Nine races will be run and won at Rosehill this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is good (3) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:40) ATC Owners Benefit Card Handicap (75) 1200m
4 Easy Eddie (Bet Now: $2.80) on top for me. Joe Pride trained gelding who is putting together a decent little record at the moment. He only beat a field of three last time out at Canterbury, but I did like the way he accelerated when asked and challenged, drawing clear and safely holding them. First up win was a beauty, so I think he can measure up here.
3 Sparky Lad (Bet Now: $4.60) won a subsequent hot form race two back at Warwick Farm where he landed some good bets before racing over 1400m at Randwick where he loomed to win but just lacked the killer punch when third to Goodfella, who came out and won the Brian Crowley so that form around him reads so well.
1 Lippizan (Bet Now: $8.00) is a quality Sebring filly that resumes for the Gary Portelli team. This girl had a pretty solid Winter prep, highlighted by a win over 1200m at Randwick and a placing to the Group l performed Champagne Cuddles. Looked solid enough in an October 24 trial to suggest she’ll run well first up.
Race 2. (13:20) Chandon S Handicap (82) 1400m
She’s a risk at 1400m but with the right run, and probable give in the track, I’ll lean the way of 3 Rosa Carolina (Bet Now: $7.50). She ran over 1300m at Randwick on Cup Day and loomed to win but Star Sensation just packed too many punches, and keep in mind there was a 4kg weight swing. Stakes performed and this looks a good race for her provided she gets the right run.
1 Slow Burn (Bet Now: $4.40) does look the one on form, but she’s creeping a fair way up in the weights now and takes on some nice types here. Still, plenty to like about her win here a fortnight back over 1100m when dominating her rivals, spanking them and running time. Think there are a few negatives about her here, but she’s hard fit and in form.
10 O’Reilly Cyrus (Bet Now: $21.00) comes through the Star Sensation race at Randwick on Cup Day and I thought her effort to run third was very good. Jay Ford elected to stick nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be, yet she still made up good ground late. Hasn’t won for a little while now, but convinced she is going well enough.
Race 3. (13:55) Boohoo.com Handicap (85) 2000m
2 Carzoff (Bet Now: $5.00) looks the way to go. Chris Waller trained gelding who was most unlucky fresh at Doomben behind Time To Torque before quickly stepping up to 1800m here a fortnight back where he had a battle with Lord Kingsley but his toughness probably just shone late. Was three weeks between runs there, so he has upside and up to 2000m a big tick.
6 Lead Choreographer (Bet Now: $4.60) is three weeks between runs for the Waller camp after racing at Randwick over 2000m. Sat near the speed most of the way under Schofield and looked to travel well, hitting the lead upon straightening, but he had no answers for Karavali, who was beaten with excuses last weekend. This horse is hard fit, in form and maps super.
8 Lord Kingsley (Bet Now: $8.50) is the best horse in the race on ability but even after 20 starts, he still has a few loose screws upstairs. Looked the winner in the Carzoff race here on Derby Day but that horse just wanted it a bit more and he got the photo. This horse has now had two hard 1800m runs under the belt so he looks for 2000m.
Race 4. (14:30) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1100m
6 Nobody (Bet Now: $20.00) on top in a tricky Highway. Rod Northam trained gelding who comes through a race at Coonabarabran where he was given a nice enough ride by Greg Ryan in the run and he hit the front upon straightening, looking home, but he couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a close up second. Back to a fast run 1100m looks ideal.
9 Our Dasha (Bet Now: $7.50) is a nippy filly for Derek Piper who will be on speed and running along. Those tactics have worked wonders for her in both runs this prep, bolting up over 800m at Narromine before going to the Muswellbrook 1000m and repeating the dose. Last 150m will test her, but she has the right racing pattern for the 1100m start at Rosehill.
10 Bel Diablo (Bet Now: $10.00) looks the knockout chance. This gelding ran over 1100m at Scone last time out where he attempted to lead all the way and just overdid it I think on speed and tired late when third to Serene Miss. Maps to get a super run just off the pace here and now he has that hard 1100m run under the belt, he should run a good race.
Race 5. (15:05) November Handicap 1400m
7 Firsthand (Bet Now: $4.20) gets the nod for me. Team Hawkes trained galloper who is three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Randwick where he got between runners and was under riding as it looked as if To Excess would win but this horse kept surging and attacked the line best to win in a tight photo. Untried beyond 1200, but off last start, 1400m, especially on his home track, will be no issue.
5 Cabeza De Vaca (Bet Now: $2.30) trialled up very well prior to resuming over 1400m at Randwick three weeks ago and really, he was most impressive in leading all the way under Rachel King. Ran them along at a strong clip, was there to be beaten, but he just kept finding and beat stablemate Supply And Demand, who ran a beauty on Oaks Day and is being touted as a leading contender for the Railway. Maps super and should only improve fitness wise. Just a worry he might be flat off that outstanding return.
8 Gamblestown (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Joe Pride trained galloper who had specking at odds when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back and the little move almost came off. He just lacked the killer finish nearer the inside with the weight and had to settle for third to Wayanka. Hard fit now, and with that run under the belt, he’ll be better off.
Race 6. (15:45) November Topaz 1900m
I think the gun can get the best out of 3 New Tipperary (Bet Now: $6.00) to win here. Liked his effort over the 1800m at this track a fortnight back where he loomed to win but he was just outgunned late by Black On Gold. Avdulla rides the horse better than anyone and yes it has been a while since he has won, but I think he can lift it home.
8 Black On Gold (Bet Now: $5.25) was very good two back behind Interlocuter at Randwick before backing up a week later over 1800m here and aided by a lovely steer from Kathy O’Hara, the horse got the split inside and surged hard the final 50m to get the win. The rain does worry me, but he has shown this prep he can run well on a track with give in it.
4 Prince Cheri (Bet Now: $11.00) is a nine year old whose best years are behind him, but he maintains a healthy zest. First run for the O’Shea camp came in the Craven and I thought he was pretty good behind Classic Uniform before racing in the Black On Gold race here a fortnight ago where he loomed to win from the back but condition jut gave way. Should be hard fit now and rates highly.
Race 7. (16:20) Jaydub Electrical Handicap (80) 1200m
1 Pick Me Up (Bet Now: $6.50) is getting close to his D-Day but I think he can take this out. Luckless first up on Everest Day behind Grand Condor before racing here a fortnight back where he just took a little while to get going but his effort was sound late behind Pomelo. Up to 1200m is the big tick for this horse and being third up, he should be hard fit, ready to go.
6 Best Guess (Bet Now: $2.80) is a gelding who is low flying this time in for the Chris Waller team. Impressive winner two back at Canterbury before racing in the Pomelo race here on Derby Day where he sat near a hot speed and once he presented, he looked a winning hope, but he just didn’t quite finish it off. I think with a more patient ride, 1200m will be no issue.
Watch out for 3 Caerless Choice (Bet Now: $8.50) to run a nice race here fresh. Smart customer for Paul Messara who had a busy opening prep, contesting the Country Championship Final before ending the prep with a fast finishing fourth in the Sunny Coast Guineas. Given a nice quiet trial behind Big Money in fast time, but the quality is there to suggest he will run well.
Race 8. (17:00) #theraces Handicap (80) 1400m
4 Flow (Bet Now: $5.00) on top. James Cummings trained gelding who resumes here off the back of a pretty solid Autumn/Winter prep, which saw him place in the Sunny Coast Guineas, so the quality is there, and to my eye he has really looked sharp in a couple of barrier trials, and indicator he is forward enough to sprint well fresh.
2 Cosmic Engine (Bet Now: $5.00) is a smart Vinery gelding for Chris Waller who resumed a tick over two weeks back at Canterbury where he had the suck run behind the speed under Blake Shinn before getting the split at the top of the straight and finishing best to score a narrow but impressive win. Should only improve off that and rates highly.
8 Balmain Boy (Bet Now: $18.00) is a bludger, but he does interest me here first up. He has run some quality races at a high level in the past, and yes I am talking 18 months ago, but still, he has, so obviously there is talent…just hasn’t shown it enough. But fresh at 1400m with no trials does intrigue me. Definite yard/market watch.
Race 9. (17:40) Boxing Day At Royal Randwick Sprint (96) 1100m
9 Tactical Advantage (Bet Now: $4.00) looks a great bet for mine. Very talented four year old for Joe Pride who resumed over the 1000m at Randwick a few Saturdays back where the market went very cold on him and it was spot on as he got too far back and looked big in condition when third to Fickle Folly. Should come right on from that and rates highly for me.
11 Glenall (Bet Now: $6.00) is the big, big watch here. Former Les Bridge three year old now four with Team Hawkes. Look what he did in his first prep in the Autumn. Only won the one race, but he ran a slashing fourth in the Galaxy and was four lengths off Derryn and Global Glamour in the Arrowfield. Been given two very sharp trials to prepare and no doubt he’s ready to go.
4 Kinshachi (Bet Now: $10.00) is a quality mare for the James Cummings team who resumed in the Nivison four weeks back at Randwick and I liked the way she closed off her race late in the piece when third to White Moss. That form is mixed because Dixie Blossoms ran so well in the Myer, but White Moss flopped on Cup Day. Given a quiet trial last Monday to keep ticking over and she does have an excellent second up record.
