A cracking card of racing has been assembled for Caulfield on Saturday where some of the best Australia has to offer will be out on display. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:20) Pegasus Leisure Group Plate (84) 1600m
1 Hell Or Highwater (Bet Now: $4.80) is a very good and tough mare for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Takes on some nice types here but she’s hard fit and in winning form after fighting them off to win over the Flemington mile last time out, aided by a peach from star apprentice Ben Thompson. Maps well here, should be at peak fitness and looks hard to beat.
8 Sea The Sparkle (Bet Now: $4.20) came with a lovely turn of foot nearer the inside to win fresh at Sandown before going to Flemington where she looked to have the second up syndrome and was quite flat to the eye behind Dulverton, who ran well next start. Prepared to give her a look here third up.
3 Domino Vitale (Bet Now: $9.50) on top. Colin Little trained mare who hadn’t done a great deal in her first two runs back from a break but there was market support for her last time out at Flemington and it was somewhat justified with a nice effort against the tempo behind Hell Or Highwater, running third. Getting fitter now and back to the mile on her home track looks ideal.
Race 2. (12:55) Legacy 2017 Badge Appeal Handicap 1100m
6 Written Era (Bet Now: $4.80) on top but only just. High quality mare for the Purcell team that was well backed when resuming on a bog at sandown and despite not really being happy in the conditions she was far too classy for them. Better than that and is well and truly up to these as we saw in the Autumn. Should get the dream sit off Sullivan Bay and Petite’s Reward.
5 Oregon’s Day (Bet Now: $3.50) could well be a future Group l winner. Mick Price trained mare who really came of age in the Autumn, winning the Alexandra in such impressive fashion before a luckless seventh in the Coolmore Legacy to Foxplay. Outstanding jump outs and looks ready to go fresh.
3 Sullivan Bay (Bet Now: $8.50) is the hard fit/in form mare for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This mare has been in work for some time now but continues to race really well. 1200m just saw her out here three weeks back behind Every Faith to so 1100m and a soft lead should help her claims.
Race 3. (13:30) Beveridge Williams Plate (78) 1100m
13 Fursa (Bet Now: $6.00) is a huge watch here. Former Mike De Kock runner now with Darren Weir. She has some really good form next to her name when racing in South Africa, including a Group l placing. Haven’t seen her at the jump outs/trials, so she is an unknown, but on her form, she’s a big player.
This is a high quality 78. Leaning the way of 2 Theanswermyfriend (Bet Now: $8.00). He was outstanding during the Autumn, running some very good races in Melbourne before going to the Carbine Club at Randwick where he ran second to Acatour. Jump outs have been good, he goes well fresh and does have that touch of brilliance about him.
5 Danuki (Bet Now: $17.00) comes through the race won by Saint Valorem here three weeks ago. He was a total forgive for mine. He led at a fast tempo into that stiff headwind before dropping out to run a bad last, and then he didn’t pull up 100% afterwards. Jump outs leading in were too good to sack off one forgive run.
Race 4. (14:05) Ramleigh Springs On Clyde Handicap 1600m
Going each way here with 7 Onpicalo (Bet Now: $9.00). He is a tough nut for Mick Price who always tries hard and is never far away from the action. He is five weeks between runs since racing over the 1700m here where he ran a gutsy fourth to Portion Control in a race where the form has been quite good. Lacks the class of some of these, but he maps superbly and with only 52.5kg, he’ll take some catching.
1 Big Duke (Bet Now: $5.50) is a high class import for Darren Weir and Australian Bloodstock that should take a power of beating here despite the mile being short of his best. His Summer/Autumn prep was fabulous, ending it with a narrow miss in the Sydney Cup. Whatever he does here, he will improve on, but class carries him a long way here I think.
5 Foundry (Bet Now: $8.50) is such an interesting runner for mine. Team Williams galloper that has blacktype ability, but has been plagued by injuries. On his day, he is a high class animal who is better than these, and while there are so many unknowns, I think we have seen enough from other resuming stablemates in recent weeks to take the gamble he’ll be fit enough to run well.
Race 5. (14:40) Winslow Group Quezette Stakes 1100m
The chance of a wet track brings a filly like 9 Brook Magic (Bet Now: $11.00) right into play. She hasn’t raced since July 8 at warwick Farm where she led all the way bar the last stride when nabbed by Manicure. Trialled brilliantly last week at Randwick, thrives on wet tracks and looks the leader.
Have to side with 1 Catchy (Bet Now: $2.15). One of the best three year olds in Victoria who resumes here for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This filly was such an impressive winner of the Blue Diamond before starting near favourite for the Slipper when really struggling on the wet track behind She Will Reign. Trial last week was brilliant and she’s the one to beat here.
4 Undoubtable Miss (Bet Now: $18.00) is a smart Not A Single Doubt filly first up for Robbie Griffiths. This girl ran really well three times during the Autumn, winning a blacktype event at Morphettville at start three in a race which looked to have really good depth to it. From what I’ve seen, she looked slick in a recent jump out and is forward enough.
Race 6. (15:20) KS Environmental Vain Stakes 1100m
4 Jukebox (Bet Now: $3.30) just wins I think. Really keen to see what this boy can do in the Spring. He was very dominant in two wins prior to the Blue Diamond, where he was tipped by everyone and was crunched in betting but was scratched due to injury and the campaign was done then. Looked great at the jump outs and he’s the one for mine.
Good to see 8 Cliff’s Edge (Bet Now: $5.50) back at the races. He was very good in the early part of the Winter for the Weir camp in two runs, winning at start two at Sandown in a high rating race and the form was franked via Lone Eagle. Liked what I have seen at the jump outs and he looks ready to go.
1 Aspect (Bet Now: $36.00) is an above average Pluck gelding for Tony McEvoy that is first up here. Nothing really went right during the Autumn, though he did run game second to Sircconi in the VRC Sires. Trialled up okay behind Formality at Cranbourne last week but we know this stable should be respected with their young guns.
Race 7. (16:00) Charge Of The Light Horse PB Lawrence Stakes 1400m
3 Black Heart Bart (Bet Now: $2.80) is the peoples champ in Victoria. He is just an absolute beauty for Darren Weir but for mine, the jury is out on him after a two run Winter campaign which didn’t exactly go to plan. Thought he was just average in the Goodwood and then, like most, he really struggled on the Eagle Farm surface in the Kingsford Smith Cup. He has a love affair with the Caulfield 1400m and does go well fresh. He’s a danger, but in terms of a betting prospect, I think he is a risk at the price because there are unknowns.
2 Hartnell (Bet Now: $3.20) is the obvious. Probably sits third behind Winx and Chatauqua as the best in Australia and is being set for a Melbourne prep to avoid the great mare. His efforts in Melbourne have been outstanding, and does save his best for here. Jump out last week, from what I saw late, was very good. Class gets him very close to winning.
Great to see 7 Star Exhibit (Bet Now: $10.00) back at the races. The Perth Cup winner was fabulous in two runs for the Weir camp in the Winter. Brilliant winner of the Anniversary Vase at this track/distance before going to the Doomben Cup where he looked all over a winner but he didn’t handle the wet track when a gutsy second to Sense Of Occasion. Looks the big watch here against the two proven stars.
Race 8. (16:40) Listed Regal Roller Stakes 1200m
11 Brave Smash (Bet Now: $3.80) is such an interesting runner for mine. Former Japanese galloper now with the Darren Weir. His last start over there was in a 1200m Group lll race where he had a perfect sit off the pace, loomed large to win but just couldn’t finish it off when a narrow fourth to Melagrana, who has since failed in a Group l and Group ll. You always have to be wary of the Japanese.
The one for me that is overs is 7 Santa Ana Lane (Bet Now: $7.50). He is a quality sprinter that resumes for Team Freedman after a very good Summer/Autumn campaign, which included an unlucky run in the Goodwood, a race that Supido ran so well in last year. Recent Flemington jump out was outstanding and he appears to have come back in super order.
1 Vega Magic (Bet Now: $4.50) is a high class sprinter kicking off a possible Everest prep for the Hayes/Dabernig yard. He only had the one run for the stable last prep and it was a beauty, getting the Group l win in the Goodwood aided by a pearler from Craig Williams. He has looked great at the jump outs, and while there is clearly bigger fish to fry, he looks ready to go fresh.
Race 9. (17:15) Thebigscreencompany.com.au Plate (84) 1400m
6 Divine Mr Artie (Bet Now: $4.80) is nearing a win so I’ll lean his way. He ran over 1400m at Flemington a fortnight back and did a ripping job in defeat. Had to come wide from the back and launched late but Nozomi, who got the breaks inside, nabbed him. Swap the runs, swap the result. He can sit closer here and is the one to beat.
12 Tiamo Grace (Bet Now: $10.00) is a classy filly that resumes for Darren Weir. This filly was touted as a contender for the Crown Oaks after a dominant win in the Wakeful, but the stable kept her on ice and now she’s over several niggling injuries. From all reports, she worked well on the weekend and is forward enough to go well fresh.
13 Majestic Duke (Bet Now: $19.00) is the knockout hope at huge odds. Ran over the Flemington 1400m weeks back and I thought he did a really good job in defeat under Chelsea Hall. Set up the speed, ran along at a decent clip and was only beaten off the final furlong. Getting fitter, looks the leader and will give a bold sight at good odds.
