An eight race program has been assembled for Sandown Hillside on Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:20) Ladbrokes Switch Handicap 1600m
The safe option looks to be 2 Dragon Time (Bet Now:Β $2.10). On the quick back up for Frank Stockdale after racing last Wednesday over 1400m here when taken back from the wide gate and in an on pace dominated affair, he worked home strongly to run a close up third. Form around him suggests a maiden win isn’t far off and up to the mile from the good draw, looks the one to beat.
3 Yulong Premier (Bet Now:Β $3.80) looks to have some ability for Team Hawkes. Comes through a 1400m maiden at Benalla which was won by Need New Friends, who ran well at the Valley on Saturday, so there is some substance to the form. Interesting he steps up to the mile and with Williams on, can see him controlling from the front and proving hard to run down.
For wider exotics I could entertain 4 Forliah (Bet Now:Β $5.00), a staying mare for the Maher/Eustace camp that resumes. Had a few chances to break the duck over a staying trip when last in work but couldn’t quite get the win. For the most part, wasn’t far off. Recent jumpout suggests she’ll need a run or two, but does no work from the gate and has the claim.
Race 2. (15:55) IVE > Print Handicap 1300m
Very interested in 5 Ord (Bet Now:Β $3.70) for the Hayes/Dabernig team and noteworthy that the stable finds Nash to steer. Has placed in both career starts, the latest being at Geelong when second to Ocean Beyond, who of course came out and won the McKenzie on Saturday, so he has the right form around him. Think if he’s to win, needs to be ridden positively because he doesn’t appear to have gears.
Back to 1300m looks a query with 11 Fan Club (Bet Now:Β $5.00), but think she does have a maiden win coming. Whether this is a prep run for something further, not sure, but she has been quite good in two career outings, placing each time. Latest of those runs was at Pakenham when third to Hasseltoff, who placed here last Wednesday. Blinkers on first time might sharpen her up and offset the drop back in trip.
Not sure 8 Ain’t She Cute (Bet Now:Β $7.50) wins, but maps to get an ideal sit just off the speed and can fill a first four spot. Ran over 1200m at Mornington when given a peach steer in the run by Maskiell and was there to win. Just didn’t finish it off and had to settle for a close up second. Needs to improve to win but does get Williams riding.
Race 3. (16:30) Clanbrooke Racing Hcp 1000m
Fraught with danger making a 2YO first starter a good thing, but I do feel 7 Vandoula Lass (Bet Now:Β $1.75) is that. Team Hawkes trained filly having start one here and she has looked very sharp in a couple of Flemington jumpouts. Won the first one before jumping out again at Flemington when wide throughout but under an absolute hold when third to Translation, and on looks, Vandoula Lass looked to be going much better and a few strides after the line, she was a length in front. Really keen on her.
Can’t totally dismiss a Godolphin first starter, so giving respect to 6 Translation (Bet Now:Β $4.20). Purely off the jumpout, even though Translation won, I do think that Vandoula Lass had plenty more in reserve, so off that, can’t see Translation winning, but has gate one, Olly aboard and the Frosted progeny have had a very promising start to the season.
5 Scream Queen (Bet Now:Β $18.00) is a daughter of Holler for Kevin Corstens that is on debut. On breeding, she might need a bit more time, but liked her recent jumpout and the small field does help her cause. Highly doubt she wins, but a third/fourth spot is within range for her for a stable that is going well at the moment.
Race 4. (17:05) Thoroughbred Club Handicap (64) 1000m
Hoping it is handle bars down from the outset with 1 Carlingford (Bet Now:Β $10.00). He’s been an absolute beauty for Mick Sell for a number of seasons now. Toughed it out strongly to win two back on Kyneton Cup Day before going to the Valley when on speed and fighting on well, but clearly no match for a potential Stakes class horse in Vowmaster. That form looks to be A1 for this kind of race.
6 Rutherford (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is the very interesting runner. Griffiths/De Kock trained gelding that was backed with real confidence when resuming at Geelong and aided by a lovely ground saving steer from Max Allen, the four year old got the splits at the right time and dashed clear late for an impressive. Has gate one to use and more upside than most.
9 Mr Brown Fox (Bet Now:Β $15.00) has run well in town before and do like the fact the stable finds Williams to steer. I’d be forgiving of his last start effort at Albury. Visually, disappointing, but the winner Major Time is like a greyhound. Once he finds the front and rail, over a short course trip, he’s very hard to get past. Think he finds a winnable metro race here.
Race 5. (17:40) The Big Screen Company Handicap (64) 1400m
With the class of the field, which is clearly 1 Chequerboard (Bet Now:Β $3.60). Led and felt the pinch late at Bendigo fresh when third to stablemate Hindaam before bumping into that same filly again, this time in in the Twilight Glow when far from disgraced. Think she can lead these for fun and gets in really after the claim for Cartwright.
3 Mona Dream (Bet Now:Β $3.90) looks to have her share of talent. Archie Alexander trained filly that was kept very safe in betting when debuting over 1200m at Ballarat, her home track. Tracked up beautifully behind the speed before angling into clear air and loved the way she finished her race off, winning well and running solid time. Form out of that has been good with a couple of winners and think up to 1400m is ideal.
I’m interested in 4 Surfacing (Bet Now:Β $10.00) for Matt Laurie. They went out really quick on debut at Dunkeld, which suited this girl, who sat back off the fast speed before peeling out and under Campbell Rawiller, she drew right away late and was impressive. They came home in very slow time, so that’s the knock, but has gate one and gets Williams to steer.
Race 6. (18:15) Tile Importer Handicap (64) 1300m
Think this is the right for 3 Ameliaranne (Bet Now:Β $6.50) to find some positive form again. Was good late two back at Pakenham behind Designer Chef before going to Ballarat where she went to a Mares 78, a throw at the stumps, and she was outclassed behind Snapdancer. Drops to a somewhat moderate 64 and gets Olly steering, so she has a bit going for her.
Big watch on 7 Hendrika (Bet Now:Β $8.00), resuming for Matt Cumani. This girl had a three run prep in the Spring/Summer of last year to start her career, winning impressively on debut before placing at Geelong, then found a bog track at Pakenham and was spelled soon after. Can’t find a recent jumpout, so a bit of guessing involved, but she looks to have a bit of quality about her from what we have seen and gets Jamie Kah.
12 Win Fall (Bet Now:Β $13.00) can bounce back here for Henry Dwyer. Resumed at Pakenham over 1200m where she got a mile back in the run and was never a factor behind the in form King Magnus, who won here last Wednesday, so the form does appear to read well for a race like this, she maps to sit much closer in the run and form from last prep is good.
Race 7. (18:45) Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap (64) 1800m
4 Redwood Rising (Bet Now:Β $3.40) looks like he wants 2000m+, but he has got more upside than most. Busuttin/Young trained gelding that was one of the first off the bit at Moe last time out over the mile and the only that got him to the line first was his ability. The rise to 1800m looks ideal, though 2000m+ I feel is when he’ll come into his own. The claim certainly helps.
If 13 Collectable (Bet Now:Β $4.20) brings her effort from last start, she wins. Problem being she has only won the two from 26 and had a $101 SP in that last start, which was the Inglis Bracelet on Oaks Day when closing off strongly behind Rocha Clock. Re Edit, the runner up, won last Saturday, but Rocha Clock was dismal, so the form is patchy, but she drops to a thin 64 and gets Olly.
6 Tarn’s Prince (Bet Now:Β $5.00) looks suited up to 1800m for the Matt Cumnani team. Resumed over the mile at Pakenham where he was a bit one paced when asked for the effort by Will Price but stayed on and was more than sound in defeat when third. He’ll take good improvement from that run and gets Jamie Kah to steer.
Race 8. (19:15) Ladbrokes Handicap (70) 1400m
Look a perfect set up for Nash to take total control from the front aboard 5 Kuzco Lad (Bet Now:Β $3.70) and prove too good. Teo Nugent tried to do that at Mornington last time out but the 1500m just found him out late when second to Unfair Dismissal. Back to 1400m and on a track that suits on speed runners, think he is the way to go in the get out.
4 King Magnus (Bet Now:Β $4.60) is flying for the Griffiths/De Kock team and should prove hard to beat. Ran over 1300m here last Wednesday when getting the dream sit behind the speed before getting a split at the top of the straight and dashing clear late for an impressive. Harder this time around, but hard to knock the way he is going.
8 Sacharro (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is one of the more interesting runners on the program. Talented animal for Archie Alexander that has clearly had his issues given he hasn’t raced since June 2019 at Flemington. Was beaten six lengths in the 2018 Caulfield Guineas, so we know he has quality when at his best. Market will tell you if he’s ready.
