A ripping card of racing has been assembled for Caulfield this Saturday where a crack field is set to take their place in the feature, the PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m). The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:20) Beveridge Williams Handicap (84) 1700m
8 Remember The Name (Bet Now: $4.50) on top. Danny O’Brien trains this mare, who is a few weeks between runs since racing in the Gold Reef at Caulfield where she got a mile off them from the wide gate, made a long searching run yet still kept finding the line to run third. This looks a more suitable assignment and should take some beating.
2 Naantali (Bet Now: $2.60) does look the obvious horse to beat on current form, where she has been electric in her past two starts, both resulting in wins, the latest over the Valley mile two weeks ago. What I will say though about those two wins is that both races were slowly run, where her brilliance came to the fore. If we get a decent tempo here, first crack at 1700m, she could be a slight risk. But still has to be seriously respected.
4 Crafty Devil (Bet Now: $19.00) is the knockout chance to my eye. Darren Weir trains this mare, who has a stack of upside to come. She comes through the Naantali race at the Valley where she still looked to carry condition but despite that worked home well late to run fifth. 2000m+, you’ll see the best of her, but I think if she gets a strong tempo in front, she can win without surprising.
Race 2. (12:55) McDonald Family Handicap 1100m
3 Rillito (Bet Now: $2.50) is a James Cummings trained mare who has been given a little freshen up since racing over 1200m here on July 14 where she finished off quite strongly but had to settle for a narrow second to Sharpness. She’s got the brilliance to win this and a fast run 1100m does look an ideal set up.
Fresh and back to 1100m looks a good set up for 4 Creativity (Bet Now: $4.50) to run well. This girl hasn’t raced since June 23 over 1400m at Flemington where she looked a good thing on paper but just didn’t run the trip out behind Miles Of Krishan. Really good horse on the fresh side and does tend to save her best for Caulfield.
2 Crystal Fountain (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Stravinsky mare resuming for the Anthony Freedman camp. This girl had a three run prep in Queensland and was okay for the most part without winning but perhaps was outclassed. Cranbourne trial last week looked pretty good to the eye and she is a very good fresh horse, plus is a track/distance winner.
Race 3. (13:30) Pegasus Leisure Group Handicap (78) 1100m
I’m very pleased to see 7 A Good Yarn (Bet Now: $4.40) run in town. Mervyn McKenzie has this horse absolutely low flying at the moment, albeit on Synthetic tracks, but the manner in which he has been winning suggests he is better than just a Synthetic horse. He’ll be up on speed, rolling and giving a great sight.
2 Oberland (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Darren Weir trained gelding who resumed over 1000m at the Valley a fortnight back where he got a mile out his ground but you had to like the way he finished his race off when fifth to You’ve Been Had. He does have a pretty good second up record, and though I’d love him at 1200m, I think he can be effective at 1100m.
14 Plutocracy (Bet Now: $6.50) would see her spank this field. Had three runs in the Autumn where she was good first up in Adelaide before below par efforts in two quality races behind Overshare and True Excelsior respectively. Recent Flemington jump out, albeit quiet, was good and she is a bomb fresh horse.
Race 4. (14:05) Nitto Denko Handicap (84) 1400m
17 Streets Of Avalon (Bet Now: $3.40) looks very well placed. Shane Nicholls has this bloke in a real purple patch who finally put a win on the board a fortnight back over 1500m at the Valley where Zac Spain had the horse in a beaut spot before moving to the leaders on the turn and putting them away to win impressively. Back to 1400m no issue and gets really good weight relief.
5 Anaheim (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented gelding resuming for the Busuttin/Young team. He hasn’t raced since mid October when racing over 1700m at Caulfield, finishing down the track behind Odeon. Been given a good break, dodged the Autumn Carnival, and and his trial last Monday behind Holy Snow at Cranbourne looked pretty good to the eye.
The one that appears silly odds here is 2 Lizard Island (Bet Now: $19.00), who is Group l placed and has been racing in better grade than this. Ran in an open handicap at this track/distance last time and beat all beat the very gutsy and tough campaigner Chamois Road. Horror draw yes and will give them a start, but $20+ is silly.
Race 5. (14:40) Vain Stakes 1100m
I’m keen to see how 6 Tony Nicconi (Bet Now: $2.30) goes here. He was the subject of a significant plonk when debuting over 1200m here back on June 30 and the bets were landed as he won, drawing clear late and winning like a good horse. Form out of that hasn’t exactly been franked but I think you have to trust your eye with you saw.
5 Native Soldier (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Darren Weir trained colt that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Blue Diamond Prelude at this track/distance where he finished off with real purpose to run third to subsequent Blue Diamond winner Written By. Would love to know how he’s trialled, but on form, he’s certainly got the quality to win this.
4 The August (Bet Now: $6.00) looks a really nice type for Brent Stanley who resumes here. Started his career in the early part of the Winter where he won 2/2, the second start coming down the Flemington straight when heavily backed and savaging the line to score. Trialled up well enough at Cranbourne and gets gate one.
Race 6. (15:20) Quezette Stakes 1100m
I’m going to take a chance on 18 Golden Halo (Bet Now: $27.00). Darren Weir trains this filly, who debuted just under three weeks back at Donald where she won like a really good horse. Did plenty wrong in the straight but was hardly extended by Yendall and had the ears pricked on the line. Looks a nice filly and I think each way, she’ll run a beauty.
If 1 Sunlight (Bet Now: $3.50) brings her A-Game, she wins. My reservation with her is how much did the run behind Nature Strip in the Lightning take out of her? He broke her heart on speed I’d say. He poured the pressure on from the start and put her to bed like she was a hack. Has that busted her? The market will tell you, but outside that, her form is near faultless.
6 Qafila (Bet Now: $12.00) is a very good filly that resumes for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This girl hasn’t raced since the Golden Slipper when doing a bit of work in the run but was really just outclassed behind Estijaab. Form around her reads very well for this and recent jump out was encouraging enough to say she’s returned well.
Race 7. (16:00) PB Lawrence Stakes 1400m
For mine, this race evolves around how forward 5 Danon Liberty (Bet Now: $8.50) is, and reading between the lines, he might need this and another, but just have to go with him. He trialled up enormous prior to trying to squeeze in the Stradbroke field, where he couldn’t get a start. He’s a potential stallion prospect so look for him to be ready for races like the Rupert Clarke/Toorak, but for mine, he’s got enough brilliance to win this.
2 Black Heart Bart (Bet Now: $8.00) is a proven warrior for Darren Weir who looks beautifully set up to run well here. Resumed in the Bletchingly where he was run off his legs by Vega Magic but didn’t turn it up and finished his race off quite well to run fourth. Unbelievable record at the Caulfield 1400m and has brilliant second up stats.
4 Boom Time (Bet Now: $31.00) is heading down the Caulfield Cup path but I think at good odds he can run a race here. He hasn’t raced since May 19 when winning like the class horse he is over 2000m at Flemington. He can pull out a decent run first up, he’s got residual fitness and he’ll be strong late. I’d chuck him in wider exotics.
Race 8. (16:40) Regal Roller Stakes 1200m
3 Osborne Bulls (Bet Now: $2.70) on top. James Cummings trains this gelding, who has been a ripper right throughout his career. He hasn’t raced since winning the Luskin Star during the Scone Carnival where he was given a 12/10 from Rachel King. Two trials have been electric leading in, 2/2 fresh and is a 1200m specialist.
I think the forgotten horse here is clearly 8 Muraaqeb (Bet Now: $10.00), resuming for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Impressive winner of the Carbine Club two back before being just over three lengths from Trapeze Artist in the All Aged. Good fresh horse, likes Caulfield and his recent Flemington jump out was very good.
The class runner of the race is clearly 2 Oregon’s Day (Bet Now: $11.00) and I think she has to be seriously respected here despite 1200m clearly being short of her best. Had a very solid Autumn/Winter prep, which ended in Brisbane when a game fifth in the Doomben Cup. Can sprint well fresh, likes Caulfield and her trial at Cranbourne was more than encouraging.
Race 9. (17:15) Legacy 2018 Badge Appeal Handicap 1600m
I’ll go the way of 5 Plein Ciel (Bet Now: $3.10). Darren Weir trains this bloke, who was heavily backed when resuming in the Mildura Cup but just got a little too far back off the pace but you really had to like his finale behind Husson Eagle. Second up syndrome the obvious query, but he’s too good of a horse to ignore.
7 Call Me Handsome (Bet Now: $3.40) has been an absolute model of consistency for the Peter Gelagotis team who finally put a win on the board a fortnight back over the Valley mile when given a beaut steer by Dwayne Dunn to chase hard and get the win over Rhythm To Spare. Now he’s got a win, he can go on with it.
3 Mask Of Time (Bet Now: $9.50) is the pin up horse for the sectional pervs, closing off with real purpose in both runs this time in and clocking some very good late splits, the latest run being a few weeks back at Caulfield over 1400m when warming to the task behind Chamois Road. Third up now, he should just about be ready and up to the mile a big tick.
