The Ascot Carnival continues this Saturday where it is Ted Van Heemst Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Ted Van Heemst Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Ted Van Heemst Stakes
Race 1. (15:07) TABTOUCH-W'SPEED PLATINUM MDN 1000m
The market will be the main guide but if it likes 7 Wilchino (Bet Now: $1.90) then I’ll be more than happy to be on. Dan Morton trains this mare, who has had two career starts. Debuted March 2019 here when fourth to Divide The Sea before racing in September 2019 in a Northam and placing behind Drinkwhatyoulike. Has clearly had her issues, but looks to have trialled up really well.
5 Universal Pleasure (Bet Now: $3.50) resumes and I think can be dangerous, especially from the inside gate with the claim. Hasn’t raced since July 30 when a closing third at Northam after being slightly slow away. Two trials to get ready have been encouraging and if the gate is used to advantage, think she’s hard to beat.
Big watch here on 3 Midnight Hour (Bet Now: $10.00), resuming for Jason Pateman. He hasn’t been seen since September 2019 when on speed in a Class One and tiring late in a disappointing effort. Thought the recent trial was good and with this stable, any hint of market support should be respected. Market and yard will be the guide.
Race 2. (15:47) BYRON BAY PREMIUM LAGER PLATE 1100m
I’m with 1 Ultimate Command (Bet Now: $3.40) for Neville Parnham. Very professional debut win from her two weeks ago here, leading throughout, doing everything right and finding plenty under pressure to score. The field here doesn’t appear to be overly strong so think she finds the front again, gets control and will prove hard to run down once again.
7 Sneaky Chance (Bet Now: $23.00) is an I’m All The Talk filly for Trevor Andrews that debuts. She has had two trials to get ready for start one, starting with a 400m trial win before placing over 1000m in her second trial, that one coming last week. Looks to have gone about her business quite nicely and is one to watch from a market perspective.
5 Pixie Chix (Bet Now: $17.00) is a well bred filly for David Harrison that can run a much improved race here at odds. Debuted in the Ultimate Command race from two weeks ago and I’d be very forgiving of that. Was wide no cover throughout and just couldn’t come on behind the Parnham filly. Trialled well prior, so she deserves another chance.
Race 3. (16:27) SCHWEPPES PLATE 1000m
Sustained speed from the front will win you more races than lose, especially at Ascot, and 1 Madam Torio (Bet Now: $1.65) showcased that in spades when resuming with a dominant win here three weeks ago, leading throughout and she gave them a spanking in good time as well. Creeping up in the weights, but don’t think that will be stopping her.
3 Keep Your Feet (Bet Now: $4.50) is a quality three year old for Simon Miller that resumes. Hasn’t raced since August 15 at Belmont when trying quite hard but was clearly no match for Clairvoyance in a good effort in a fast race. Not sure what to make of the trial, and draws tricky, but has the form on the board and gets Pike.
4 Precautionary (Bet Now: $8.00) was heading down a potential WA Guineas path but she failed badly in the Burgess Queen on Cup Day and since dropped back to a Class One where she led and gave a decent enough kick. Just felt the pinch late, so I think fresh legs back to 1000m I like. Can stalk the favourite and get last look.
Race 4. (17:07) AMELIA PARK (RS1MW) 1600m
Keen here on 1 Aberdeen Queen (Bet Now: $7.00) for the Lindsey Smith team. This mare ran over 1500m at Pinjarra last time out in the Grandstand Cup where she just got too far back in the run but loved the way she closed off and actually produced the best late splits of the race. If she can sit closer in the run, think she’ll take a power of beating.
1200m straight to the mile second up is an ask for 3 Dark Mission (Bet Now: $3.90) but she was a strong first up winner two weeks ago. Given a lovely ride from Pike off the speed, she got clear at the right time and surged hard late to nab them on the peg. Harder here and creeping up in the weights but has more upside than most.
2 Baby Blues (Bet Now: $31.00) is the interesting runner. Had some specking at a price when she resumed in the Dark Mission race mentioned above. Was last throughout and clearly something wasn’t right with Harvey being kind to her late. She’s better than that and gets to a more suitable trip. Could run a much improved race.
Race 5. (17:47) TED VAN HEEMST STAKES 2100m
Can 1 Trap For Fools (Bet Now: $4.20) repeat his effort from last start? If he does, think he’s in the mix for sure. That last start effort came last Saturday in the Towton Cup where he led throughout and he gave his rivals, a somewhat moderate bunch of rivals, a proper spanking. Third run in as many weeks for him, but now he has a win on the board, could well go on with it.
2 Truly Great (Bet Now: $1.40) was a dominant winner of the Kingston Town and the ride from Chris Parnham was a peach. Put him into a lovely trailing spot and got going on the turn to build the revs and make those behind chase. It was the winning move and for a while he has always looked a Perth Cup horse. Can confirm that here.
8 Paddy’s Shadow (Bet Now: $19.00) is on track I feel towards the Perth Cup. Just found Midnight Blue too good two back, then bumped into another Peters horse, this time Royal Command, who was far too good for his rivals in the Tatts Cup. Paddy’s Shadow stuck on and was good in defeat. Think she runs well again.
Race 6. (18:25) CROWN SPORTS BAR (BM66+) 2200m
In the corner of 5 British Bessy (Bet Now: $11.00). Sharon Miller trains this mare, who is racing well and is nearing a win I feel. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago in a race where Pike really pulled their pants down aboard Adornment and won the race. British Bessy was back and made up good ground late in the piece. If she can sit closer in the run, think she’ll be dangerous.
3 Adornment (Bet Now: $8.50) has to be respected. This mare was threatening to win one for some time, but it took some Pike magic to get her home, which is what she did at this track/distance a fortnight ago. Took off midrace to find the front and he pinched it aboard the mare. Now she has a win on the board, she could well go on with it.
10 Sentimental Queen (Bet Now: $16.00) has too low of a rating I think to get into a Perth Cup but I reckon the new connections will have fun with her and she could sneak a country cup or two over time. Hayden Ballantye trains this former Peters horse and she was dominant in winning last time out over 2000m at Pinjarra, proving very strong to the line in winning. Hard to beat here.
Race 7. (19:00) STARSTRUCK CLASSIC 1600m
3 Chantrea (Bet Now: $2.70) looks the good thing on the program. Lindsey Smith trained mare that resumed in the Jungle Dawn over 1400m where the market didn’t like her late, being a notable drifter, but loved the way she worked home along the fence when third to She’s Alright. Fitter, up to the mile, more upside than most…only bad luck beats her.
1 Dance Music (Bet Now: $2.90) is the class runner of the field and that class will carry her a long way towards victory here. Outclassed in the Railway before going to the Scahill where she was good late when third to Kementari after getting a fair way back in the run. Hopefully she can get a positive steer from the good draw and and she’ll go very close I think.
5 Lonsdale Lady (Bet Now: $20.00) deserves another chance. Notable drifter late in betting when racing in the Jungle Dawn and while the market got it right, she didn’t really get the rub of the green and should have finished a touch closer. Like her up to the mile and with a more positive steer, think she’s hard to beat here.
Race 8. (19:40) WA BLACK DIAMOND (BM66+) 1200m
1 Miss Frost (Bet Now: $3.70) is a beauty for Luke Fernie and I think she can carry the weight successfully. Is several weeks between runs since getting a blacktype win next to her name via a win in the Jungle Mist where she was able to wear them down from off the speed and finish best. Even allowing for the weight, think she’s very well in against these.
5 Dew West (Bet Now: $4.50) has the Pike factor and I think that has to come into consideration. Hasn’t really established herself as a Saturday class horse as of yet so do find it interesting that Pike is on, but he was on her when she got the job done at Bunbury last time out in impressive fashion. Has to be respected.
2 Cryptic Love (Bet Now: $17.00) is a leading contender here I feel. Needed the run fresh behind subsequent Winterbottom winner Elite Street. Then went to the Jungle Mist and was luckless, pretty much going around like it was a barrier trial when running 7/12 behind Miss Frost. Off that Jungle Mist effort, think she’s hard to beat here and gets Paul Harvey to steer.
Race 9. (20:15) PIKESAYSTHANKSWA (BM72+) 1400m
6 Bad Wolf (Bet Now: $26.00) is knocking on the door to win one and I think he can take this out. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago in what looked a slowly run race and that’s exactly how it panned out. He did a good job from where he was to get as close as he did to Lorentinio, who is flying at the moment. Hard to beat here off a more genuine tempo.
It’s hard to ignore the way 4 Lorentinio (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing at the moment. Went very keen in front three weeks back in the race mentioned above. Was entitled to knock up late but he kept finding under pressure and was too good. Should hold up from the gate and Ramoly is seemingly getting on very well with him.
1 Dig Deep (Bet Now: $6.00) is back on track I feel and he can take this out. Looked in need of the run fresh behind In Love With Paris before stepping up to 1400m a few weeks back on testing ground and running a much improved race when second to Position Of Power, then was good again behind Lorentinio. Fourth up now, so should be at peak fitness and rates highly.
