A bumper card of racing has been assembled for Rosehill this Saturday, highlighted by the Group l Golden Rose (1400m), fast becoming a stallion making race should a colt win it. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:10) Cabra-Vale Diggers Handicap (72) 1300m
I’ll side with the Victorian three year old 10 Skidman (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS). The Maher/Eustace team train this colt, who was pretty sharp in winning his maiden two back at Warracknabeal over 1200m before stepping back to 1000m at Ballarat and just finding Golden Script too sharp. Back up in trip, gate one, Corey Brown steering, he’ll do me.
7 Silent Explorer (Bet Now: $21.00 FAT ODDS) is a David Payne trained three year old who trialled well prior to resuming last Wednesday at Canterbury where he was a hard luck story, like several from that meeting, when fourth to the swooper Major Wager. Like he’s backing up quickly and did run well behind stablemate Toulouse over 1400m here three back.
11 Ducale (Bet Now: $41.00 FAT ODDS) is a filly I could speck at longer odds. Paul Perry trains this filly, showed good promise in her first prep during the Winter, racing three times, with a win coming at the third start at Canterbury over the 1550m in good style. Has been given a couple of trials to prepare for her resumption and we saw last Saturday with Ragged Rascal that the stable can get them right fresh.
Race 2. (12:50) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1500m
11 Think Like A Fox (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS) for me in the Highway. Danny Williams trains this handy mare, who was heavily backed when racing over 1400m last Friday at Goulburn where she probably should have won but just gave away too much head start but you had to like the way she finished off behind The Soloist. Up to 1500m with a more genuine tempo here, she’ll get her chance.
3 Seeblume (Bet Now: $11.00 FAT ODDS) has to be seriously respected here. Daughter of Sebring for Joseph Ible who resumed at Randwick at the midweeks and she produced one of the runs of the day considering where she was against the bias behind Savvan. Horror second up record is the only worry, otherwise she ticks every other box and goes close.
13 Lucciola Belle (Bet Now: $17.00 FAT ODDS) is a Wayne Wilkes trained mare who I reckon has come back in super order. Both runs this time in have come at Taree resuming at 1250m and being a real eye catcher before getting too far back at over 1400m. She’s racing as if the 1500m will be perfect and always have to respect the stable when they travel.
Race 3. (13:25) Gloaming Stakes 1800m
1 Tarka (Bet Now: $3.10 FAT ODDS) continues to be underrated and he continues to step up to the plate. Lovely win two back at the Warwick Farm midweeks before going to the Stan Fox where he was somewhat unwanted in betting but an absolute pearler from J Mac got the David Payne trained three year old. He too looks a real stayer and he’ll have no issue with 1800m.
2 Irukandji (Bet Now: $5.25 FAT ODDS) looks a three year old who will be a real chance in the Spring Champion/Derby. Might need one more but a win here certainly wouldn’t surprise. Loomed to be a winning threat in the Stan Fox but just gave way late when fourth to Tarka. He’ll eat up the extra trip and on top of the ground, he’s a threat.
6 Panzerfaust (Bet Now: $8.00 FAT ODDS) rises a fair bit here in grade/depth, but this Paul Messara trained filly has something about her I like. Respectable effort two back against the bias in a Randwick Highway before going to Wyong Cup Day where she took on scrubs and she bolted in. Races as if a further trip will suit and she will be strong late.
Race 4. (14:00) JRA Trophy 2400m
Having a throw at the stumps here via 3 Etah James (Bet Now: $8.00 FAT ODDS), a more than capable mare for Matt Cumani. Liked the way she closed off first up at Caulfield behind Plein Ciel before going to the 2040m at the Valley where she was wide no cover for the trip against the bias and the effort told on her late behind Trap For Fools. Good record beyond 2200m+, and she has upside plus a turn of foot.
2 Harper’s Choice (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS) is eight days between runs for the Gerald Ryan camp after racing in the Newcastle Cup where i thought he had his chance behind Carzoff, with a lovely steer from Avdulla seemingly giving the horse his chance to win but he just didn’t have the zip of Auvray and Carzoff. This looks more his go and like he is backing up.
4 Dark Eyes (Bet Now: $13.00 FAT ODDS) could be an improver. He is on the quick back up for the WaterBott team after contesting the Newcastle Cup last Friday where he was on speed and looked to get his chance but dropped out and was quite disappointing I thought behind Carzoff. Stable proved last week with Siege Of Quebec that they can back these horses up with success.
Race 5. (14:35) Shannon Stakes 1500m
Keen on 6 Youngstar (Bet Now: $3.20). This Group l winning mare for Chris Waller looked to go outstanding to the eye when she resumed in the Tramway three weeks ago, closing off strongly nearer the inside behind stablemate Comin Through. Up to 1500m, fitter, look two big ticks for her and we know she has class.
5 Noire (Bet Now: $3.50) is a mare flying for Chris Waller. Trialled very well prior to resuming in the Sheraco where she closed off strongly from the back alongside stablemate Invincibella but the verdict just went the way of the mare, who got the win. This girl has a fab second up record and the pace in front should be ideal for her to finish off.
4 Kingsguard (Bet Now: $9.50) could be an improver on top of the ground. This bloke resumed in the Theo Marks a fortnight ago where he just looked in need of the run but to be fair he was far from disgraced behind Home Of The Brave. He should take natural improvement from that outing and up to 1500m and firmer footing helps his cause.
Race 6. (15:10) Golden Pendant 1400m
1 Prompt Response (Bet Now: $5.50) for me. The WaterBott stable have been going awful over the last few weeks but as the Spring heats up, I’m hoping the stable can bounce back, starting with this Group l winning mare, who could have headed to the breeding barn after winning the Tatts Tiara during the Brisbane Winter Carnival but she’s back for the Spring. 1400m fresh tells me there’s intent to run well and that looks the case off the back of a couple of impressive trials.
10 Shumookh (Bet Now: $7.50) is a stablemate of Prompt Response who is just under a month between runs since resuming in the Mona Lisa at Wyong where she attempted to lead all the way and to her credit, she gave a very solid kick but just found Savatiano too good. That mare ran a beauty in the Tibbie so the form reads well and a recent tick over trial was pretty good to the eye.
7 Princess Posh (Bet Now: $11.00) is on the quick back up for the Kris Lees team. She was good fresh behind Savatiano in the Mona Losa before going to the Tibbie where Schofield gave her an absolute peach of a steer, trucking up behind the speed before getting clear air and wearing down Savatiano. Like the fact she’s backing up and should be close to hard fit.
Race 7. (15:50) Golden Rose 1400m
Gravitating towards the best horse, which for mine is clearly 2 The Autumn Sun (Bet Now: $4.20). He resumed in the Stan Fox a fortnight ago and if you were on, gee it was a tough watch. To be fair, it was more a case of J Mac on Tarka riding an outstanding race rather than McEvoy slaughtering this colt. Fast run 1400m looks perfect.
I’m not sure what to make of the Run To The Rose. 1 Lean Mean Machine (Bet Now: $5.00) won the race, and visually, the win was outstanding with a touch of arrogance. The margin flattered his rivals given he was badly held up yet still savaged the line to win. Two queries are can he improve off that and can he work harder for the win because he was somewhat helped by the bias. Whatever the case, I think you just have to trust your eye.
11 Seabrook (Bet Now: $8.50) is the Champagne Stakes winner for Mick Price who resumed in the McNeil at Caulfield where he was no match for impressive winner Native Soldier but stuck on very well to run third. Fast run 1400m looks perfect for her and she is a Group l winner, so under the weight scale, she’s a leading contender.
Race 8. (16:30) Gow-Gates Handicap (88) 1400m
Happy to stick with 5 Mandylion (Bet Now: $4.80). She’s flying this prep for Gwenda Markwell and got a well deserved win on the board a fortnight ago over 1500m here against the mares, controlling things beautifully in front and giving a really good kick when asked for the effort. Back 100m no issue and should be able to control things in front. I think she’s a top three special if that eventuates.
I think 8 Tip Top (Bet Now: $8.00) can only run well. Got a well deserved win on the board last time at the Randwick midweeks, aided by a lovely steer from Tim Clark, but credit to the horse too given he had to lump 60kg. Drops a fair bit in weight and I am expecting the track to play towards those on speed/rail, which is where he’ll be from the draw.
I’m very wary of 11 Savacool (Bet Now: $6.00), a quality mare who resumes for Chris Waller and we’ve seen for this Spring that the 3YO fillies form from the Queensland Winter has stood up. She didn’t pull up 100% post the Queensland Oaks and was tipped out. Loved the way she trialled at the Gold Coast and she certainly has the class to beat these.
Race 9. (17:10) Fugen Handicap (88) 2000m
I’m hoping we can get an each price about 11 Jake’s Hill (Bet Now: $13.00). I reckon Chris Waller has this horse going really well this time in. Luckless when he resumed at the Gold Coast behind Saxton Rock before going to the Randwick mile three weeks ago where he again didn’t have much luck when appearing to have a bit to offer behind Goodfella. Up to 2000m third up looks perfect, first time at the trip since arriving in Australia, keen to see what he does.
7 Raqeeq (Bet Now: $10.00) has been costly but he gets a great chance here. Chris Waller trains this stayer, who was down to run at Doomben last Saturday, where he looked a moral, but was taken out and instead runs here. His form has been decent, but has been getting too far back. If he can take up a decent spot, he’ll take beating.
12 Opposition (Bet Now: $9.00) is a definite improver. Eye catching resumption behind Paret before stepping up to 1800m on a bog and he wasn’t quite as effective second up behind stablemate Zourkhan. One at 2000m+ in Australia which saw him run second to blacktype performer Lycurgus. Reads well for this.
