Group l racing returns to Brisbane and Doomben this Saturday where we will see another cracking edition of the Doomben 10,000. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:15) : Swire Shipping Plate (Class 6) 1100m:
Back Me: 5 Invincible Express (Bet Now: $2.45) is a really good mare for the Vandyke camp. She has won her last five, the latest when resuming over the short course at Ipswich and despite having a gut like mine in the mounting yard, her class and brilliance got her home. She blew them away second up last time in, and though this is her toughest test to date, I think she can measure up.
Big Danger: 18 Assertory (Bet Now: $18.00) is a stablemate of Invincible Express who has been pretty solid in two runs back from a break. She ran over 1200m at Ipswich last time out and chased hard when a close up third to Magnus Cor, who ran well on Wednesday, so the form reads okay, she’s at peak fitness and draws a lovely gate.
Long Shot: They look as if they will go quick here, so the horse to close off late will be 17 Tansy (Bet Now: $26.00). Former Victorian who did a really good job for the Mayfield-Smith camp in four runs, highlighted by a win at Eagle Farm. Before he came north, his last start in Victoria resulted in a fifth to the Group l performed Hellbent…how well does that read!
Race Two (12:51) : Ambassador Travel Handicap (85) 1350m:
Back Me: Dartboard job this. 8 Sharpe Hussler (Bet Now: $12.00) for me here in a nightmare to sort out. Chris Munce trained galloper that has been really good in three runs back from a break, the latest at Eagle Farm a fortnight back when third to the classy mare Mystic Opal. Just needs to overcome the sticky draw to figure.
Big Danger: 2 Privlaka (Bet Now: $4.20) ran second to Mystic Opal in that race mentioned above and he was a bit unlucky not to finish a touch closer. Got held up early on in the straight when appearing to have plenty to offer but he did get out in time. Winner was too good. No horse of that class here, so he has to rate highly.
Long Shot: 3 Binalong Road (Bet Now: $19.00) is a talented galloper that resumes for the Mack Griffith yard. He’s very good when he is right, and better than this grade, but he can be quite hot and cold at times as we saw last prep. Looks spot on off the back of a recent trial win, and on his best form, he’d go awfully close here.
Race Three (13:26) : Singapore Turf Club Members Handicap 1600m:
Back Me: Landed with 7 Sheiswhatsheis (Bet Now: $8.00) in a very even contest. Mare for Tony Gollan that fought on bravely in the Toowoomba Cup behind Cylinder Beach before stepping back to the mile here and perhaps not handling the soft track behind Single Gaze. Looks to lead for fun here, so she can bounce back hard.
Big Danger: 10 Sultan Of Swing (Bet Now: $11.00) is a quality kiwi galloper that kicks off his Carnival for the Shaun Ritchie yard. He comes to Queensland in ripping form off the back of a very good prep back home. Won two on the trot before running a game third at Avondale on Anzac Day behind the well performed Jiayuguan. He is hard fit and in form, so don’t discount him.
Long Shot: 6 Maryore (Bet Now: $11.00) showed brilliant acceleration to win a heat and then the final of the Provincial Championship before being thrown in at Stakes level at this track/distance where she didn’t quite measure up behind Single Gaze. Looks a bit easier here and I think she will be better if she is outside horses.
Race Four (14:06) : Moet Champagne Classic 1200m:
Back Me: 6 Tangled (Bet Now: $8.00) is potentially the best horse in the race but he can do so much wrong. He put it all together last time out on last Tuesday at Wyong where he did a huge job to get the win given he was three and four wide no cover for the entire trip yet kept surging under Avdulla and finished best. Waller has used this race as a platform towards the top shelf races so I am respecting this horse here.
Big Danger: 11 She’s Our Star (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented filly that resumes for the Tony Gollan yard. Debuted over 1050m here in October and scored a sharp on speed win. Freshened up and ran at the same track/distance when running third to Houtzen. No trials, but I think she will be forward enough given this is her first crack at 1200m.
Long Shot: 12 Showashadow (Bet Now: $13.00) is a good filly for the Hulbert team. Resumes here off a two run prep in the early part of the Autumn. The second star saw her win and she was very good, and the form out of that has been great with four subsequent winners. Draws gate one and gets Bosson steering.
Race Five (14:46) : Suez Queensland Day Stakes 1350m:
Back Me: 3 Hall Of Fame (Bet Now: $5.00) looks close to a standout to my eye. High class three year old for Te Akau Racing that is a Group l winner who comes here with some big wraps. On the form guide, the run at Te Rapa was disappointing, but the track was very shifty that day and he was first up at 1200m against some quality gallopers and that form has been franked. Much better suited on top of the ground and up to 1350m. Keen.
Big Danger: 2 Morton’s Fork (Bet Now: $4.40) is the big watch here. Godolphin three year old loaded with class and potential but just can’t quite put it all together. Resumes after a pretty disappointing Autumn campaign which ended with a down the track effort in the Australian Guineas. Trial efforts have been quite good and he does sprint well fresh.
Long Shot: 7 Billy The Kid (Bet Now: $7.50) is a classy three year old for the Meagher camp. Resumed over 1300m at Eagle Farm a fortnight back where he was given a lovely run in transit by Luke Dittman and loomed large to win but couldn’t hold out the finishing burst of Oink. Would prefer him on the bigger track, but I think he has enough class/quality to measure up here.
Race Six (15:26) : Aqwa Constructions Chairmans Handicap 2000m:
Back Me: 8 The Chairman (Bet Now: $9.00) on top for me here. Mick Price trained galloper who has been excellent in two runs back from a spell. The latest came over the Caulfield mile where he got back in the run and closed off his race nicely behind surprise winner Rhythm To Spare. Stable have said that his GF is the Brisbane Cup, so there should be room for improvement, but he draws a lovely gate and gets Avdulla steering.
Big Danger: 7 Chocante (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented four year old gelding from the Stephen Marsh stable. Kiwi raider who has had two runs back from a break. Resumed at Te Rapa and stuck on well behind a quality galloper in Let Me Roar before going to the Easter Stakes at Ellerslie where the slow tempo was clearly against him behind Seventh Up. Up to 2000m looks ideal, he has fresh legs, and you always have to respect the kiwis.
Long Shot: 11 Zambezi Warrior (Bet Now: $13.00) is another kiwi raider, this one for Te Akau racing. He ran a beauty in the Wellington Cup in the Summer so we know he has the class/quality, and his two runs back from a break has been pretty good, the latest over the mile at Avondale behind the well performed Jiayuguan. Really good record at 2000m+ and has fresh legs.
Race Seven (16:04) : James Boags Premium Doomben 10,000 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Start Wondering (Bet Now: $13.00) looks one of the best each way plays of the entire weekend. Star galloper who kicked off his career in NZ before being sent to Chris Waller where he left a decent impression before suffering a bleeding attack and heading home. In his second NZ stint, he has won two Group l races and placed in another two. But what makes me lean his way is his trial win at Waverly. Went like Black Caviar in winning that and doing it under triple wraps. Brilliant fresh record and will take a power of beating.
Big Danger: 12 Russian Revolution (Bet Now: $2.90) is the clear watch horse. Smart three year old for Team Snowden who scored a spectacular win in the Galaxy first up before being heavily backed in the TJ Smith where he pulled hard and was left gassed 200m out behind Chautauqua. Trial win since was very sharp and on his best form, he’d go awfully close here.
Long Shot: The bounce back horse for mine is clearly 3 Takedown (Bet Now: $31.00). Just put the pen through his first two runs this time in. Both been on wet tracks and know now for sure that he is a dud when he gets his toe in. The trial win prior to the Hall Mark was very good and last two times he has been on a firm track at 1200m, he won the Winterbottom and was one of the runs of the race in the International Sprint at Sha Tin. Don’t rule him out if the track dries out.
Race Eight (16:39) : Mittys Rough Habit Plate 2000m:
Back Me: 14 Shocking Luck (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented galloper for Te Akau Racing and the Autridge/Richards. Kicked off his Derby prep over 1500m at Ipswich where he was an alarming drifter in the market and though he didn’t win, his effort was very good. Didn’t appear to handle the Ipswich track all that well, but you had to like the way he ran to the line and through it. Up to 2000m is perfect and you have to respect the stable.
Big Danger: If this race was at Eagle Farm, I’d be all over 12 Order Again (Bet Now: $4.40). He didn’t beat much at the midweeks a couple of weeks ago at Eagle Farm but the manner in which he spanked them and how easily he did it…gee it was impressive. He is the clear number one seed of the locals when it comes to the Derby, so I’m keen to see what he does here.
Long Shot: 7 Realing (Bet Now: $26.00) comes through the Gunsynd and like most engaged there, he really had no hope given the two up in front cleared right out and spanked the rest of them, but I thought Realing was okay considering he was only second up. Looks suited up to 2000m here and though he lacks the class, he has the scope.
