Eight races will be run and won at Ascot this Saturday where it is Scenic Blast Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:58) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Maiden 1400m
Want to give 14 True Image (Bet Now: $3.50) another chance. The market said she had no legs when resuming here a fortnight back over 1100m. The market got it right thought as she didn’t come on at all behind No Mean Feet. Up to 1400m looks perfect for her, got the run under the belt now, depth not as strong…If she runs up to her efforts from the first prep, she probably wins.
15 Rose Thief (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Bruce Watkins trained mare who had trialled up really well on a number of occasions prior to debuting over 1200m at Albany where she got back in the run and worked to the line strongly late when third to Turpin’s Daughter. She’ll improve with the run I think and up to 1400m on a bigger track, she looks a key contender against this lot.
7 Kendel’s Mee Dad (Bet Now: $19.00) is a huge watch. Vaughn Sigley trains this gelding, who is first up. He had two runs in the Winter and for the most part, he was dreadful and didn’t fire a shot. Been given a good break and his trial win over 950m on January 14 at Lark Hill looked very impressive to the eye and the time backed up what you saw. Keen to see what he does.
Race 2. (16:38) Kirin Megumi Plate 1000m
1 Amarillo Rose (Bet Now: $1.75) is a Dion Luciani trained filly who is resuming. She debuted at Belmont back in early October where she was relatively unwanted in betting but she led all the way and despite getting the staggers late, she clung on. Been given a good break and has been brought back to fitness with a 400m trial win. Nothing flash, but she’s come back okay to the eye.
8 Wicklow Princess (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Verrazano filly for Rhys Radford that makes her debut. This girl trialled on January 21 at Belmont over 1000m where she was on speed all the way and despite a little bit of riding, she was impressive I thought and won it well. Looks to have had a decent enough grounding for start and I liked what I saw in that Belmont trial win.
7 Venetian Jewel (Bet Now: $7.50) is a daughter of Snippetson having her first start for the Simon Miller stable. She ran second to Wicklow Princess in the Belmont trial mentioned above and in isolation, her trial was good, but for mine she was comfortably held by Wicklow Princess, so turning the tables here, off that trial, I don’t see happening, but have to respect the stable with their juveniles.
Race 3. (17:18) Happy Birthday June Hamblett Handicap 1100m
1 Fairview (Bet Now: $2.35) did some very good things for me a couple of weeks ago so I won’t be dropping off here. She ran over 1200m here and sat off a really fast speed before Carbery angled her to the outside and she came with a brilliant finale to nab them on the line and was just silly odds at $20+. Won’t be getting that here, and is creeping up in the weights scale, but with a likely hot tempo, I’m hoping she’ll be one of the last standing at the end.
2 Snowchino (Bet Now: $5.00) is a David Harrison trained filly who ran a couple of really good races in the Winter, winning those races before being tipped out. Trialled on January 14 at Lark Hill and for mine was just fair behind stablemate Mystery Affair. Off that trial, I couldn’t back her to win, but she might just be a race day horse, and she’s got the runs on the board.
7 Swanky Lass (Bet Now: $13.00) steps up a fair bit in grade/depth but you have to like the way she’s going about it. Bolted up fresh to break the maiden at Bunbury before racing there again where she was on speed and fought hard but had to run a narrow second to Red Moon. 1100m at this level is a little bit of an ask, but if she finds the front and rolls, she’ll take some running down.
Race 4. (17:55) MJ Defrancesch Handicap (1MW) 1000m
Remaining at 1000m is a little bit of a concern but I think 5 Lofty Lad (Bet Now: $5.50) is the best horse in the race. Lindsey Smith trains this gelding, who resumed down the straight at Pinjarra where the market said he’d need the run and that’s how it panned out in the straight. Very one paced late and just grinded away when fourth to She’s Vital. Wants further, just hoping they go hard in front.
6 Guns Of Navarone (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Neville Parnham trained gelding who resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since August 25 at Belmont where he was on speed all the way and just felt the pinch late when beaten two lengths by Khan, a race which has produced three winners. He trialled really well last week at Belmont and can sprint well fresh, so he’s a definite contender.
1 Night Voyage (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Martin Allan trained gelding who was unwanted in betting when resuming down the straight at Pinjarra three weeks ago where he got slightly held up around 400m out but eventually got clear and worked to the line pretty well I thought behind Captain Stirling, beaten three lengths and far from disgraced. He is a second up winner…better suited at Belmont? Have to wait and see.
Race 5. (18:25) Pikey Pilgrimage Trophy (70+) 1000m
Confident that 7 Captain Stirling (Bet Now: $1.85) can measure up. Roy Rogers is a talented gelding who is 2/2 this time in, bolting up fresh over 930m at Narrogin before going to Pinjarra down the straight and he bolted up again. Toughest test to date here, but draws well, should land in front again and down in the weights, he gets a great chance to win in town IMO.
Taking a chance on 3 Epic Grey (Bet Now: $12.00) first up. Lindsey Smith trains this four year old gelding, who had three runs in the Winter and for the most part, he was quite disappointing. If you go back to this time last year, he was one of the better three year olds in WA. The trial behind Special Delivery was good and that horse came out and won last week, so that reads well for this. Happy to include him.
1 Candlelight Star (Bet Now: $14.00) is an Adam Durrant trained veteran that probably isn’t going as well as he was a few runs back. He ran down the Pinjarra straight three weeks ago where he got well back in the run and worked home well enough without really threatening behind Dam Ready in what looked a pretty decent sprint race. Back on a bending track, he can bounce back.
Race 6. (18:55) Fearless Fred Castledine Handicap (1MW) 1600m
It is just about D-Day for 6 Truly Belong (Bet Now: $3.50). Ran over 1500m at Pinjarra three weeks ago where she got well back in the run and savaged the line late to run a close up third to Fair Sonari. Looks to be crying out for further, which she gets it here. Ideal scenario would be three wide cover and get clear air at the top of the straight. If that happens, I think she’ll win.
1 Golgotha (Bet Now: $11.00) is a David Harrison trained gelding who had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1400m here last Wednesday where he got back to near last in the run and was badly held up early in the straight. When he got clear, he savaged the line and should have won when a narrow third to Adrian Makfi. Really good second up record. Just needs clear air.
13 Send My Love (Bet Now: $6.50) is an Alan Matthews trained mare who is fourth up leading into this so she should just about be ready to show her best. Ran over 1690m at Bunbury last time where she got back in the run and had to come right around the field in a very good effort when second to Time To Hunt. 0/4 at Ascot, but she seems to be a mare who is working up to something positive.
Race 7. (19:25) Scenic Blast Stakes 1200m
She’s a beauty is 3 Misty Metal (Bet Now: $1.95) and it’s just so hard to go past her. She ran in the Miss Andretti a fortnight ago where she landed on speed trailing the speedy Belter before putting him away and he was there to be beaten but she found plenty late when challenged to win again. Just has to stretch that brilliance to 1200m and is creeping up in the weights, but is just so reliable.
2 Rebel King (Bet Now: $21.00) could be a sharp improver. He was set a near impossible task first up, resuming in the Winterbottom behind Voodoo Lad. Rightfully was never in the hunt. He then had a few weeks off and ran in the Summer Scorcher behind Misty Metal where he was near the speed and battled away well. He could land on speed here and that does seem to be when he races best.
4 Profit Street (Bet Now: $21.00) will be giving them a start but if he’s within range on the turn, he’s certainly good enough to beat these. He ran in the Miss Andretti last time where he got back, as is the norm, but the on speed runners ie Misty Metal dominated and was too sharp. Fast run 1200m looks ideal for him. Just needs to get within them on the turn. He can win for sure.
Race 8. (20:00) Furphy Handicap (66+) 1800m
Confident that 13 Western King (Bet Now: $4.60) can go on with it. Was really keen on him when he raced over 1500m here a fortnight ago and aided by such a sweet steer from Pike, he gathered really good momentum late and he proved too good. I think he’s getting better with each run and now fourth up, he should be hard fit and I think he can repeat the dose.
6 Time To Hunt (Bet Now: $4.20) is a son of Henrythenavigator who is in career best form at the moment. This bloke has won his last three in impressive fashion, the latest seeing him get the job done over 1690m at Bunbury on January 13 after getting the 1/1 sit and pouncing at the right time. Off that run, the 1800m should be okay and he deserves a crack at Saturday grade.
11 Crystal Valley (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Colin Webster trained mare who looks well suited back to 1800m. Jordan Turner gave the mare an absolute peach of a ride when winning here a fortnight back over 2100m, getting the perfect drag up before angling wider on the turn and finishing best to win narrowly. I like her back in trip, because she does seem more explosive at trips below 2000m.
