SA metro racing this Saturday heads to Gawler where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres from the 900m-500m; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:06) Tab Mdn Plate 1100m
9 Daily Spirit (Bet Now: $1.80) looks the one to beat in the opener. Macdonald/Gluyas trained filly that resumed two weeks ago at Morphettville when near the speed throughout and battling away well, but clearly no match for Zoushine, who had a fair bit on them. Has the run under the belt which should hold her in good stead.
5 Outlaws Revenge (Bet Now: $3.60) has less convictions than most when it comes to the raced brigade. Debuted in the Zoushine race mentioned above where he was off the speed and chasing from a fair way out but kept finding the line and was good in defeat in running third. That form looks A1 for this, so has to be respected.
1 Back To Front (Bet Now: $10.00) is an interesting runner. Son of Smart Missile that debuts for Nikki Pollock. He trialled on the Parks track a couple of weeks ago and under riding, thought he went well, closing off nicely to run second to The Waterman. Has showed good ability at the trials and a win with him here wouldn’t entirely shock.
Race 2. (13:41) Sth Aust. B'makers League-bm64 1705m
Tricky race this. On top is 7 Aussie Sojourn (Bet Now: $4.50). Not sure she beat much last Wednesday at Balaklava, but the manner in which she put them away from off the speed, and the turn of foot she produced, was really impressive. Hopefully gate one is used to advantage and think the extra 100m should be no drama.
4 Going Gaga (Bet Now: $5.00) should be suited up to 1700m for Grant Kluske. This gelding ran over the mile at Morphettville a fortnight ago where he was back off the speed and worked home strongly late when second to Territory Titan, beaten two lengths, but the run had merit to it. Like him up in trip and is hard to beat.
1 Mr Epic (Bet Now: $5.50) gets the Blinkers back on and I reckon that could spark improvement from this gelding. He ran last Wednesday at Balaklava when near the speed throughout but was one of the first placed under pressure and just whacked away behind Diamond Tycoon. His best is good enough and think the Blinkers will help.
Race 3. (14:16) Holdfast Insurance (bm68) 1200m
2 Taken Off (Bet Now: $3.00) looks the pony to bet on. Phillip Stokes trained gelding that resumed over 1100m at Morphettville two weeks ago. Thought Crowther rode the ideal race on him and at the top of the straight looked like he was going to go through the gears and win. But Just Chipping Away had other ideas and in hindsight, it found the best part of the track and careered away. Taken Off has upside to come and finds a very winnable race.
4 Tullys Gold (Bet Now: $2.70) is racing in really good form this prep for Ryan Balfour. Three weeks between runs since racing at Morphettville when near the speed throughout and fighting hard to cling on and win. Just found one too good on the day in Aten. Draws wide, but has the early pace to overcome that and prove hard to beat.
8 Maid In Milan (Bet Now: $12.00) can add value to multiples. Kristi Evans trained mare that is three weeks between runs since racing at Morphettville where she had to do work from a wide gate to get near the speed and that early burn just told on her late, finishing down the track behind Aten. She’s better than that and deserves another chance.
Race 4. (14:51) Bronwen Darrall Memorial (c1) 1200m
1 Harpuna (Bet Now: $2.35) is in trouble if he can’t put this lot away. Just looks a perfect race for him. Odds on when he raced at Morphettville two weeks ago and on face value, he was pretty ordinary behind Ambidazzle. The run prior at Morphettville suggested a win was nearby. This looks his race and not sure he’ll find an easier race than this.
2 Munster (Bet Now: $2.80) is on the seven day back up for Michael Hickmott after racing last Saturday at Morphettville. Did work to get on speed, then worked again to try and chase down the leader. Did that, but by the time he did, he was out of petrol tickets and was bloused late by Call Me Shamus, who had the sit off the speed. Going well and a win isn’t far off.
8 Mavette (Bet Now: $21.00) is a John Hickmott trained gelding that can add value to multiples. He ran last Wednesday at Balaklava when near the speed throughout and battling away okay but had his chance when fourth to Zume Forward. If he can get luck from the wide gate, think he can fill a first four spot.
Race 5. (15:31) Gj Civil (bm58) 1100m
Tricky gate to overcome but in the corner of 8 Ultimate Victory (Bet Now: $3.10), who is second up here for Peter Blanch. Resumed over 1000m at Murray Bridge in a 54 where he was back near last in the run before Tourneur presented him clear air out wide and I loved the way he put them away to win and win well. Hard to beat here. Just needs to overcome the draw.
3 The Raven (Bet Now: $4.00) is racing in just about career best form for Kristi Evens. Put together a couple of wins on the bounce, including a win in town. Ran a couple of weeks back at Penola and battled away strongly when third to Rhythmatic, who won again last weekend to tick the form. Claim helps and maps well.
12 Rushwa (Bet Now: $11.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but he’s honest and usually not far away, which was the case at Morphettville two weeks ago in a fast run race. Run off his legs early but picked up and was good late when third to Kirinia. If he can settle a pair or two closer in the run, think he’ll be dangerous.
Race 6. (16:11) Dave Binyon Memorial (bm68) 2105m
2500m back to 2100m is the query with 3 Galahad Guru (Bet Now: $3.10) but do feel he has the right form to take this out. Ran over the longer staying trip three weeks ago at Morphettville and although he ran fourth, no doubt in my mind that with a clear path in the straight, he wins the race instead of being beaten 2.3L by Charossa. Looks well placed back in this grade. Hopefully the rub of the green goes his way.
2 Allusion (Bet Now: $2.80) is racing in good form for the McEvoy camp. He just can’t win one. Made up ground and tried hard last time out on the Parks track but had to settle for a close up second to Confusion. Racing well and is honest…just doesn’t win, so a leading chance here, but backing him to win is another thing.
7 The Red Sea (Bet Now: $7.50) lacks the class of some of these, but is hard fit, racing well and will carry a very lightweight after the claim. He is a horse who doesn’t appear to have a turn of foot so think his best chance of winning will be to lead and roll, which is what he did three back at Balaklava and was able to win by over five lengths.
Race 7. (16:51) Cornerstone Stud (bm64) 1200m
7 Magic Dee (Bet Now: $6.50) is bursting to win another race for Shane Oxlade. Looked like it would come when she raced at this track/distance last time out, working home strongly from off the speed. Just couldn’t quite get there when second to Love Magic. Don’t think she has to improve too much to prove hard to beat here.
Like 10 Sand Cat (Bet Now: $11.00) as a threat. Emma Hubbard trains this mare, who attempted to lead throughout last Wednesday at Balaklava. Claudia Lions got control on her in front and she did try really hard. Just couldn’t quite fend off Zume Forward, but they gapped the rest. Likes racing at Gawler and has the right racing pattern.
The best version of 2 Galcrum (Bet Now: $14.00) is capable. This mare comes through a race at this track/distance won by Love Magic. Was wide no cover throughout but battled away well to run third after the tough run. Tends to save her best for Gawler and with better luck this time around, a win wouldn’t totally shock.
Race 8. (17:31) Adel. Plains Bloodstock (bm58) 1500m
Fitter and up to 1500m I do like for the Will Clarken trained mare 9 Nakheel (Bet Now: $3.00). This mare resumed over 1400m at Murray Bridge where she was kept very safe in betting. Sat on speed and tried hard, but her condition just gave out late when third. She’ll take good improvement from that and is a leading contender.
8 Sylvan Crest (Bet Now: $3.80) is racing in a real purple patch at the moment for the Francis/Kent team. The veteran has won his past two, leading throughout and bolting up two back at Strathalbyn before going to this track/distance where he sat back off the speed but was still just as effective and was too good. Leading contender here.
4 Igitur (Bet Now: $8.50) can add value to multiples. Emma Hubbard trained gelding that ran over the mile at Balaklava last Wednesday where he kicked up to hold the lead and gave a solid enough kick under Claudia Lions. Just couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a third to Diamond Tycoon. Lands near the front here and will run an honest race.
Race 9. (18:11) Coopers Brewery (bm82) 1100m
5 Tequila Time (Bet Now: $5.50) isn’t racing too bad at the moment for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable. Another that comes through the City Of Marion where the furious tempo probably wasn’t to his liking, but he was still far from disgraced in defeat. If he can settle closer in the run and the tempo isn’t as hot, he can take this out.
8 Port Vale (Bet Now: $12.00) can win again for Stuart Gower. Big Effort was taking Port Vale out every stride two weeks ago at Morphettville, so if Port Vale didn’t win it on the track, he would have won in the Stewards Room. Mattered not because Port Vale was too good on the track. Racing in a real purple patch and is hard to beat here.
6 Big Effort (Bet Now: $7.50) is the one with upside. He was resuming at Morphettville and did plenty wrong under pressure in the straight. He fought on gamely to run second to the hard fit and in form Port Vale. His second up record isn’t as flash, but feel he’s got upside to come, should land near the speed and prove hard to run down.
