The Kensington track at Randwick is where Sydney metro racing takes place on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:40) Cellarbrations Hcp 1000m
Ideally would love 5 El Buena (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) at 1200m but Blinkers on hopefully sharpens him up. Just worried back to 1000m is a negative but there should be plenty of pressure in front so he’ll get his chance. Ran over 1100m here last time and got close to knocking off Ocean Emperor. Form out of that race was ticked off last Saturday so he has to be respected here.
If he runs up to the trials, 1 Wild Ruler (Bet Now: $2.80 TOP ODDS) wins. Looks a very smart colt for Team Snowden that resumes, having not raced since scoring a super debut win in the Inglis Nursery back on December 14 before being spelled. The first trial was much better than the second trial, but both were still impressive and he looks ready to go. Why I’m not with him is because of the wide gate and there is pressure inside and outside of him.
10 Ballistic Lover (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Smart Missile that resumes for the Joe Pride stable. Hasn’t raced since debuting at Kembla when off the speed and chasing strongly to finish second to the well performed Bartley. Two trials leading in have been good, draws well and gets the claim for Robbie Dolan so he’s likeable.
Race 2. (12:15) Coolmore (bm78) 1800m
5 New Arrangement (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is gradually getting better with racing in his first Australian prep. Chris Waller trained import who ran over this track/distance last time out and seemed to have his chance, but have to keep in mind the front pair controlled things to suit themselves and Welsh Legend ticked that form off last Saturday. Leading contender.
7 Amitto (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) is having a super prep for James Cummings. Loved the way she knuckled down to win two back at Newcastle over the mile before remaining at the trip at Warwick Farm in testing conditions but she lapped it up and was much too good. Ready for the rise to 1800m and this isn’t an overly strong race.
1 Canasta (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) looks to have a bit of ticker about him and with more to come, I’ll give him respect. Bjorn Baker trains this gelding, who did it on speed when winning over 1550m here last time out. Had to fight for it because Agassi loomed to win, but his staying prowess came to the fore and was too good, just. Like him up to 1800m and is hard to run down again.
Race 3. (12:50) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1400m
7 Party Host (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is the one for me that could well be silly odds. Wayne Wilkes trains this gelding at Taree and I thought his resumption in a strong Provincial race at Newcastle was excellent. Got a long way back in the run but loved the way he found the line late behind Handspot and produced some of the best late splits of the meeting. Second up syndrome potentially on the cards, but can’t ignore that effort.
2 Toro Toro (Bet Now: $2.80 TOP ODDS) should be fine at 1400m. Stephen Jones trains this three year old, who ran second in the Fender Highway from two weeks back on the course proper here. He didn’t stop chasing despite being headed early on in the straight and showed good ticker late. Think he’ll be okay at the trip and is one of the leading chances.
8 Foxie La Belle (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is a key threat for me. She comes through the Highway from two weeks ago and could easily make a case she should have fought the finish out. Just had no luck in the straight and went around like it was a barrier trial. Strong market support for her too that day which is noteworthy. She’s had three runs at 1200m now. 1400m is ideal.
Race 4. (13:25) Sky Racing Active (72) 1000m
9 L’Cosmo (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) is a Lonhro filly that has returned in good order for Team Snowden. Resumed here on April 15 when just off the speed, without cover, before presenting wider and finishing off strongly, just missing out on picking up Dirty Work in a close finish. Back to 1000m is a query, but she’ll be strong late provided the resumption didn’t bust her.
7 Corcra (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) has been excellent in two runs back from a spell for Bjorn Baker, winning both outings. Latest of those two wins came over 1000m at Wyong where he was on speed throughout and gave them a spanking in running fast time for the day. Not sure he can lead all the way and win. Hopefully can take a sit.
6 Calipari (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) deserves a crack in town. Mick Minervini has this guy flying at the moment, winning his past two, the latest at Muswellbrook over 1000m when not leading, against his norm, but he put them away, was strong to the line and ran okay time. His best chance of winning will be if he leads and rolls along.
Race 5. (14:05) Inglis B'mare Sale 10 May (78) 1100m
11 Up Trumpz (Bet Now: $13.00) is on top, keeping in mind he is also an acceptor for the Town Plate at Wagga on Thursday. Resumes for Joe Cleary and is a very consistent type that is rarely far away from the price. Two times he has resumed in town, he’s won one and worked home strongly in the other, and with J Mac booked, looks to be good intent.
3 Kylease (Bet Now: $4.50) is a speedy mare for Joe Pride that resumes. She’s a horse that needs things to fall into place. That being a good track and a soft lead. She gets the first box ticked, but not so sure about the second box. In saying that, her trial win at Warwick Farm was very sharp and this track, being on speed can be an advantage.
2 Isorich (Bet Now: $21.00) is an absolute marvel for Wayne Seelin. Was on him at the good odds when he raced over this track/distance last start and sitting off a good speed, JVO got him to the outside and he finished off with real purpose to get the job done. Given we’ve had the Carnival, this meeting is more a midweek class meeting, so I think he can measure up here for sure.
Race 6. (14:45) Ranvet's Power Formula (bm78) 1300m
Want to give 3 Sakura (Bet Now: $6.50) a chance here. Sepoy mare for James Cummings that resumed on a wet track at Warwick Farm and I’m not sure she was entirely comfortable in that going behind Tricky Gal. Her best efforts have clearly been on firmer footing, which is what I think we’ll get this weekend, so giving her a chance against these.
7 My Demetra (Bet Now: $7.50) is a pretty consistent mare for Team Snowden that is knocking on the door to take this out. Strong third to Tricky Gal two back at Warwick Farm before backing up a week later on the Kenso track over 1400m and just missing out on the win when second to Laila De Vega. Hard fit, in form…just needs to greet the judge first.
1 So Taken (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Chris Waller trained mare that might well be back on track. Far from disgraced in the Birthday Card behind Miss Exfactor before going to the Randwick 1200m a few weeks ago and not much went her way in the straight and should have finished closer behind Snitz. She’s nearing a win I feel and gets a great chance here.
Race 7. (15:25) Quincy Seltzer (bm88) 1250m
I think back onto firmer footing and back to 1250m are two big ticks for the James Cummings trained 9 Hilo (Bet Now: $3.10). Three weeks between runs since contesting the South Pacific at Randwick where he just did that little bit too much work on speed on a testing track and couldn’t quite sustain it but was still game in defeat behind Indy Car. Looks a much better set up here and spanked them first up at this track.
8 Hightail (Bet Now: $4.80) is a very talented son of Written Tycoon for Team Snowden that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast when a very good fourth from the back behind Alligator Blood. Wasn’t asked to do much in a recent trial, but can sprint well fresh and did bolt up at this track as a 2YO.
2 Sir Bacchus (Bet Now: $18.00) has been a ripper for a number of years and he could be the sleeper here at odds. Hasn’t raced since the Canberra Carnival when contesting the National Sprint and I thought he was excellent in defeat when a close up third to Cuba. How strong that form is, not sure, but has had a let up and looked to go about his business nicely in a recent trial.
Race 8. (16:05) Tab (bm88) 1400m
I’ll take a punt on 12 Bandersnatch (Bet Now: $2.80), a Gerald Ryan trained three year old that resumes. Had a really good Summer prep, winning three of four and finishing second in the other outing. Been given a good break and I’ve really liked the way he has trialled leading in. Hopefully can lead or box seat and prove hard to beat.
3 Phaistos (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to be in for a good prep for James Cummings. Resumed in a much stronger race on the course proper here two weeks ago and was hailed as the winner when hitting the front, only to be nabbed right on the line by stablemate Ranier. That was a Benchmark 100 and he now is back to 88 grade. Hard to beat, clearly.
6 Outrageous (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of All Too Hard for Team Hawkes that resumed over 1200m at Randwick a fortnight back where he was ridden negatively from the wider gate but loved the way he found the line late when third to Snitz. Two time second up winner and much better suited at 1400m, so hopefully can sit much closer in the run.
Race 9. (16:45) Schweppes (bm78) 1550m
13 California Salto (Bet Now: $4.20) for me in the get out for Team Snowden. This filly was good late when resuming at Hawkesbury before going to the James Carr at Randwick and was far from disgraced in defeat behind a star filly in Rubisaki. Gets a lovely run from the inside gate and is racing as if she will eat up the 1550m against these.
6 Juventus (Bet Now: $4.20) has had a super prep for Kris Lees despite what the form guide says. First three runs will say he didn’t do a great deal but he was good each time. Then raced over 1400m here at the midweeks and it was a masterclass from Opie Bosson, showing initiative to get on speed and he was far too good for them. He’ll have no trouble with the trip and rates highly.
11 Adana (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Snitzel for Chris Waller that had one soft trial prior to resuming over 1400m at Warwick Farm where he was back in the run and didn’t really make up any ground but at the same time didn’t go backwards when midfield behind Surreal Step. Back on top of the ground should suit him and can run a much improved race.
