Group l racing in Adelaide continues this Saturday at Morphettville where it is South Australian Derby Day. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:41) Jeanneret Wines Handicap (90) 1200m
7 Falcool (Bet Now: $3.05) clearly on top for me. Former Victorian who is having his first run for Will Clarken and I’ll say it again, he rivals Waller and Weir as the best trainer in Australia at improving tried horses. Trialled up enormous last week at Strathalbyn and don’t be worried that he was ridden out. Inside was quicksand that morning and at the race meeting the day prior, and they smashed the clock relative to that trial session. Very keen to see what he does.
8 Exalted Adam (Bet Now: $5.50) bounced back into the winners list a fortnight back on the Parjks track, with the blinkers coming back off. He jumped better, got into a good spot and a lovely ride in the end from Dunn was the difference between winning and losing. Can he repeat the dose? Not sure, but off last start, he’s a threat.
2 Brown Ben (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Tony McEvoy trained gelding that is first up here. This horse has immense talent but sometimes the screws upstairs aren’t on properly and he can be a bit hit and miss at times, so that’s the unknown with him, but he can sprint well fresh and his trial here a few weeks back was very good to the eye.
Race 2. (13:16) Terry Howe Printing Handicap (70) 1050m
7 Super Snob (Bet Now: $7.50) looks extremely hard to beat back to this level. Ran in the VOBIS Gold Sprint last time out at Caulfield and was far from disgraced for mine behind Rich Charm, who looks a live chance next week in the Goodwood. You’d have to think that form is good enough to go close here.
5 Lady Of Crebilly (Bet Now: $5.00) is a big watch. Phillip Stokes trains this filly, who hasn’t raced since the Summer when on the Magic Millions path. She eventually got to the Guineas but was outclassed behind Pierata. Very good fresh horse and her trial win at Strathalbyn last week was very good to the eye.
2 White Kaps (Bet Now: $15.00) is a handy son of Kaphero resuming for Gordon Richards. This bloke hasn’t raced since Feb 10 at Morphettville on the Parks track when scoring a dominant win, aided by a lovely ride from Chris Caserta. Two of his three career wins have come first up and despite no trials, I’ll be keeping close tabs on him.
Race 3. (13:56) Autumn Series Final 1400m
I think young Kersley rode 1 Tatoosh (Bet Now: $5.00) a touch too aggressively on Anzac Day at Flemington over 1800m. I think had he got another chance, he would have waited to peel out because exposing this horse at 1800m first time this prep before the turn, especially at Flemington, he was always vulnerable. Back to 1400m, back home, he should take some beating.
2 Manuel (Bet Now: $4.55) looks to have turned the corner this time in. Really good win first up over 1200m here before racing over 1300m on the Parks track a fortnight ago and running a close up second to Exalted Adam. Think he’s ready for the seven furlongs now and draws to get good cover and have last crack.
5 Strategic Glass (Bet Now: $27.00) is a beauty for the Sue Jaensch team. Probably not a fully fledged city grade horse but whenever he does come to town, he runs well. Resumed at Penola where he was hard in the market and under a lovely ride from Todd Pannell, the gelding won impressively. Horrible second up record but always respect the stable.
Race 4. (14:36) SA Sires Produce Stakes 1400m
Very interested to see how 10 Gododdin (Bet Now: $8.50) measures up. Thought this girl was an eye catcher two back at Warwick Farm behind a potential Group l horse in Pure Elation before getting the job done at Kensington. She’s racing as if 1400m will suit her and third up, she should just about be at peak fitness.
1 Tequila Time (Bet Now: $3.45) is the pick of the locals. This bloke is just low flying this time in, winning three of three in very impressive fashion, the latest coming a fortnight back in the Breeders Stakes when on speed and fighting hard to win. Bear in mind this race is run on the Parks track so those on speed will be advantaged.
9 Our Long Sali (Bet Now: $13.00) is a big watch for mine. Tassie filly for Stuart Gandy who has been proving far too good form them back home, the latest an absolute spank job over 1200m at Hobart. Deserves a crack on the main land and I think this is the perfect race. There is quality, but very winnable if she can extend her brilliance to seven furlongs.
Race 5. (15:16) Adelaide Guineas 1600m
1 Peaceful State (Bet Now: $2.30 ODDS BOOST) should be winning but I wouldn’t want to be taking anything silly short about him. His win a fortnight back was unbelievable but you have to keep in mind they went around sub 46 for the first 800m and he was cuddled during that time so he was ridden to explode and he did. Visually spectacular, probably wins again here, but I’d want black figures before stepping in.
2 Sirrconi (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Peter Morgan trained three year old who does have some very good form lines next to his name. Took on the older horses two weeks ago at Caulfield and was far from disgraced when fourth to Lizard Island. Back to his own age, looks the leader and if left alone, he could take some stopping.
6 Danger Deal (Bet Now: $21.00) comes through the race won by Peaceful State two weeks ago and I thought his effort was very good. Did a bit of work in the run from the tricky draw and couldn’t finish it off. Has run well in harder races at the mile before and with a more economical run in transit here, I think he can run well.
Race 6. (15:56) Provincial Series Final 1800m
4 Bertwhistle (Bet Now: $3.65) should be winning this. Darryl Dodson trains this mare, who is on the quick back up after racing over 2000m at Flemington last Saturday where she go back off the pace but finished off with real purpose I thought behind dominant winner Lipstick Lover, producing some of the best late splits of the race. Back to 1800m and back in depth, gee she’ll take some beating.
2 Enki (Bet Now: $5.25) is a query beyond the mile but he’s racing too well to not include. Beautiful ride in front from Holder last Wednesday at Strathalbyn and he absolutely bolted in, winning quite comfortably. Just needs to stretch that out to the 1800m, something he has struggled at previously, but I’ll give him another look.
18 Lynch Mob (Bet Now: $15.00) is racing quite well at the moment for the Tony McEvoy yard but he just needs another win on the board. Ran over 1700m at Gawler on Anzac Day and was okay without shooting the lights out behind Going Gaga. Has run well at a longer trip before so the rise to 1800m should suit.
Race 7. (16:36) South Australian Derby 2500m
I think if 3 Leicester (Bet Now: $4.20) can get a cuddle from the barrier and be saved for the final 500m, his ability/brilliance/turn of foot will come to the fore. I think if he’s made to run a strong 2500m, I think he’s a risk, but I don’t see them going hard here, so his turn of foot, I’m hoping, will come to the fore. Chairmans win was dominant and he looks the one to beat.
1 Tangled (Bet Now: $5.75) has the form on the board, but how much juice is left in the tank remains to be seen. Last start was the Frank Packer and I think at the 1999m mark, he was in front, and at the 2001m mark. But at the 2000m mark, Higher Ground got his head down and won. Run in the Derby start prior was a beauty and that does look good form. Gate is the negative.
6 High Sherrif (Bet Now: $8.50) is a very lightly raced kiwi for Roger James but gee he brings across some very strong efforts next to his name. Only a veteran of just four starts, but is showing really good promise and his run last time out on the bog at Pukekohe was full of merit. And when Roger James brings horses to Australia, you have to respect.
Race 8. (17:12) SA Sprint Series Final 1100m
22 Azazel (Bet Now: $4.30) is a talented colt for Tony McEvoy who was probably disappointing when resuming two weeks ago but perhaps you have to be a bit forgiving. Not sure racing inside horses is his go and he didn’t finish off, which isn’t what the market support suggested. Happy to give him another look back on the bigger track.
4 Split Lip (Bet Now: $5.75) is a smart three year old filly for Will Clarken who had been battling to put another win on the board but that all changed three weeks back at this track/distance when coming with a well timed run under Jamie Kah to score impressively. Takes on the older horses now, but she has class/quality.
7 Rock Status (Bet Now: $15.00) comes through the Split Lip race here three weeks ago. He just got a mile back in the run but you had to like his finale behind the filly when beaten just over a length. Tick over trial win last week at Strathalbyn was very impressive and look for him to get back and attack the line late.
