Saturday metro racing in Brisbane returns to Doomben this Saturday, headlined by The Phoenix (1600m) for the juveniles. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire circuit.
The Phoenix 🏆: View the Field for the Phoenix
Race 1. (11:37) Mount Franklin Plate (c3) 1110m
5 Howwonderfullifeis (Bet Now: $1.55) looks one of the better gambles on the card. Tony Gollan trained filly that showed her class when winning first up at the Gold Coast before going to the Mick Dittman when near a hot speed and fought on strongly when fourth to Aquitaine. If she can see out the 1110m, which I think she can, she’s too good for these.
3 Magnolia Power (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Kris Lees trained mare that comes to Queensland after resuming at Tamworth in the Lightning on Gunnedah Cup Day when a closing third to Malahat. Form out of that race has been solid and always have to respect the state switch for the stable. Gets a lovely run from the gate and only runs well.
1 Sanglier (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of Albrecht that resumes for the Michael Costa team. Hasn’t raced since December 7 over 1200m here when down the track behind She’s Furline. Has been given a good break and two trials leading in have been encouraging. If this track remains to have genuine give in it, he comes right into play.
Race 2. (12:12) Tab Long May We Play Hcp (c6) 1200m
3 Hold The Line (Bet Now: $1.90) should take this out. David Vandyke trained mare that has contested blacktype in both runs back from a spell. Good second first up in the Chief De Beers behind Pennino before going to the Hinkler where not much went her way behind Scallopini. Finds a lovely race here and should be winning.
2 Sofie’s Gold Class (Bet Now: $3.70) is a talented mare that resumes for Debbie Newham. Put together a couple of impressive wins during the Autumn before being spelled, potentially with the Carnival in mind, but it came around too soon. Instead resumes here but the recent trial was very good. May want further, so watch the market.
1 Bring It Home Pop (Bet Now: $5.00) is a huge market watch here. Was keen on him when he resumed over 1000m at Eagle Farm four weeks ago but did bugger all behind Wirnpa. Was found to have had Cardiac Arrhythmia post race, so clear excuse there. Trialled a couple of weeks back at the Sunny Coast and looked good so he can bounce back big time here.
Race 3. (12:47) Roku Gin (bm80) 2200m
Going to give 2 Advance Warning (Bet Now: $4.20) another chance. Loved the way he toughed it out two back at the Gold Coast before racing at Eagle Farm a fortnight back where he was terrible behind Stardome but pulled up with laceration in the mouth, so there was an excuse why he gave up so poorly. Better than that, so gets another look.
5 Stardome (Bet Now: $4.60) is holding his form really well this prep for Chris Waller. Put together a couple of handy placings on the board before going to Eagle Farm when well specked at a price and under a lovely ride from Luke Dittman, the gelding was too good for his rivals in finishing best. That was his first look at the trip and he passed with flying colours, so hard to beat.
9 Ocean Addict (Bet Now: $7.00) is the fresh blood here with a rise in trip and more upside than most. Ran over 1800m at Eagle Farm four weeks ago and worked home okay without really threatening behind Red Stina, who was okay last Saturday at Stakes level, so the form doesn’t read too bad and up to 2200m is a big tick for her.
Race 4. (13:22) Brc Members (bm90) 1615m
D-Day for 4 Reckless Choice (Bet Now: $7.00) but I think he can take this out. Both runs back from a spell have come over 1400m at Eagle Farm, each time finishing behind Red Chase. Latest of those came two weeks ago and on face value, he was plain, but they ran the last 600m in a tick over 33, so he had no chance. Much better placed here and gets to the mile.
Back in trip is the knock with 9 Mangione (Bet Now: $7.50) but Chris Waller has him flying. Merit in his effort two back on the Kenso track before going to Eagle Farm over 1800m when given an absolute peach of a ride from Ryan Maloney and he was far too good for his rivals in a lovely piece of placement by Waller. Back to 1600m is interesting but weights wise, he’s well in again.
1 Gresham (Bet Now: $8.50) was once upon a time hit and miss but his past few runs have seen him race much more consistently. Latest run came a fortnight back at Eagle Farm when chasing stablemate Mangione. Had his chance to win but was still good in defeat. Proven weight carrier…first look at Doomben perhaps a query.
Race 5. (13:57) The Phoenix 1615m
8 See Marie (Bet Now: $7.00) has been crying out for 1600m for a while now and she finally gets it here, so I’m in her corner. Last three runs have come over 1400m, winning three back before two strong placings subsequent, the latest at the Gold Coast in what was a real sit/sprint. She’ll eat up the mile and hopefully doesn’t spot them too much head start.
9 The Actuary (Bet Now: $5.50) looks like she will be fine at the mile for Tony Gollan. Notable drifter in betting when racing over 1350m here at the midweeks but she defied the betting drift and surged hard late from off the back to score a good win off a slow tempo. Off that win, don’t see 1600m being an issue and she’s in the right stable.
5 Kefalonia (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Chris Munce trained juvenile that debuted over 1350m here at the midweeks. He was well specked at odds and gave a great sight out on speed, fighting hard and kicking strongly, only getting bloused late by The Actuary. On breeding, 1600m is no issue for him and he’s got the racing pattern to give himself every chance.
Race 6. (14:37) Gallopers Sports Club (bm75) 1350m
11 Maozi (Bet Now: $2.25) is hard to beat here for Team Edmonds. Ran over 1400m at the Gold Coast last time out where Fradd had to make his run nearer the inside, which wasn’t the best ground, but she stayed on and was good in defeat when second to Command’N’Conquer. One of a few here who should love a fast run 1350m.
13 Stylish Saga (Bet Now: $5.50) has been a bit disappointing this time in for Chris Anderson. Admittedly hasn’t been beaten far in the three runs back from a spell, he has let punters down given he’s been hard in the market each time, the latest when a close up fourth to the in form Plenty. He’s got the ability to take this out and a rise to 1350m might be what he’s looking for.
2 Brains (Bet Now: $12.00) coming back in trip interests me. His last couple of runs have come over 1800m at the Gold Coast and I think you’d have to mark him down as disappointing. I was keen on him running well last time out and he got the right run into the race, but found little when asked. Perhaps a fast run 1350m will bring out a positive turnaround.
Race 7. (15:17) Ascot Green Hcp 1200m
Think there is good value about 9 Euro Belle (Bet Now: $8.50) for Gillian Heinrich. Resumed over 1100m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago when well backed but just got a bit too far back and couldn’t finish it off well enough, eventually running fourth. Like her up to 1200m and last prep, she placed behind Sugar Boom in the Mode Plate, which clearly reads well.
Good test here for 2 Lepreezy (Bet Now: $9.50) but she has brilliant early toe and will give a bold sight. Three weeks between runs since running second at Rockhampton when attempting to lead throughout but couldn’t quite finish it off. Regular rider is back on and though drawn wide, she has the speed to come across, lead them up and give them something to chase.
6 Say Haya (Bet Now: $7.00) is suited back to this sort of level. Just found the Mick Dittman a bit rich last time out behind Aquitaine but was far from disgraced in defeat. She’s got a brilliant finale on her when right and this is the sort of race where she can produce that, so could easily back her each way and is a must for multiples.
Race 8. (15:52) Souths Sports Club Hcp 1200m
3 Iced (Bet Now: $5.50) looks the one. Jackie Crompton trained gelding that sat back off a fast speed in the Mick Dittman at Eagle Farm but loved the way he found the line late when second to Aquitaine. That form looks to be A1 for this and the rise to 1200m looks perfect. Just a matter of where he gets to in the run from a tricky draw.
4 Kailk (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Tony Haydont trained son of Champions Gallery that was somewhat unwanted in betting when resuming in the Mick Dittman but I thought he was far from disgraced in defeat behind Aquitaine after sitting wide throughout. This looks more his level and is 2/2 second up, so he’s very likeable here.
I think back to 1200m will suit 5 Scout (Bet Now: $14.00). He ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast last time out where he was a touch keen in the run due to the somewhat slow early tempo and that left him without many petrol tickets left for the straight behind The Sinner. I think a fast run 1200m is more his go and his best is clearly good enough.
Race 9. (16:36) Tab Long May We Play Hcp 1110m
12 Ozark (Bet Now: $4.80) has done a pretty good job in recent times and he does seem a horse who likes racing on wet ground, so with conditions to suit, going his way. Ran over 1000m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago when closing off hard nearer the inside when beaten narrowly by a quality mare in Jami Lady. Gets a suck run off a good speed and is hard to beat.
7 Just Orm (Bet Now: $17.00) can be a definite improver here. Impressive winner three back at the Sunny Coast in a similar race to this before being sent to Stakes grade where he was outclassed but far from disgraced, the latest in the Hinkler behind Scallopini. Tends to save his best for Doomben and back to this level, he’s a leading chance.
16 Royal Witness (Bet Now: $8.50) is a gelding who should appreciate the weight relief. He’s carried 60kg and 58kg respectively at his past two starts, the latest in the Jami Lady race at Eagle Farm when a game third after doing work on speed. Not sure he’s got much upside, but the weight relief certainly helps, so a knockout contender.
