Blacktype racing returns to Caulfield this Saturday where it is Sir John Monash Stakes Day. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:15) Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap 1200m
Interesting to see how 6 Lady Loire (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) goes for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This girl debuted over 1200m at Wagga and while the field wasn’t strong depth wise, she spanked them by nearly six with something in reserve and her late splits, her last 600m especially, was clearly the best of the meeting outside the open 1000m sprint. I think she can run well against this lot.
1 Can’t Be Done (Bet Now: $3.30 TOP ODDS) will be likable for most here given he has the A1 form. Sat outside King Of Hastings at Sandown four weeks ago and knuckled down strongly late to beat the Freedman youngster, who won impressively here two weeks ago to tick that form off. Did run well here the start prior and he seems to be getting better with racing, so clearly a threat.
3 Star Surprise (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Sidereus for the Mike Moroney stable who has had two career outings. Debuted with a strong second at Sandown behind Can’t Be Done before going to Echuca where he got off the speed before Nikita angled into clear and he finished with purpose late to get the win. Heading in the right direction and is a definite chance.
Race 2. (11:45) Ladbrokes Cash In Handicap 1200m
4 Miss Vixen (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is flying for Cindy Alderson. Ran over 1200m at Caulfield a few weeks ago where she just got too far back in the run but loved the way she found the line to run fourth to Petrelle. Hopefully can sit closer in the run from the draw and showed the start prior she can match it with some talented boys, so for mine, she’s one of the leading chances.
5 Charlayne (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) is the interesting runner. Helped by a fast speed first up at Randwick but still got the job done before racing at Rosehill a few weeks ago where she looked to travel like the winner when peeling off the back of England, but couldn’t finish it off and had to settle for fifth. She can be hit and miss to follow and trust, but her best is good enough to figure.
1 Sylpheed (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is a talented mare for Matt Cumani that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since contesting the Adelaide Cup where she looked like a tired horse after a pretty long prep and ended up finishing down the track behind Surprise Baby. Looked okay in a recent jumpout and though 1200m is short of her best, she does have a touch of class on her side.
Race 3. (12:20) Ladbrokes Handicap (78) 1400m
Up in trip and back on a bending track, want to give 1 Laure Me In (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) another look. He jumped out like a star prior to resuming down the Flemington straight where he looked a bit lost and uncomfortable when down the track behind Groundbreak. Like him up to 1400m and while the form guide says 0/2 at Caulfield, the first run, he should have won and the other run he was at the end of a long prep and a close up fourth. Hard to beat.
14 King Kabuto (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) looks to be going well for the maher/Eustace stable, winning his past two. Gave them an absolute spanking two back at Edenhope before going to the Parks track at Morphettville when getting the beaut run just off the speed and finished best. Gets right down in the weights after the claim, hard fit, in form…likeable chance here.
Up to 1400m will suit 5 Arancini (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS), who comes through the Groundbreak race from three weeks ago where he got back in the ruck and was never a factor, but did make ground very late in the piece. He is better suited at seven furlongs and from gate one, he should sit much closer in the run and if the inside is okay, he should run a cheeky race at odds.
Race 4. (12:55) Ladbrokes Cash Out Handicap 1400m
2 Morrissy (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) does look a little query at the trip but the big tick for him is remaining against his own age and the claim for Michael Poy. Sweet steer by Willow was a large factor to him bolting up at Sandown a few weeks ago over 1200m. He likely does no work from the draw, provided he gets cover, and I think it will help him run out a strong seven furlongs.
If 1 Smart Elissim (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) can repeat his last start win over this track/distance, he’ll just about win. Consistency though isn’t his strong point but it was a dominant win here last time, aided by a lovely ride, a positive ride from Luke Nolen. Lachie King goes on and his 2kg claim will be handy. Really hard to beat if he can repeat the dose…I’d just rather watch than back.
5 Bricktop (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) had been going well for John McArdle but was just struggling to get the job done so the stable dropped him back in grade to the Synthetic at Pakenham for a confidence boost and he got it under a confident steer from Jamie Mott from the back. Has always showed city class ability. Now his confidence is up, he might well go on with it in a winnable race.
Race 5. (13:30) Ladbrokes Info Hub Handicap 1400m
Happy to be in the corner of the James Cummings trained 3 Organza (Bet Now: $1.80). She is a few weeks between runs for James Cummings since contesting the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich where she got shuffled back further than anticipated, which sealed her fate, but she was excellent late when clear behind Ready To Prophet. Think she’s ready to win now.
Alisa Hinch has done a fab job with 7 Elite Drake (Bet Now: $6.00). Tough on speed wins at his past couple, firstly at Bendigo before racing here a fortnight ago where he was there to be beaten but kicked hard in the straight and with the lightweight was too good. Hardest test to date this time around, but has the right racing pattern and will no doubt give his all once again.
The best way to ride 2 Ozi Choice (Bet Now: $23.00) is to roll along on speed and make it a true contest and Dean Yendall does ride this horse better than anyone so him being back on, keen to see how he goes. His two runs back from a break have been average, but the lead is there for him if Yendall wants it and if he gets it, I think he could be a sneaky knockout chance.
Race 6. (14:10) Ladbrokes $101 Odds Handicap 2000m
IMO, the two favs are too short to have a bet there, so provided there are eight starters, I think each way, can’t go wrong with 2 Aristocratic Miss (Bet Now: $9.50). Thought she was disappointing two back behind Sure Knee but stepped up to 2100m at Sandown where she led and though challenged, she kicked hard and was too good. Can see her getting the cart over via Tavirun and from there, Dwayne Dunn can do whatever he wants.
3 Tavirun (Bet Now: $2.50) is a son of Tavistock for the Busuttin/Young team who had been a bit frustrating this prep prior to racing here two weeks ago when leading from the wide gate and he gave nothing else a look in, leading all the way under a ripping front running steer from Nikita. Query is now can he repeat the dose because consistency isn’t his strong point.
7 Doroza (Bet Now: $9.50) is a few weeks between runs for the Matt Cumani stable since racing at this track/distance when a bit unlucky not to finish closer but for the most part, he had his chance when running sixth to Dogmatic, beaten five lengths. Has had the break between runs but tuned up with a solid win in a jumpout on the Synthetic at Ballarat. His best is good enough to be competitive. Just needs to show it.
Race 7. (14:50) Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap 1200m
Taking a chance on the James Cummings trained 9 Gododdin (Bet Now: $4.00), who comes here with fresh legs. Had two runs in Sydney to start her prep, leading all the way in impressive fashion at Canterbury before being a part of a suicidal speed at Randwick and fading out of the finish behind Charlayne, and that form has been ticked off with Ready To Prophet winning the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich. Recent Flemington jumpout saw her keen in the run on speed but liked the way she went to the line. Her best is good enough to beat these.
2 Golden Halo (Bet Now: $4.60) is three weeks between runs for the Daniel Bowman team after contesting the Creswick Stakes where she got a long way back down the Flemington straight but worked home strongly to finish second to Gytrash. Likely eases back from the gate again but this time around, the depth is clearly not as strong and back on a bending track, she’s hard to beat.
I think a strongly run 1200m will suit the Jim Conlan trained 13 Pinyin (Bet Now: $7.00), who comes through a 1400m race at the Sandown midweeks where she was somewhat anchored with the weight on the bog track and I’m not sure 1400m is her trip when second to Benitoite. Down to 51kg on her back, she’ll sit off a good speed I suspect and launch at them late.
Race 8. (15:30) Sir John Monash Stakes 1100m
I think the each way bet of the weekend comes here in the shape of 2 Malibu Style (Bet Now: $7.00), a tough winner of the Sprint Series Final last Saturday. He was there to be run down, but he showed real ticket late when challenged and was too good. How about this for an amazing stat with this horse. He’s had six runs on the quick back (9 days or sooner) for three wins and three placings, which I find remarkable, so that is certainly no issue, he draws soft and Chris Parnham comes over for the ride. Shocked if he doesn’t run top three.
Looks a lovely first up assignment for the James Cummings trained mare 13 Soothing (Bet Now: $4.20). Talented mare who hasn’t raced since the Dovteon on Zipping Classic Day at Sandown in the Spring when a somewhat unlucky fourth to Malibu Style after getting held up in the straight. Noted fresh horse and her two trials leading in have been quite good to the eye.
She’s flying 11 Miss Norway (Bet Now: $20.00) but has thrown away both races this prep due to laying in. Definitely should have won first up down the Flemington straight when beaten a lip by Parwan Prince before racing here two weeks ago and again wanting to lay when fourth to Miss Iano. If she runs straight and corrects that bad habit, she should run very well at this level.
Race 9. (16:10) Ladbrokes Multiverse Handicap (90) 1700m
If 9 Shrouded In Mist (Bet Now: $3.30) can take advantage of the inside gate, she’s clearly the horse to beat. Ran over the mile here two weeks ago where she just got too far back from the wide gate when a closing fifth to Tinkermosa. Gate one here, hoping Willow can be positive and hold the back of likely leader Our Bottino, and if that eventuates, she’ll take some holding out.
Filthy I didn’t have a cent on 3 Bedford (Bet Now: $5.00) at Sandown last time. Start prior he was awful behind Dr Drill, so I penned him and what did he do? He went to Sandown and won most impressively at $13+ under a lovely ride from Jamie Mott. He is a two time winner at Caulfield and now he comes here in winning form. His best is good enough to measure up.
Interesting placement from Chris Waller when it comes former UK hurdler 4 Master Shuhood (Bet Now: $8.00). Had two runs in Australia in the Autumn to begin life down under, scoring a brilliant win first up at Mornington (Metro) before going to Sandown where he ran a close up fourth to All Too Huiying. Has been ridden out in both trials in Sydney, but has found the line strongly, so keen to see what he does.
