A really good card of racing has been assembled for Doomben on Saturday, with a couple of types possibly pushing their case for a berth in the Winter Carnival. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out 4.5 metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (13:17) : Powering The Happy! Handicap 2200m:
Back Me: 3 Hi Son (Best Odds: $4.50) looks one of the better bets on the program. He was on the seven day back up when racing over 2000m here a fortnight back where he hit the front in the straight and looked home but was nabbed right on the peg by Explosive One. Looks perfectly placed up to 2200m and he should take care of them here.
Big Danger: 2 Outraged (Best Odds: $4.50) was a tough winner over 2200m at Eagle Farm before backing up a week later in the Explosive One race here where he got back in the run and tried hard but couldn’t quite reel them in and had to settle for fourth. He will love the rise back to 2200m and rates highly here for sure.
Long Shot: 8 Surface Tension (Best Odds: $10.00) hasn’t set the world on fire in three runs this time in, but he is getting out to a trip now that suits and has the Lloyd factor. Ran over the mile at the Sunny Coast last Sunday where he got back in the run and just stayed there behind I Feel Good. Crying out for further which he gets here, and I think he is a knockout chance in a small field.
Race Two (13:57) : Nothing But Fun! Handicap 1350m:
Back Me: 5 Lady Lark (Best Odds: $5.00) is a well performed filly for the Desleigh Forster camp who looks one of the hardest to beat here. She ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where she sat near the tempo throughout and took the lead soon after straightening but was just no match late for Pah Terie. Confident she can turn the tables here and that is the right form race.
Big Danger: 4 Eminent (Best Odds: $6.00) resumed over 1200m at the Sunny Coast a couple of Sundays back where he sat just off the speed and when Cahill gave the colt clear air, he put them away and ended up scoring a comfortable victory. Ran well in the Spring here, so I am confident he can measure up here.
Long Shot: 6 Pinch Passion (Best Odds: $9.50) just looked to over do it somewhat near the pace in the Pah Terie race here two weeks ago but despite that, he fought on really well to run fourth, beaten two lengths. If he can bring better racing manners here, and perhaps get cover, he will take some beating here.
Race Three (14:32) : Jump To The Rocket! Handicap 1110m:
Back Me: Taking a chance on 3 Londehero (Best Odds: $7.00). Quality sprinter that resumes for Matty Dunn after a really good Winter/Spring. Can sprint well fresh and looks to have come back in really good order off a lovely trial effort at the Gold Coast. Speed will be hot, so he will get his chance to run on.
Big Danger: 6 Divine Centuri (Best Odds: $4.20) was first up since May when racing on her home track at the Sunny Coast where she sat near the speed and looked to travel well but her condition just gave out late behind Limerick Moon. She can certainly improve off that and rates highly. Leading contender.
Long Shot: 1 Steel Zip (Best Odds: $11.00) is a greybeard who is racing very well despite his age. He hasn’t raced since late January when contesting the Sunny Coast Cup. He looked to travel well and looked to win the race but he couldn’t quite run the 1400m out. Freshened up, and he will be strong late, so giving him respect here.
Race Four (15:07) : Hiflow Industries High Fives! Handicap 2030m:
Back Me: 1 Ahndras (Best Odds: $3.80) is a very promising filly for Toby Edmonds who looks the clear horse to beat here. She hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing over the mile here where she looked in a spot of bother on the turn but once she balanced up, she really savaged the line and grabbed victory in the final couple of strides. Gives the impression she’ll handle it, and she does have the class factor.
Big Danger: 6 Pegapus (Best Odds: $31.00) rises in trip quickly but has shown a bit of promise early on for the Morrisey camp. She ran over 1690m against the older horses last Friday where she sat outside a genuine tempo and despite being beaten on the turn, she fought on really behind an in form mare in Capetown Hussey. She can measure up here for sure with a more patient steer.
Long Shot: 14 Miss Arabella (Best Odds: $71.00) rises in trip/grade but she could be the upset horse here. Comes through a Lismore maiden over 1500m last time out where she was a heavily supported odds on pop but she just had no hope via the ride, stuck wide no cover for the trip, and at Lismore, that’s suicide. Shown in her efforts prior she is a likely type.
Race Five (15:47) : Loads Of Laughter Handicap (75) 1630m:
Back Me: 11 Capetown Hussey (Best Odds: $10.00) is a mare in ripping form at the moment for the Steve O’Dea camp. She ran over the Ipswich mile last time out where she was heavily backed late and justified the faith of the punters with a dominant win despite not being entirely happy on the tight circuit. She will be much better suited here and should take some shopping.
Big Danger: 9 Old Habits (Best Odds: $14.00) is a quality galloper when he is on song and I think he could be a force here with the right run. Ran over the mile at Eagle Farm three weeks back and made up good ground in the inferior part of the track behind Raffinato, who failed with excuses last week. Been a while since he has won, but if the breaks go his way, he can definitely win this.
Long Shot: 3 Time To Torque (Best Odds: $12.00) will love the rise in trip after running over 1350m here a fortnight back where he got a mile back in the run and finished off with real purpose behind Craiglea Wandoo. Extra trip here should be ideal, and if he can sit closer in the run, he will take some beating here.
Race Six (16:27) : Sky Thoroughbred Central Handicap 1350m:
Back Me: 3 Siegfried (Best Odds: $3.10) is a Toby Edmonds trained galloper in ripping form at the moment. His last two starts have come over this track/distance, the latest coming a fortnight back when hitting the front and showing fight but was no match late for the Group l performed Cylinder Beach. No Cylinder Beach here, and he looks the clear horse to beat in his current vein of form.
Big Danger: 2 Jopa (Best Odds: $7.50) is a beauty for the Heathcoate yard. He has contested the same two races as Siegfried and has been really good each time out, the latest resulting in a fourth to Cylinder Beach where he sat off the pace and tried hard but was no match. Third up now, so he should be ready fitness wise and he does look the key threat.
Long Shot: 6 Best Of The Rest (Best Odds: $19.00) resumed over 1050m here two weeks back after 14 months away from the game. Despite that long break, I thought he ran really well behind Pinch River, and was making ground late. Second up after a long break could mean he may race flat, and his second up stats aren’t great, I am prepared to take the gamble.
Race Seven (17:12) : Weddings At BRC Plate (Class 3) 1110m:
Back Me: 7 Forbidden Kisses (Best Odds: $4.40) ran over this track/distance last Wednesday where she was confidently backed by the punters and that faith was rewarded in its bucket loads with a spank job of her rivals, and she had been promising to do that for a little while. Now that she has, she can go right on with it.
Big Danger: 17 Hot Gossip (Best Odds: $11.00) is a handy mare for the Sears camp who is just finding it hard to win a race, but despite that, she is racing very well. She ran over 1000m at Eagle Farm a couple of Wednesdays back where she got back in the run and was off the bit a fair way out, but picked up and was strong late when a narrow second to Noor Dropper. Up to 1110m looks ideal and rates highly here.
Long Shot: 2 It’s Vegas Baby (Best Odds: $18.00) isn’t the best weighted horse here given his record compared to others engaged here, but he is a pretty consistent gelding at the provincials for the Mel Eggleston yard, the latest at Ballina where he tried hard but had to settle for a narrow second to Destiva. If he had a claim, I’d be more warm on his chances, but senior rider booked…stable confidence? This is a wide open race and it’s hard to rule out anything.
Race Eight (17:50) : Giddy Up Plate (Class 6) 1200m:
Back Me: 14 Havasay (Best Odds: $4.00) can be a hard horse to trust, but he is clearly knocking on the door to win a race. Ran a real eye catcher in the QTIS race on Magic Millions Day behind Madotti before running in a Class 3 over 1350m here four weeks back where he just got too far back behind Heartbreak Harry. Freshen up should do him the world of good, draws well and is down in the weights.
Big Danger: 13 Courtza King (Best Odds: $3.50) had support at odds when resuming over 1110m here two weeks ago and he was expected to run well, but gee the turn of foot he produced was just electrifying, gunning down the Stakes performed Dreams Aplenty to win impressively. Potential is that he might race flat off that brilliant effort, but I’ll take the gamble.
Long Shot: 7 Lucky Tom (Best Odds: $19.00) is the very interesting runner here. Quality galloper when he is on song, so he is the watch horse here for mine. Ran twice during the Summer, both times finishing down the track behind Most Important. Not the greatest of first up records, but he has finished behind the likes of Royal Occasion and even Kuro.
