12/10/2019 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Morphettville, Durbridge Stakes day

Eight races will be run and won at Morphettville this Saturday where two blacktype races headline the program, the Durbridge Stakes (1200m) and Hill Smith Stakes (1800m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.

Up to 2500m should be ideal for the Michael Hickmott trained 3 Franked (Bet Now: $1.90). On the quick back up after racing last Saturday over 2250m on the Parks track where he looked in a bit of trouble on the turn but the last 150m, he really attacked the line and grabbed Dr Dependable right on the peg. He will appreciate more ground and is one of the leading chances.

Back up in trip should suit the veteran 2 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $3.00). He was coming back in trip last Saturday over 1950m on the Parks track and just lacked the speed in the legs to go with Jaguary, and the shifty track wasn’t to his liking. Hopefully gets firmer footing this time around and at this level against this depth of field, he runs well more often than not, so a must for exotics.

1 Aagas (Bet Now: $4.80) is another that will be suited up in trip. He comes through the Jaguary race mentioned above from last Saturday where he just found the distance shortage against him and couldn’t dash with the winner, who does look a progressive animal. Better suited on the bigger track and up in trip, plus he gets the claim for Jerry Chau, so he’s a chance here.

2 Jimmy Witha Dash (Bet Now: $2.45) is on top for me. Son of Jimmy Creed on debut for Will Clarken who has had jumpouts in readiness for start one, and I didn’t mind the way he has looked at each outing, going about his business nicely with something in reserve to the eye. Stable rarely produce a poor first starter, so keen to see what he does against this somewhat average bunch.

1 Flying Arion (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Phillip Stokes first starter that has had two trials in readiness for his debut, the latest coming last Thursday where he was back off the speed but found the line nicely enough under little riding from Crowther behind Just Zerene. Gets run of the race from the gate and overall, this looks a thin maiden, so he won’t need to be anything special to win.

8 Vali Rose (Bet Now: $21.00) had trialled up okay for Ryan Balfour prior to resuming at Gawler where she had good late market support but she let the punters down with a below par effort behind Newbay Flyer after getting a nice run in transit. She’s better than that and there was a decent market push first up, so I’ll be respecting that and seeing if the punters butter up again.

The rise to 1600m will be idea for 6 Star Status (Bet Now: $2.80), a handy four year old for the Macdonald/Gluyas team who resumed over 1400m here two weeks ago where he was back in the run but looked to find the line nicely late in the piece when third to Little Akie, a very surprising winner. Has a bit of quality on his side, which does make the 1/14 record not tell the full story.

5 Vahash (Bet Now: $4.40) is a son of Written Tycoon for the McEvoy team who won his first two starts in impressive fashion prior to racing over 1400m on the Parks track last time out where he was wide throughout, but had cover, and for mine had his chance when sixth to Dexter You Devil. That leaves me with a little query on him at the mile but on prior efforts, he’s in the mix.

12 Cool Fonzy (Bet Now: $11.00) on top. This bloke doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but gee he looks to be going well. He put them away to win with purpose two back at Gawler before racing over the mile at Murray Bridge where he was never really likely as a winning chance, but the last 50-75m, he was really good to the line and through it. If they go at a good clip in front, he’ll be one of the strongest late.

8 Kamien (Bet Now: $6.50) is a progressive son of I Am Invincible for the Gelagotis team who is looking for three on end. Handled the bog track best to break the maiden two back at Bairnsdale before racing on Benalla Cup Day when finishing off strongly and being lifted over the line under Maskiell. Bit of depth to this field, but have to like the way he’s going about his business.

2 Street Life (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Karen Byrnes trained gelding that a solid enough prep in Darwin before being freshened up and racing over this track/distance three weeks ago where he was relatively unwanted in betting but finished best to get the job done, and the form has been franked by More Than Exceed winning last Saturday. Creeping up in the weights scale, but hard to beat all the same.

6 Port Vale (Bet Now: $26.00) is a sneaky chance at odds for Stuart Gower. He ran over 1250m on the Parks track two weeks ago where he was slightly held up when having something to offer, so should have finished a tad closer, but at the same time, he had his chance when fourth to Kemalpasa. That form reads well for this and he does tend to save his best for the course proper.

I’ll be in the corner of 11 Raabeeha (Bet Now: $4.80) for the McEvoy team. This girl was disappointing first up at Geelong prior to being freshened up and racing in a 1600m maiden at Murray Bridge and it was the win of the meeting. Poured the pressure on early and made those behind chase. She was there to be run down but kept finding and was impressive. Noteworthy that she ran near five lengths quicker overall time than the B64 the same meeting, so that reads very well, and she has upside.

9 Raptures (Bet Now: $6.00) will run well here. She was good two back in the Morphettville Guineas before stepping back to maiden company where she was put near the speed and ridden to win. Showed good ticker late when challenged and got the maiden win out of the way at Geelong. Up to 1800m looks fine and will be more effective with a more conservative steer.

3 Sowpods (Bet Now: $26.00) has been pretty good this time in for Gordon Richards. Won the maiden in good style on Balaklava Cup Day before going to the 1550m on the Parks track two weeks ago when looking home when Tourneur pushed the button, but he couldn’t quite go on with it when third to City Beats. I think with a more conservative steer, 1800m should be okay.

If he’s the right odds, which he is, I’ll be betting up on 9 Shamino (Bet Now: $10.00), who is now with Phillip Stokes after formerly being with David Briedoake. Last run for Briedoake came in July at Sandown when down the track behind Tavisan. Now with Stokes, he won a jumpout at Strathalbyn before trialling at Murray Bridge last Thursday and was the standout, winning with absolute ease and going through his gears. If he runs up to the trials, he just wins.

4 Be My Star (Bet Now: $6.50) is a daughter of Zoustar resuming for Will Clarken. The McEvoy stable formerly trained this mare and she did show promise early on in her career and for the most part raced consistently at benchmark level in Melbourne. Now with Clarken and we know the record he has with tried horses. She has trialled well leading in, so the market will be the guide as to how forward she is.

13 Hello Gorgeous (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Gary Searle trained mare that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since July 13 at Gawler (Metro) when down the track on a day where being near the speed/rail was the spot to be and she was back/wide. Good fresh horse and liked the way she went in a recent Gawler trial. Was late market support when she won fresh last prep so that will be the guide again.

This looks a lovely race for 6 Carlaluisa (Bet Now: $5.50), who has returned in good style for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. Resumed with a fast finishing win at Gawler before racing over 1100m here when closing off well from off the pace to run second to Tiara Star. Jerry Chau is looking to break the city duck and has gone close a few times. I think his time will come here.

7 Despacito (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Team McEviy trained mare that resumes. This girl had a somewhat frustrating Winter prep where she threatened to string together some wins on the board but kept finding one or two better on the day. She’s a mare who tends to race best when fresh and there looks to be a bit of speed engaged here, so she’ll get her chance to finish over the top.

What’s doing with 10 Kenyan Wonder? (Bet Now: $7.50) She was one of the better progressive gallopers in Adelaide once upon a time but since her early 3YO days, she’s totally gone off the boil, and continued that trend with a most disappointing resumption at Murray Bridge. Her best would see her beat these, but it’s been a long time since she has showed that. Include her in exotics just in case the best version turns up.

Happy to butter up with 12 Schilldora (Bet Now: $10.00). Was in her corner when she ran in the Whylie three weeks ago and she ran a much improved race, sitting back and finding the line nicely to run third to impressive winner Soothing. She was disappointing in her opening two runs for the campaign but up in grade, she was much better last time, and a repeat effort will see her go close.

4 Kemalpasa (Bet Now: $5.00) is an absolute beauty for the Jolly camp. He’s had five runs this time in, winning four and placing in the other, the latest start coming two weeks ago on the Parks track when afforded a lovely ride from Toeroek and the gelding was too good late for stablemate Dexelation. Hardest test to date this prep, but he’s earned a crack at this level.

Don’t think 6 Arrow Lane (Bet Now: $23.00) has the class to win, but he’s certainly got the right racing pattern to be ultra competitive. He comes through the Whylie when wide with cover before being placed under pressure on the turn and was never really likely but kept chipping away and stuck on well to run sixth. If he can find the front here, he’ll take some running down at odds.
