Nine races will be run and won at Caulfield this Saturday where the feature race is the Final of the Galilee Series. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (3) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:20) Wellington RC Handicap 1200m
1 Heart Conquered (Bet Now: $5.75) looks the safe option. Akeed Mofeed youngster for Team Hawkes who was confidently backed when resuming at Morphettville five weeks ago where he was given a sweet ride just off the pace from Pannell and the horse reacted with a nice finishing burst to get the job done. Looks a nice type and should measure up. Jumped out well last week at Flemington and he has the speed to come over.
5 Ocean Knight (Bet Now: $4.80) is an Ocean Park colt on debut for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This bloke has had a few jump outs/trials, the latest on March 29 at Flemington where he got back in the small field but gee I liked the way he found the line under no riding. Looks a lovely type and should run well here first up.
8 Dark Villain (Bet Now: $31.00) is an I Am Invincible colt for Team Corstens who was kept safe in betting when debuting at Morphettville three weeks back where he got back off the pace and worked home okay without threatening behind Tequila Time, who bolted up last Saturday to frank the form. Trial last week at Cranbourne was very good.
Race 2. (12:55) Hyderabad RC Handicap (78) 1400m
Hard to get away from 7 Amortentia (Bet Now: $2.80). She is a ripper. Notable drifter in the market when attempting to lead all the way at Sandown last time out but she toughed it out really strongly on speed and proved too good for her rivals. Looks to get it good on speed again if Ben Allen so well desires and she should take some beating.
4 Ma Jones (Bet Now: $7.50) won’t know herself back to this level on what is hopefully on a firm track. She was in a 78 at Mornington three weeks ago but it was on a pretty sticky track and she didn’t let down at all behind Heptagon. Much better on firmer footing and if she gets it, her class will carry her a long way.
9 The Thug (Bet Now: $34.00) is a handy middle distance type resuming for Team Cameron. He can be a real enigma at times. Very hot and cold and consistency isn’t his strong point, but his recent jump outs have been quite encouraging and really, at the moment anything Daniel Moor is steering, you have to respect. Not sure he can win, but for multiples I’d include.
Race 3. (13:30) Thomas North Handicap 1600m
2 Savacool (Bet Now: $4.60) on top. Chris Waller trains this filly who looks as if she’ll be on the path similar to that of stablemate Egg Tart and progress to the Oaks, whether it be in SA, QLD or both. Notable drifter in betting when resuming at Rosehill on Easter Monday but gee she was excellent given the circumstances behind stablemate Velocita. She’ll eat up the mile and has more upside than most.
1 Palazzo Vecchio (Bet Now: $2.65) is the horse to beat on form, but if she is to be an SA Oaks filly, she has to be going close to winning this. Very unlucky in her first two runs this time in, but I think you have to say she was disappointing in the Alexeandra. Thought she had her chance to let down but just plugged away. D-Day for her.
11 Sheezdashing (Bet Now: $8.00) looks to be flying for the Ellerton/Zahra and I think she gets a great chance to get a win. Just had no luck in the Mornington Guineas where she got off the speed and couldn’t really get clear at the right time but still finished off with purpose behind Spring Choice. Mile on the big track looks ideal and is a live threat.
Race 4. (14:05) Ladbrokes Handicap (84) 1700m
Third up at the mile, 9 Tiamo Grace (Bet Now: $4.20) should just about be ready fitness wise. Comes back in grade and depth after contesting the Sunline last time out at the Valley where the tempo was against her but I thought she ran really well in defeat behind star mare Spanish Reef, who goes around in the Coolmore Legacy. Looks a good race for her.
10 Heptagon (Bet Now: $6.50) has really turned the corner since being gelded. He has won three of five runs, including his last two. Latest came three weeks ago at Mornington where I thought he was outstanding in winning given he had to make his run nearer the inside, which was the no go zone later in the day yet he finished best to win narrowly but impressively. Hardest test to date but I think he’ll measure up.
I’m very interested in 6 Granddukeoftuscany (Bet Now: $35.00), a former Lloyd Williams runner having his first start for Matty Williams. He hasn’t raced since Cup Day over 2800m when leading and tiring late behind Fanatic. Start prior he ran second to Amelie’s Star, who is a high class stayer. Anywhere near right and he’ll go close, so market might well be a guide.
Race 5. (14:45) Ladbrokes Galilee Series Final 2400m
3 Wolfe Tonne (Bet Now: $10.00) for me. Francis Finnegan trains this three year old, who is still a maiden but is better than what his record suggests and is certainly up to beating these. Given no hope last Thursday night at Pakenham in a 2000m maiden but he still got very close to winning given the slow tempo, with the bob of the head being the difference. Four lengths off Ace High in the Victoria Derby is good enough to run well here.
2 Han Xin (Bet Now: $2.70) is the one to beat on form and he has the right racing pattern of being on speed. He led all the way to win the key lead up over 2000m here a fortnight back and you can out it down to a combo of a positive ride from Damian Lane and a stack of negative rides from behind, who gifted the race to the Waterhouse/Bott galloper. If he gets it easy again, he’ll take some beating.
12 Maheera (Bet Now: $13.00) is one horse who will have no trouble with the trip. Was one of the better maidens racing around in Victoria and she finally got the win on the board last time out over 2200m at Ballarat. Looked in a bit of trouble early on in the straight but once Yendall got stuck in, she drew clear and won impressively. That could well be the confidence boost she needs.
Race 6. (15:25) Selangor Turf Club Handicap 2000m
1 Spectroscope (Bet Now: $3.90) just wins this if he brings his best form. He has been outstanding in two runs back from a break. Resumed with an eye catching fourth in the Newcastle Newmarket behind Lanciato before going to the Doncaster Prelude where he closed off well late behind Cellarman. 2000m third up, back to this level…gee I’m keen.
2 Berisha (Bet Now: $4.80) is going really well at the moment for John Sadler. Impressive winner of the Yarra Valley Cup two back before going to the Easter Cup here a fortnight back where he worked home with purpose late in a strong effort when fourth to surprise winner Shoreham. Brings the right form, hard fit and in form.
3 Grey Lion (Bet Now: $8.00) is the real unknown here. This is the easiest race he has contested since coming to Australia and despite being first up, I think he’ll run well. He is a three time first up winner, and though better suited on rain affected ground, he was given a searching jump out recently at Ballarat and for mine will be forward enough to run well.
Race 7. (16:05) Walk For Phil Handicap 1200m
Back Me: Hard to get away from 6 William Thomas (Bet Now: $4.20). He looks a very good prospect for John Price. Backed off the map when resuming at Sandown on Easter Monday, where $10+ was offered early before being crunched to $2.40 and bolting up, doing a good job to win given he chased a hot speed. 1200m looks no issue, has upside and a stack of brilliance.
10 Iconoclasm (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very interesting runner. Few weeks between runs for the Weir camp after racing over 1250m on the Parks track against the older horses where he was backed as if unbeatable and despite nearly everything going wrong for him in the run, he proved far too good for his rivals. Tougher here, but very likeable.
12 Reilmartini (Bet Now: $4.80) looks a very promising three year old for the Darren Weir team. Two from three in his career to date with a placing in town in between. He won like a good horse last start at Ballarat over the six furlongs, charging clear with purpose against the older horses and running good time. Shocked if he didn’t measure up.
Race 8. (16:45) JRA Handicap (84) 1200m
Looks a good speed, so I’m hoping 10 Written Era (Bet Now: $16.00) can get three wide cover and launch late. Jury probably out on her after two runs back from a break where she has been okay without setting the world on fire. The big lead for me, potentially, is now that Aaron Purcell is just focusing on his stable, he can put more time into her now because ever since Purcell took over the stable of Ciaron Maher, this mare has gone backwards form wise.
12 Brahmos (Bet Now: $5.00) is an above average conveyance for the John Sadler team who was confidently backed a few weeks back at Mornington and with some help from a gem of a ride from Meech, the gelding never really looked like getting beat and won as it pleased. Toughest test to date here but I think he’ll go close.
8 Saint Valorem (Bet Now: $12.00) is always a good fresh horse and I reckon he gets the right set up to run well against first up. His overall first up record might not read great but he has run some ripping races in quality events. Trialled up well last week at Cranbourne behind Super Cash and he should appreciate a fast tempo.
Race 9. (17:20) Sandown Park UK Handicap 1100m
2 Lady Esprit (Bet Now: $9.50) for me. This mare has been in career best form this time in, headlined by a win in the WJ Adams here before solid efforts at Group l level in the Oakleigh Plate and Galaxy. Will clearly love the drop in depth and back to her own sex. Just depends how much petrol is left in the tank. Market will be the guide.
1 Cool Passion (Bet Now: $4.50) is the clear class runner of the field but first up with the weight is the negative which is why she isn’t on her top. Had a fab Spring prep for the McEvoy team, highlighted by a win in the Northwood Plume and placing in the Tristarc. Jump outs have been good and likes racing here.
19 If Not Now When (Bet Now: $17.00) is a bit of a bludger for Henry Dwyer but we know that on her best form, she’s up to running a bold race here. She comes through a 1000m dash at Sandown on Easter Monday where she was close up behind Keep Courting. Runs well on her home track and tumbles in weight.
