WA racing this Saturday will take place at Ascot for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:24) Commit To Change Handicap (66+) 1100m
7 Enticing Star (Bet Now: $1.18) is indeed a rising star of WA racing and she should put this lot away. Resumed over 1000m here a fortnight back where she looked in a bit of trouble nearer the inside but once the gap opened, Pike gave her a click and away she went. Can only improve off that and looks the winner.
3 Speeding Comet (Bet Now: $5.50) is going pretty well at the moment for the Simon Miller team. Sat wide in the race mentioned above won by Enticing Star and tried hard to close off but the Williams was far too brilliant on the day. Expecting something similar here, but the small field will help his cause somewhat.
2 Shady Gray (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Vital Empire gelding that resumes. He is nine weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here where he finished down the track behind The Celt. Comes here with no trials under the belt but is a two time first up winner and does draw to get a suck run just behind the speed.
Race 2. (15:04) Rotary Club Of Perth Handicap (1MW) 1400m
2 Pearls And Prawns (Bet Now: $2.20) looks the way to go. Very promising filly who ran over 1200m here last Wednesday where she was gifted the lead on a platter and she made them pay with a commanding performance. She has looked a Saturday class filly since day one and I think she gets a great chance to showcase it here.
1 Necklet (Bet Now: $2.20) comes back slightly in depth and grade after contesting the Sheila Gwynne three weeks back where she was on speed throughout and looked to travel well but just found Mizlecki too good on the day. Has the pace to overcome the draw, hard fit, in from and Kirby rides. Ticks plenty of boxes.
4 Regal Moon (Bet Now: $4.40) is a talented Testa Rossa mare that resumes for Team Williams. This girl hasn’t raced since Feb 24 over 1200m here when luckless behind a wall of runners behind King Of Wu. Resumes with no trials, but she is a very good fresh horse, draws a nice gate and does get the services of Pike.
Race 3. (15:44) Neometals Handicap 1400m
Happy to butter up on 4 Gifted Warrior (Bet Now: $7.00). Ran over 1500m here a fortnight back where he got back in a slowly run affair and couldn’t produce the necessary turn of foot when second to In Love With Paris. Hopefully back to 1400m should inject more tempo and if that eventuates, I think she’ll take some beating.
1 In Love With Paris (Bet Now: $2.95) won that race mentioned above and it was largely down to a very slow tempo, which she sat on, and Harvey always had the filly in control of proceedings, and she never really looked in trouble from the home turn onwards. If she cops pressure in front, she’s vulnerable, but has class.
3 Arrum Boy (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Steve Wolfe trained three year old who should be suited by the rise to 1400m. Resumed over 1100m here two weeks ago where he sat back and couldn’t run on behind a potential star in Fabergino. Has a really good second up record, gets the claim for Kirby and should be around the mark with natural improvement.
Race 4. (16:24) Changing Lives Handicap (78+) 2100m
5 Middle Earth (Bet Now: $2.80) clearly on top for mine. Vaughn Sigley has this gelding going really well at the moment. Looked in a bit of trouble a fortnight back over 1800m here but when Carbery gave him clear air, he surged and won quite softly on the line. Up to 2100m is a big tick and he has a turn of foot, something that not many of these have.
3 At The Ready (Bet Now: $2.50) has been up forever it seems but continues to race really well. Ran over this track/distance last Saturday and didn’t have much luck at a vital stage but beaten quite convincingly by Mississippi Delta. Pike jumps on now, he’s hard fit, in form and should go close. Just not sure what upside he has.
2 Corporate Larrikin (Bet Now: $10.00) is the very interesting runner. Steps out to 2100m, which is a bit of an unknown and query given he doesn’t really attack the line, like we saw last time out over 1800m here in the Middle Earth race, but he should lead for fun I think and he will be in it for a long way I think.
Race 5. (17:34) Passages Youth Engagement Hub Plate 1000m
5 Pablo’s Poem (Bet Now: $3.60) looks a really interesting runner. Sean Casey trains this youngster, who is on debut and has looked outstanding in a couple of trials leading in, the latest coming last week over 1000m at Belmotn when bolting up and running time. Not much depth to this race and he clearly looks the one for mine.
9 Market Ruler (Bet Now: $2.15) is on the seven day back up for the Miller camp after racing here last Saturday where I thought Pike gave the filly every chance to run on but she bumped into a really good one I think in Black Sabbath. Bumps into Pablo’s Poem, who looks to have trialled better than Black Sabbath. Still, has race experience.
4 Play Hard (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Team Williams trained gelding who resumes. He debuted on New Years Day where he got back and just stuck on okay without setting the world on fire behind Assetro, who is one of the better youngsters in WA. Trialled up well a couple of weeks back at Lark Hill and always respect the stable.
Race 6. (17:40) Remelius Resources Trophy (1MW) 1400m
5 Kokopu (Bet Now: $3.00) looks the good thing on the program. First run for the Matthews camp at Pinjarra and he absolutely bolted in under Carbery, spanking his rivals, smashing the clock and reminding me of the WA early performances from the close relation and subsequent Group l winner Pounamu. Keen to see what he does.
1 Cash On Call (Bet Now: $4.05) was hard in the market when resuming here a fortnight back but if you were on, I think you knew you were in trouble on the turn. He had three wide cover, but Pike was continually niggling away and he didn’t let down at all behind Belter. If he brings his best, he should go awfully close for mine.
3 Toppa Dawozza (Bet Now: $35.00) resumed behind Kokopu in that race mentioned above and I’m willing to forgive him for that. He was in a tricky spot throughout and was wide, didn’t let down at all. Can pull out a decent run second up and interesting to note that Harvey remains on. Not sure he wins but perhaps one for multiples.
Race 7. (18:20) Vinnies Handicap (72+) 1200m
9 Show Honey (Bet Now: $4.30) on top. This girl is three weeks between runs for the Durrant camp since racing over 1000m here where she was an absolute tragedy beaten, getting badly held up behind tired runners when appearing to be bolting and it was an ugly watch behind Snow Lord. Up to 1200m looks ideal and Pike is on.
4 Art Series (Bet Now: $2.50) is a very good three year old who is first up here. This bloke hasn’t raced since the WA Guineas during the Carnival last year where he ran a brave third to star filly Perfect Jewel. Has an outstanding overall record and looks to have come back really well if the reent trial is any indicator.
5 Helms Gate (Bet Now: $18.00) could be the big improver. He comes through Belter race mentioned above and his run was a total forgive for mine. Got stuck wide no cover for the duration and did far too much work in a fast run race. If he can get a more economical run in transit this time around, he can bounce back.
Race 8. (19:00) Break The Cycle Of Homelessness Handicap (78+) 1500m
12 Senso (Bet Now: $6.50) for me in the get out. He resumed over 1400m here two weeks ago where he sat last in the small field and took forever to get going but his last 150m was quite good I thought behind War God. Fitter and up to 1500m are two big ticks and he remains right down in the weights for this.
2 Pinzu (Bet Now: $3.80) ran second in that War God race mentioned above and I thought his effort was quite good. He sat up outside the speed all the way and young Kirby looked to give him every chance but he just had no answers for the finale produced by War God. Kirby remains on and perhaps with cover, he’ll be more effective.
6 My Greek Boy (Bet Now: $8.00) is three weeks between runs for Steve Wolfe since racing over the mile here where nothing really went right for the gelding. He had the box seat run and everything looked swell, but he couldn’t get out in time and it was an ugly watch in the end behind Prize Catch. Won’t get caught in from the gate here and is a live threat.
