Eight races will be run and won at Ascot this Saturday, with strong field sizes in the quaddie legs. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (15:48) : Get The Tabtouch Plate 1000m:
Back Me: 10 Massagi (Bet Now: $2.70) is a filly on debut for the McAuliffe yard. Didn’t quite set the world on fire in her first trial but she looked much better next time out with Pike aboard and won the trial quite impressively. Not sure how strong this race is, so I’ll be happy to be with her here.
Big Danger: 1 Frosty Beverage (Bet Now: $5.50) is a gelding having his first start for Dan Morton. This youngster has only had the one public appearance, which came at Belmont on January 9 when running second. Looked to go about his business quite nicely and confident he can run a forward race here.
Long Shot: 5 Lucy Mae (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Stratum filly that resumes for the Ted Martinovich yard. She debuted at Belmont in the early part of October where she was kept quite safe in the market and ran fifth to Achernar Star. No trials leading in, but she has the prep/run under the belt and should only improve off that here.
Race Two (16:28) : Perth Racing Membership Maiden 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Blue Houdini (Bet Now: $2.80) looks the safe way to go here. This four year old resumed over 1200m at Pinjarra a fortnight ago where he got back in the ruck before presenting wider and finishing off strongly late to run third to Dash Dot Dash. That looks the right form for this kind of race, draws well and Pike steers.
Big Danger: 2 Faulty (Bet Now: $4.40) was a beaten odds on pop when resuming at Albany before going to that Dash Dot Dash race mentioned above where he was ridden off the speed and responded okay to it, finishing off to run fifth. I think if they go forward here, he won’t have to do much work, and being third up, he should be ready fitness wise.
Long Shot: 7 Miss Singapore (Bet Now: $8.00) can be a frustrating horse to follow but there is no denying the talent is under the hood. Just needs to put it all together. Formerly with Peter Fernie but is now wit Lindsey Smith and comes here with no trials, so fitness levels are unknown but on form and ability, she is right in this.
Race Three (17:08) : Lavazza Handicap (1MW) 1500m:
Back Me: 2 Veuve De Vega (Bet Now: $6.00) on top for me but with not much confidence in a real trap race. He ran over 1200m here three weeks ago where he sat on the pace and was just outsprinted when the leader kicked. Looks well placed up to 1500m, but 1200 to 1500 with three weeks between runs is the query hence why I am going into this race with not much confidence.
Big Danger: 3 General Husson (Bet Now: $2.20) looks a little risk at running a strong 1500m but on form she is one of the hardest to beat. She ran over 1400m at Pinjarra two weeks back where she attempted to lead all the way and when asked for the effort by Azzopardi, she gave a really good kick but just tired the final 75m. That does leave me with some reservations about her running 1500, but she’s in the right stable.
Long Shot: 9 Could Be Queen (Bet Now: $34.00) debuted over 1400m at Bunbury and hit the line strongly to run second to Dukeazza before stepping back to 1300m at Pinjarra last Sunday where she chased hard and just missed out when a narrow third to Fontainebleu. Back up in distance looks perfect, she draws well and has enormous upside.
Race Four (17:44) : Heineken Handicap (66+) 1400m:
Back Me: 6 Point (Bet Now: $3.50) looks the clear way to go here. Put together two very good efforts to kick off the prep before going to the 1500m here three weeks back where he was ridden an absolute treat by Pike to take advantage of a good spot nearer the speed before angling clear and finishing off best in a close go. I think back to 1400m will suit this horse perfectly and he ticks the boxes for me.
Big Danger: 4 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $3.50) is racing so well at the moment but he just can’t quite crack it for a win. He sat wide no cover over 1400m at Pinjarra two weeks ago and really had every right to drop out but he just kept finding and was only pipped late by the in form Red Publisher. Just needs luck from the tricky draw here to go close to breaking through.
Long Shot: 7 Baraki Beats (Bet Now: $18.00) comes through that race won by Point where he was quite ordinary despite a relatively soft trip outside the tempo. Load of gear changes to hopefully spark him into some sort of positive mindset, because his form from last prep would go close to knocking this field off.
Race Five (18:20) : Stone Motherless After The Races Handicap (72+) 1000m:
Back Me: 8 Cuanzo (Bet Now: $3.50) on top for me. This son of Oratorio resumed over 1100m here three weeks back where he got back in the run before being presented wider on the turn before really savaging the line and grabbing the talented Just Act Natural right on the peg. Back to 1000m is no issue, he has upside, draws well and has that lethal turn of foot.
Big Danger: 5 Bombs Away (Bet Now: $4.40) is a horse who is normally ridden near the speed but they adopted tactics of riding him cold last Saturday here and boy did it pay off as he really attacked the post to grab them in the shadows for a super win. They might have found the key to him now, and he can go right on with it.
Long Shot: 3 Dueton (Bet Now: $21.00) was okay fresh in the Summer Scorcher before racing behind Bombs Away last Saturday where nothing went right for him at all, getting stuck very wide without cover and finishing last. Draws much better here, and talent/class wise, he probably has these, so for mine he is definitely worth a peanut or two each way.
Race Six (19:00) : Auto Classic BMW Chinese New Year Raceday Feb 4 Handicap (1MW) 1200m:
Back Me: 9 Presentatie (Bet Now: $3.50) is a talented mare for Team Williams who resumed over 1100m here three weeks back where she just got a mile back in the run but finished her race off very strongly in the piece. Looks suited up to 1200m, has enormous upside and with the speed, she will be finishing off hard late.
Big Danger: 5 Shady Grey (Bet Now: $2.90) also comes through the same 1100m race contested by Presentatie and his effort in defeat was also very good given he too was back in the ruck and had to make up a stack of ground but he did and wasn’t far off Cuanzo. He too is suited rising 100m in trip and has the fitness edge.
Long Shot: 1 Common Approach (Bet Now: $26.00) is racing in the bush these days but he deserves another crack in town after some really good efforts at Esperance Bay, the latest coming a tick over a fortnight back over 1300m when sitting back and running on. Rises sharply in grade here but he has performed well in town before. One for exotics.
Race Seven (19:40) : Australia Day BBQ Next Saturday Handicap (66+) 1800m:
Back Me: 9 Gatting (Bet Now: $2.60) for me here and one of the better bets on the program. He ran over 1400m at Pinjarra against his own age two weeks ago where he just seemed to get a mile back in the run and was left with too much to do, but on the flip side, he was there to win with 100m to go but just couldn’t quite finish it off. Up to 1800m is a query for sure, but Pike remains on and outside Juicing Carrots, this is a thin race.
Big Danger: 1 Juicing Carrots (Bet Now: $8.00) is a talented gelding who is low flying this time in, winning two from two. He was wide no cover when racing over the mile at Pinjarra two weeks back but that didn’t matter to him because he just cruised up to them on the turn and fought hard over the concluding stages. Again draws awkwardly but he showed last start he can work and still win.
Long Shot: 11 Le Schiller (Bet Now: $151.00) is one to perhaps include in wider exotics. He hasn’t raced for 24 days since racing over 2200m at Bunbury where he just sat off the speed and couldn’t really come on at all behind Secondment. Back to 1800m on the fresh side suits and he is in the right stable.
Race Eight (20:15) : Summer Bright Lager Handicap (1MW) 1600m:
Back Me: 10 Romelo (Bet Now: $3.80) looks the safe way to go in the get out. He resumed over 1500m here three weeks back where he got back in the ruck and took an eternity to get going but his final 150m was pretty solid behind stablemate Point. Form has been franked, Pike remains on, upside, draws well, suited at the mile…ticks alot of boxes.
Big Danger: 4 First Affair (Bet Now: $3.70) has been given a 28 day break since racing over 1800m here where he had a charmed run behind the speed and got the split at the right time but just didn’t quite find the peg first when a neck fourth to Macavity. Two horses from that race have since won, so the form has held up and he does look well placed back to the mile.
Long Shot: 5 Hedlander Boy (Bet Now: $6.00) had the 1/1 sit all the way over 1400m here last Saturday and she did give a tidy little kick when asked but felt the pinch late when fourth to Liberty Rise. I think she can slide over here without doing too much work and could well be one to include at odds to spice up the dividend.
BEST BET: Race Seven Number 9 Gatting
