found the line against the pattern of the day behind Buffalo River. Think he’ll want further than this, but hoping for a good drag up into the race for him and he’ll be strong at the end.
2 So Si Bon (Bet Now:Β $4.40) is a beauty. Once upon a time, he was a bludger, but these days, he is just a beauty and is racing so well. Spanked them two weeks ago at Caulfield when sitting off the speed and Stockdale really rode a confident race on the Group l performer, with the horse doing his part and racing clear. He’s flying…just creeping up in the weights now.
1 Pacodali (Bet Now:Β $12.00) would love this track to be near bottomless but it was a really good resumption from him at Sandown three weeks ago against the pattern of the day. He found the line strongly in his first run for Maddie Raymond, finishing a solid third to Buffalo River, well held but still a definite pass mark. Good second up record and you would assume comes on from that.
Race 9. (16:38) Living Legends Plate 1100m
Have to give 15 Lombardo (Bet Now:Β $12.00) another chance despite a steep class rise. He won like a Stakes horse on debut at Bendigo and smashed the clock. Freshened up and ran at Werribee when nearly Winx odds, but he crabbed on the turn and couldn’t balance up, letting punters down badly. Just can’t sack him off one run because the debut win was electric.
1 Hilo (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is the class runner of the field and that will carry him a long way towards victory. To me, he seems more effective as a sprinter. His run three weeks ago on the Kenso track at Randwick was very good when wide throughout and only felt the pinch late in what is a hot form race. Draws the right part of the track and gets Olly to steer.
If it was on a firmer deck, Id be keen on 5 Alburq (Bet Now:Β $8.00) going close against these. His two runs this time in have been really good, both on a wet track. Latest came two weeks ago at Sandown when chasing hard but clearly no match for the well supported Final Man, a noted swimmer. Think back on top of the ground here, he can win.
