The second and final day of The Championships rolls around this Saturday at Randwick, headlined by champion mare Winx looking to make it 25 on the bounce and equal Black Caviar with a win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:25) China Horse Club Mile 1600m
1 Muswellbrook (Bet Now: $9.50) looks a progressive type for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Good on debut at Ballarat behind a subsequent Caulfield winner in Sunset Watch before going to the Mornington Sires where he appreciated the extra trip and good speed, finishing best to win impressively. Randwick mile looks an ideal set up. Happy to be in his corner.
3 Momentum Factor (Bet Now: $9.50) was a real eye catcher two back at Warwick Farm behind Roosevelt before racing there again where he was heavily backed and aided by a peach from Jason Collett, the youngster dived through between runners and proved too good. Looks to have upside and the mile no issue when it comes to the stable.
5 Sokudo (Bet Now: $13.00) is the knockout I think. Notable drifter in betting when resuming over 1300m at Hawkesbury yet produced some outstanding splits late from the back to run third to Guerrier in a race which looked to have depth to it. Looks to have no issue with the mile based on the resumption, has upside and as always, this isn’t a strong race.
Race 2. (12:05) South Pacific Classic 1400m
2 Isaurian (Bet Now: $2.60) is a very good looking colt for Godolphin and James Cummings. Produced an electric turn of foot to win first up at Warwick Farm before going to the Darby Munro three weeks back where he chased hard all the way but just found I Am Excited too good on the day. He has upside and looks much better on top of the ground.
3 Renewal (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Team Hawkes trained gelding who is four weeks between runs since racing over 1500m at Rosehill in the Phar Lap where he tried hard but just lacked the class to go with that quality of horse behind Unforgotten. Freshened up and trialled well last week at Rosehill to prepare for this assignment.
6 Waimea Bay (Bet Now: $10.00) is a smart filly for the Kris Lees yard who ran a really good third to Assimilate two back in the Canberra Guineas before trying to qualify for the Provincial Championships via the Newcastle Qualifier where she was a close up fourth to stalemate Princess Posh. More than likely runs here and she’s certainly up to these.
Race 3. (12:40) Percy Sykes Stakes 1200m
6 Pure Elation (Bet Now: $3.80) looks a standout to me on form. Freshened up and got close to knocking off Estijaab in the Reisling before dropping back to a Warwick Farm maiden and absolutely toying with them from the back and running some very good splits for the meeting. If she can stretch her brilliance to 1200m, she’ll just about be winning.
7 Cristobal (Bet Now: $6.50) looks a very smart filly for Godolphin and James Cummings. Debuted with a fab midweek win at Warwick Farm before going to the Magic Night where she ran a beauty in defeat behind Sunlight, which is nearly the top form for a two year old. Trialled up great last week at Rosehill and is a definite threat.
4 Outback Barbie (Bet Now: $8.50) was heading to the Slipper but after an average run in the Reisling, the stable pulled the pin there and focused on this race. Been given the freshen up and her trial over 1050m here a couple of weeks back was very good when winning by a space in reasonable time. If she produced her Magic Millions run she’d go close.
Race 4. (13:15) Provincial Championships Final 1400m
1 Just Dreaming…(Bet Now: $3.65) I think only bad luck will beat her. She is just the best horse in this race, clearly. Somewhat arrogant win in the Wyong Qualifier before having a throw at the stumps in the Coolmore and she ran an enormous race behind Daysee Doom. Just needs normal luck and she’ll be winning for mine.
13 Newsfan (Bet Now: $9.00) is the new kid on the block and does look a lovely type for the Kim Waugh team. Could make a strong case that he should have won the Gosford Qualifier. Just had no luck when he needed it when second to Serene Miss. The worry I have with him is that the form out of the two wins prior looks awful. But, off last start, I’m happy to include him.
4 Bon Amis (Bet Now: $5.00) deserves his spot in the field and if he can run a strong 1400m, he’ll be in the game. He ran in the Newcastle Qualifier a fortnight back and was desperately unlucky not to win after bungling the start and then getting held up in the straight when second to princess Posh. No luck either in the Wyong Qualifier. He’s the x factor because he does have brilliance.
Race 5. (13:50) Arrowfield 3YO Sprint 1200m
Tough race but I see no reason why 9 Houtzen (Bet Now: $7.00) can’t perform well here. PJ Bell win last Saturday was outstanding I thought because she was the lone survivor of the hot speed and was there to be beaten but she kept finding and proved far too good. Has handled the seven day back up before and looks the leader.
10 I Am Excited (Bet Now: $4.70) is the form three year old filly of Sydney racing at the moment and there’s no reason to suggest why she can’t run well/win again. Beautiful ride from Shinn got her the win a fortnight back in the Darby Munro when getting the inside split and finishing best to score. Hard 1200m is the query, but can’t knock a winner.
6 She Will Reign (Bet Now: $11.00) is the proven performer of the field but how well she is going is a bit of an unknown. Won well enough first up in the Inglis Sprint before going to the Oakleigh Plate where she had no luck. Then went to the William Reid and was disappointing to the eye behind Hellbent. If she brought her best, she’s in the game for sure.
Race 6. (14:25) Australian Oaks 2400m
1 Aloisia (Bet Now: $6.50) is the best bet on the card for me. The more I look at that Vinery replay, her run was just unbelievable in defeat. Had no right to finish off and as close as she did given she was three, largely four wide, for the trip yet still had the hide to show a turn of foot before bottoming out late behind Hiyaam. I think she’s the one to beat from that form reference.
3 Unforgotten (Bet Now: $4.40) is the one with upside and timing about her. Bounced back to her best when winning the Phar Lap before going to the Vinery where she was wide for most of the race, albeit with cover. Produced the quickest final 600m race of the race to run second to Hiyaam. Looks as if she’ll eat up 2400m. Just not sure if she has the brilliance of Aloisia.
7 Contessa Vanessa (Bet Now: $18.00) could well be the forgotten horse from a NZ Oaks perspective. She did a huge job in defeat at Trentham given she did plenty of work from the wide gate yet still had the hide to fight it out with Savvy Coup, but that filly was too good with the more economical run coming to the fore. Price gap between the pair far too great.
Race 7. (15:05) Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2000m
9 Winx…(Bet Now: $1.16) she doesn’t need explaining really. Stunning win in the Chipping Norton before producing some freakish splits to win the George and comfortably holding the subsequent Doncaster winner Happy Clapper. Bolted up in this race last year and really, she is going as well as ever. Just sit back and applaud greatness.
1 Happy Clapper (Bet Now: $16.00) is racing in career best form for Pat Webster and running second to the great mare once again is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Destroyed them fresh in the Canterbury Stakes, charging to the line and through it with real purpose. He then took on Winx in the George Ryder and ran a mighty race to run second to the star mare. Doncaster win last Saturday was dominant, touch arrogant, and from all reports he has come through it with flying colours. 2000m sees him out, but on firm ground, he’s lethal.
5 Success Days (Bet Now: $35.00) is such a fascinating runner and for mine, I think the $4-$5 for him to place is one of the better bets on the program. He is a high class galloper from the UK for Ken Condon who brings some top shelf form from overseas with him. Admittedly, better suited on a track with give in it, but he’ll be on speed and from all reports has settled into Canterbury beautifully.
Race 8. (15:45) Sydney Cup 3200m
Whatever way you look at this race, 1 Almandin (Bet Now: $3.45) is the one to beat. He’s got the locals covered and is thrown in with the weight. Tancred win was outstanding, largely helped by the good jump where he was able to sit much closer in the run and once he did that, he was always going to win. He’s the best two mile Australia has at the moment and is a deserved favourite.
I’ve got a ticket at $41 for 6 Pre Stwick (Bet Now: $8.50) from a couple of months ago so I’ll be cheering him home hardest. Still think he’s great overs as it stands. Japanese stayer who has some excellent form next to his name, largely around Fame Game and Albert. Fame Game ran so well here during the 2015 Melbourne Spring and Albert is one of the best 3000m+ horses in Japan. That just reads so well and from all reports, he has settled in beautifully.
18 Peribsen (Bet Now: $27.00) should only run well here I think. He lacks the turn of foot/class of some of these, but the two miles will be no issue for him. He ran in the Chairmans last Saturday where I thought he did a great job against the bias/tempo to run third to Sir Charles Road after getting a mile back in the run. Not sure he can win at the weights, but he’ll be strong at the end.
Race 9. (16:25) Coolmore Legacy Stakes 1600m
3 Dixie Blossoms (Bet Now: $5.75) is bursting to win a major and the Randwick mile looks the ideal set up for her to break the Group l duck. Could make a good case she should have gone close to winning the Coolmore but had no luck. She then went to the Emancipation and was huge in defeat, but the negative tactics cost her the win. Returns to her favourie track and surely she gets her day in the spotlight.
4 Prompt Response (Bet Now: $8.50) is a ripping mare for the Waterhouse/Bott team who is another knocking on the door of Group l glory. Had the soft run on speed in the Emancipation and under the soft hands of Olly, the mare finished too well for them and got the win. On her home track and will be out of trouble on speed.
7 Spanish Reef (Bet Now: $7.50) is the x factor. This mare is in career best form at the moment for the Ken Keys team and she deserves a crack at this level. Ridden a treat on speed by Zahra last time out in the Sunline and the mare reacted by dashing right away for a dominant victory and continuing the picket fence for the Autumn. Has run well at 2000m before so a hard mile no issue.
Race 10. (17:05) Sapphire Stakes 1200m
If 2 Ghisoni (Bet Now: $10.00) is anywhere near right, I think she goes very close to winning. She is a high class mare that resumes for Godolphn and James Cummings. Had the one run in the Summer at Doomben where she got a mile back and was enormous in defeat behind Don’tbabylon. Goes well fresh and her recent trial here was outstanding. Keen to back her each way.
11 Sugar Bella (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Kris Lees trained mare who produced the win of the day to score first up in the Wenona Girl at this track/distance before going to the Birthday Card at Rosehill where she chased hard all the way but was no match late for Quilista. Fast run 1200m looks ideal and third up, she should be hard fit.
5 Ravi (Bet Now: $7.50) is a definite threat. She resumed in the Wenona Girl where she attempted to lead all the way and gave a really good kick but just ran out of puff late when fourth to Sugar Bella. Think she’ll be much better with a bunny to chase and if that eventuates, she’s a live threat and can definitely win this.
