Sandown will host their biggest race day on Saturday where it is Zipping Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:25) Merson Cooper Stakes 1000m
9 Salome (Bet Now: $4.20) just has to run somewhere near her debut and she’ll be winning for mine. She was outstanding in the Inglis Banner on Cox Plate Day considering the drama that unfolded on the turn, forcing her near the car park. Still rattled home to run third. Just has to show any signs of natural improvement and she’ll be winning.
This has been a sustained market push for 3 Bandinelli (Bet Now: $4.80). The I Am Invincible colt for Lloyd Kennewell has looked pretty good at the jump outs, seemingly doing everything right and looking a rather precocious juvenile. Stable finds J Mac from a good draw and money speaks all languages in these early two year old races.
2 Memphis Rock (Bet Now: $10.00) has the race experience under the belt and that can’t be ignored entirely. Hasn’t really set the world on fire in both runs but has been far from disgraced. Put a line through last start because that track was very testing in horrible conditions. Back on firmer footing, he can bounce back.
Race 2. (13:00) Sandown Cup 3200m
The blinkers FINALLY go on 3 Yogi (Bet Now: $2.60) and my coin will be on him too. Darren Weir has tried everything with the horse to get him to focus and perhaps sit closer in the run. It hasn’t worked. Blinkers are the final straw. He’s just flopping out the back in his races and leaving his run far too late. He’ll eat up the two miles, likes Sandown…if he runs to his best, he’ll win.
6 Azuro (Bet Now: $3.10) has really turned the corner in recent times for Darren Weir. Got a well deserved win two back over 2400m at Caulfield before racing over 2800m on Cup Day and running a game third to a potential good one I think in Shraaoh. He should have no trouble with 3200m and is a horse in form.
8 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Darren Weir trained stayer who is in a positive frame of mind. Bolted up two back in Adelaide to continue his love affair there before racing over 2800m on Cup Day and working home well from the back to run fourth to Shraaoh. The 3200m is the little unknown but he does have a nice turn of foot if cuddled.
Race 3. (13:35) Twilight Glow Stakes 1400m
3 Eawase (Bet Now: $19.00) looks to be somewhat back to best form for the Snowden camp. Thought she was very good against the bias last time at Caulfield when a closing fifth to Zizzis. I thought she was clearly the best run from that race given the tempo and at her best, she certainly has to be respected against this lot.
8 Gotta Be Gold (Bet Now: $5.50) is a South Australian raider for the Macdonald/Gluyas team who is 2/2 to start the prep. Loved the way she closed off to win the maiden two back before bolting up over 1200m at Morphettville, leading all the way and running really good time. Good draw, Jamie Kah on, she appeals.
16 Camelle (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Darren Weir trained filly who was somewhat unwanted in betting when debuting at Stawell where she got a mile back against the track pattern but loved the way she attacked the line to get the win. These Camelots are flying at the moment and she looks very progressive.
Race 4. (14:10) Eclipse Stakes 1800m
4 Mask Of Time (Bet Now: $4.00) is an absolute beauty for the Maher/Eustace team and he’s just going so well at the moment. Shared the spoils with Best Of Days to win the Coongy before going to the Preview of the November Topaz at Rosehill where he was flat footed early on in the straight but was strong late when a narrow second to Red Excitement. Think he’ll lead these and prove mighty hard to run down.
6 Bring Me Roses (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Tony McEvoy trained mare who brings the A1 form into this, running a closing second to Shillelagh in the Empire Rose on Derby and ran some really good late splits, suggesting that the 1800m will suit, and that form has been franked with the winner being most unlucky in the Mackinnon.
3 Kiwia (Bet Now: $10.00) could bounce back hard here third up. He was a real eye catcher fresh behind Iconoclasm in the VOBIS Gold Star before racing over 1800m on Cup Day and being a touch flat behind Kaonic. Be very wary of the third up bounce back, especially if we get a firmer surface, which he’s looking for.
Race 5. (14:45) Kevin Heffernan Stakes 1300m
I think up to 1300m and with a likely lead, I’ll go the way of 9 Quilista (Bet Now: $6.50). She ran over 1100m against the mares on Derby Day where she was near the speed and fought on quite well in defeat behind a dominant winner in Divine Quality. Up to 1300m, she should lead from the draw and prove hard to beat.
5 Chamois Road (Bet Now: $7.00) is an absolute beauty for the Patrick Payne team and looks to get a lovely run. He resumed on Manikato night at the Valley and was very good in a track record breaking race won by Runson. Tick over trial on Monday was very good, gets the run of the race and a fab second up record.
2 Rich Charm (Bet Now: $7.50) is a very good gelding for Mrs Clarke that resumes. Just forget the two runs last prep. He wasn’t right and nowhere near his best with excuses. Been given a little break and his recent jump out was very encouraging to the eye. 1300m fresh tells me he’s wound up, ready to go. Market will be the guide.
Race 6. (15:25) Sandown Stakes 1500m
8 Fifty Stars (Bet Now: $2.15) is heading towards the Railway but if he wants to get on the plane, he’d want to be winning this. Said the same thing prior to Cup Day over 1400m and he got the job done, but his rating is still too low and needs to win this to guarantee himself a start. Big track, 1500m, fit…plenty to like.
Lisa Enright has 5 Liapari (Bet Now: $15.00) flying. Formerly with Chris Waller, this gelding had his first run for the new stable in the Sale Cup where he ran an absolute blinder I thought and was very good late when a close up fourth to Doubt Defying. Good second up record and he can certainly win this if he’s anywhere near his best.
4 Holy Snow (Bet Now: $7.50) is a huge query. Formerly with Mick Price, this Yulong horse is now with Darren Weir. Hasn’t raced since the Bairnsdale Cup where he ran down the track behind Our Bottino. Form this prep has been terrible but a bit of Weir magic dust and J Allen steering, he has to be respected.
Race 7. (16:00) Sandown Guineas 1600m
Really keen on 12 Seabrook (Bet Now: $3.70). Classy filly for the Mick Price team who just found the class a bit much I thought in the Empire Rose but was far from disgraced behind Shillelagh. She’s got the proper Group l form next to her name and fifth up last prep, she won the Group l Champagne at the distance.
3 Ringerdingding (Bet Now: $3.20) is the horse fresh on the minds of everyone and rightfully so after getting the job done last Saturday over 1400m at Flemington, charging home from the back in a most impressive win. Did he beat much? Probably not, but it was the manner in which he done it that was very good. Off that, he should get the mile with a cold steer.
The class of the field clearly lies with 1 Long Leaf (Bet Now: $8.50). He ran in the Coolmore a fortnight back and I’m not sure you can get a guide on that race given they walked early then dashed home. Still, his effort against the big boys and girls was pretty good. 1600m I have doubts on, but perhaps he has the class and brilliance to overcome that.
Race 8. (16:40) Zipping Classic 2400m
5 Sir Isaac Newton (Bet Now: $21.00 FAT ODDS) is racing quite well at the moment for Team Williams but he just can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran in the Queen Elizabeth last Saturday where he just got too far back but produced good late splits behind Jaameh. If he can sit closer in the run, he can threaten…long time since he has won.
4 The Taj Mahal (Bet Now: $4.70 FAT ODDS) is a classy animal for Team Williams who hasn’t raced since the Moonee Valley Cup where he had no luck in the run, sitting wide no cover throughout and was a beaten horse before the turn. He’s better than that and his Caulfield Cup run prior was a beauty. Reads well for this.
8 Our Libretto (Bet Now: $5.75 FAT ODDS) is on the quick back up for Jordan Childs after racing in the Matriarch last Saturday where she was facing her toughest challenge and without much luck in the straight, she ran quite well when beaten just under two lengths by Kenedna. Think the 2400m will be okay. Class the concern.
Race 9. (17:20) Doveton Stakes 1000m
10 Invincible Al…(Bet Now: $8.50) oh lord. I was on him on Cox Plate Day over 955m and if you were on as well, apologies for bringing up the nightmare. Just got too far back and forced wide against the bias so really, his run was outstanding. Saves his best for the 1000m and has a decent record without winning here.
13 Crown Witness (Bet Now: $7.00) is a fascinating runner. Henry Dwyer trains this mare, who hasn’t raced sine the 2017 Blue Sapphire where she ran fourth to Formality after doing work in front. Hasn’t raced since but the trials leading in have been quite encouraging to the eye and does have a touch of class/brilliance about her.
7 Guard Of Honour (Bet Now: $15.00) comes through the 955m race on Cox Plate Day as well and his effort was okay. Not sure he was entirely happy on the circuit but stuck to his guns well enough in defeat behind Ashlor. Like him up to 1000m on the bigger track and Kris Lees was confident leading into the Valley. Giving him another chance.
Race 10. (17:55) Summoned Stakes 1500m
3 Shoko (Bet Now: $15.00) to lead all the way for mine. Led all the way and though aided by bias was still a strong winner of the Tesio on Cox Plate Day. Good record at Sandown and I think back to 1500m will suit. Much more depth, but will be out of trouble on speed and giving her all, which she has done every start.
4 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented mare for Chris Waller who was around six weeks between runs when racing over 1400m on Cup Day at Flemington and I loved the way she closed off late behind impressive winner Cool Passion. She’ll the rise to 1500m and with the run under the belt, certainly appeals.
1 Pedrena (Bet Now: $21.00) is the interesting runner. Mick Price was really bullish about her chances prior to the first up run at Caulfield where she was plain behind Brave Song and then ran in the Cool Passion race on Cup Day where she was disappointing. Certainly can win if she runs to her best, but is she anywhere near that?
