The Sydney Spring Carnival wraps this Saturday at Randwick with four blacktype events, highlighted by the $125,000 Tatts Club Cup (2400m), a race which has been used as a platform to perhaps squeeze into the Melbourne Cup field. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:35) : City Tatts Club Victory Vein Plate 1000m:
Back Me: This race has really fallen away due to scratchings. Landed now with 9 Madam Moustache, (Bet Now: $2.00) who debuted in the Gimcrack and was pretty good in defeat behind Jorda, getting held up a touch early on in the straight. She did look to parade with upside, so she will improve here, she draws a good gate and ticks alot of boxes.
Big Danger: 3 Darhad (Bet Now: $4.00) is an All Too Hard colt on debut for Michael Freedman who trialled here on September 30 and looked to go about his business very nicely I thought when running second to Poetic Charmer, under a hold throughout before being squeezed late. Hard to beat with a repeat performance.
Roughie: 11 Pricing Power (Bet Now: $10.00) is an I Am Invincible filly on debut for the master of juveniles, Clarry Conners. She has been tuned up for her debut with a couple of barrier trials, the latest coming last Friday at Warwick Farm where she ran third. Looks a filly of real scope and I’d watch her closely.
Race Two (13:10) : Bartier Perry Handicap (93) 1600m:
Back Me: 4 Fabrizio (Bet Now: $1.40) was backed off the map to win the Epsom Handicap, which was understandable given he was the only speed runner and he had only 50kg. I think Victoire perhaps overdid it a touch, but his effort was still very good. Massive drop in depth here, he controls the race and gee he’ll take some running down I suspect.
Big Danger: 2 Torgersen (Bet Now: $4.40) also comes through the Epsom where he got back in the run and closed off well late in the piece behind Hauraki, beaten just over two lengths. The worry I have is that he may be looking for further, but he’s hard fit, in form and should be around the mark.
Roughie: 5 Herne’s Oak (Bet Now: $21.00) looked to trial really well prior to resuming over 1400m at Rosehill where he had a nice sit just off a genuine tempo but given it was his first run since February, his condition gave way and he ran last. The trial prior was very sharp, and he is a two time second up winner. I think he can run a very cheeky race here at odds.
Race Three (13:45) : Aristocrat Handicap (71) 1600m:
Back Me: This race usually provides a contender for the Carbine Club/Sandown Guineas and I think you can mark 1 Bezel (Bet Now: $1.90) down as a horse who will almost certainly head that way. He trialled like Black Caviar prior to resuming at Beaumont-Newcastle where he sat off speed and produced a brilliant finish to bolt clear, then did something similar next start on the same track and giving the track record a nudge. 1600m is no issue and he should be at peak fitness now.
Big Danger: 4 Earth (Bet Now: $10.00) broke the maiden in good style two back at Beaumont-Newcastle before going to the Dulcify where he stuck to the task gamely to run third to Moqueen, beaten three lengths but far from disgraced. This is a slight drop in depth I suspect and he has had the hard mile run under the belt.
Roughie: 8 Bring Me The Bling (Bet Now:$16.00) produced a lovely turn of foot to win fresh at Wyong in a maiden before being freshened and racing in the Reginald Allen where she couldn’t quite quicken behind Zenalicious in a race where the form is suspect, but this filly has really good upside and I think the mile will be ideal.
Race Four (14:20) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1200m:
Back Me: 5 Budderoo Knight (Bet Now: $18.00), for mine, looks the one of the best of the day despite this race only being a Highway. He raced four times during the Winter, winning on two occasions and ending the prep with a fourth behind subsequent city winners. That reads well, but gee he couldn’t have looked any better I thought in a trial at Nowra last Tuesday, where he went about his business very nicely under a hold despite being a touch green. If he brings his best, he just wins IMO.
Big Danger: 8 Farah (Bet Now: $10.00) ran well in a couple of Highway races during the latter part of August, and has since performed well on two occasions at the provincials, the latest coming at Wyong when closing off for third to Godolphin galloper Thar. That form should hold him in good stead for a race like this.
Roughie: Going to take a chance on 3 Rinviata (Bet Now: $12.00). This Matty Dale trained gelding is first up after a very solid prep during the Summer/Autumn, where it ended with a midfield effort in the Canberra Guineas behind Italy. I find it interesting he trialled at Rosehill a couple of weeks back, being hard ridden and given a solid workout. I am sure he could have had a jump out at Canberra, so whatever the case, I’ll take the gamble.
Race Five (14:55) : City Tatts Club Handicap (83) 1400m:
Back Me: 2 Bullrush (Bet Now: $2.80) was a bit disappointing I thought first up at Rosehill behind Shannon Stakes winner Moral Victory before racing there again where he controlled the race from the front and gave a really good sight when second to Extensible, who raced with no luck last Saturday. Controls from the race here, and third up from a break, he should be ready, plus his career best effort came at this track/distance.
Big Danger: 7 Royal Tudor (Bet Now: $5.00) had no luck first up in the Cameron behind subsequent Weekend Hussler winner Chetwood before going to Warwick Farm where he had really good market support and a confident steer from Christian Reith got the four year old home over No Doubt, who has Denpurr form, and that has stacked up well, so this galloper ticks alot of boxes.
Roughie: I think 6 Moher (Bet Now: $5.50) could be a sharp improver here. He resumed five weeks back at Rosehill when sitting near the speed and fading late behind Invinzabeel. Has since trialled at Randwick and looked sharp behind Firsthand. Should get a cosy run outside Bullrush and his lone run at Randwick saw him two lengths off Group l winner He’s Our Rokkii.
Race Six (15:30) : City Tatts Club Cup 2400m:
Back Me: 5 Alegria (Bet Now: $4.00) made a mid race move in the Queens Cup last time out at Rosehill and she almost pinched it but she just felt it late and was picked up by stablemate Allergic and Junoob. Both of those runners ran super races in the Metropolitan, so the form reads well and she has upside.
Big Danger: 1 Junoob (Bet Now: $4.00) is a class animal whose best years are behind him but gee he has raced well in recent times. He ran sixth in the Metropolitan (2400m) and closed off nicely to be only beaten just under three lengths. Looks so well weighted here and the small field aids his cause.
Roughie: 2 Sense Of Occasion (Bet Now: $4.40) also comes through the Metropolitan where he sat near the speed throughout and stuck to the task gamely behind Sir John Hawkwood. He has been up for a while, but continues to race well and stable is low flying at the moment.
Race Seven (16:05) : Ainsworth Brian Crowley Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Guard Of Honour (Bet Now: $5.00) is the to beat. He trialled brilliant prior to resuming in the Heritage where he sat just off the speed before Bowman peeled him clear and he let down hard to get the job done narrowly but impressively. I think he will be much better when he has something to chase, which is what should eventuate here and I think he can run a huge race en route to Melbourne perhaps.
Big Danger: 2 El Divino (Bet Now: $4.60) could be the knockout runner. He comes back from a Golden Rose campaign where he finished behind Astern on both occasions and was far from disgraced. He was due to run in the Roman Consul but was scratched. Potentially the best horse in the race and this looks his level.
Roughie: 12 Suspenders (Bet Now: $13.00) was fantastic I thought when winning last Wednesday at Canterbury given she had to do work on speed with 62kg yet was still good for the leader/runner up, who she was giving 6.5kg to. Tumbles down to the minimum here, she’s hard fit and in winning form. Great knockout chance.
Race Eight (16:50) : ICD Property Nivison 1200m:
Back Me: Really keen here on 10 Egyptian Symbol (Bet Now: $2.60). She is a classy mare for Bjorn Baker who ran so well during the Summer/Autumn in some quality events and for the most part, she had no luck. The trials leading in have been outstanding and there does appear to be a bit of speed, which should allow her to sit back and ambush late.
Big Danger: 6 Fitou (Bet Now: $10.00) was unwanted in betting when resuming in the Mona Lisa but a beaut steer from McDonald got the job done. She then went to the Tibbie where she was the winner bar the winning post when nabbed by quality Perth mare Spirit Bird. Little freshen up should do her the world of good and the trial since looked alright to my eye.
Roughie: 11 Magic Alibi (Bet Now: $26.00) was a bit luckless first up at Rosehill in the Sheraco behind Heavens Above before going to Caulfield where she didn’t have much luck in the run behind Super Cash, who herself is a Stakes winning mare, so that form reads alright for a race like this and she is the fit mare here.
Race Nine (17:30) : City Tatts Lightning 1100m:
Back Me: 16 Spieth (Bet Now: $3.60) is the complete unknown here. Potentially he is the best horse in the race but he hasn’t quite raced against the big boys so this will be the good test. Loved the way he went about it in a recent trial and should prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: More so on reputation, I’ll include 8 Kinglike (Bet Now: $4.80). He resumed in the Bobbie Lewis (1200m) at Flemington and for the most part was a touch disappointing I thought in the run behind Faatinah. He has since trialled at Warwick Farm and bolted up there last Friday. Draws well and should be in the finish if he finds his best.
Roughie: 1 Ninth Legion (Bet Now: $26.00) is a greybeard but he seems to be really enjoying life under the care of Peter Robl. Wound back the clock in the Winter, winning a couple of Stakes races. He has looked really good in a couple of barrier trials, both of which were in fast time. A great outside winning chance.
