Some really nice three year olds will kick start their Golden Rose aspirations when they step out in the feature at Rosehill this Saturday, the Rosebud (1100m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:00) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1100m
I’m going to side with 7 Jetgirl (Bet Now: $3.20). The Dean Mirfin team is going quite well at the moment, and this mare is in career best form. Bolted up to win her maiden two back at Dubbo before going to the 1100m at Bathurst and she was outstanding in spanking her rivals by nearly seven lengths and smashed the clock relative to the day, like she did at Dubbo. She’s a specialist sprinter who looks well placed here.
2 Table Mountain (Bet Now: $3.20) is a son of Animal Kingdom resuming for the Paul Messara. The stable wasn’t far off recently in a Highway with a resuming Rekindled Force and this bloke looks set up to run well. Showed good promise in his first prep, winning two and placing in three from seven starts. Trials leading in have been quite good.
4 Missed Out (Bet Now: $18.00) could indeed be the knockout chance. Tough winner two back on the Acton track at Canberra prior to racing at Wyong where he took on some nice types and had no luck at all in the straight when looking to build momentum. Scratched from an easier race at Moruya on Tuesday in preference for this.
Race 2. (12:35) Fairfield RSL Club Handicap (78) 2000m
It’s a throw at the stumps but I’ll go with 6 Fireman Sam I Am (Bet Now: $15.00). Tash Burleigh has this horse going really well at the moment and comes to town off the back of a tough all the way win at Kembla last time when ridden a treat in front by Louise Day. Hippo takes over now and I expect this horse to jump straight to the front and give a great sight.
7 Nicci’s Gold (Bet Now: $3.60) is on the quick back up for the Gary Portelli team after racing over 1800m last Saturday at Randwick against the mares, where if you were on, it was a tough watch. Could make a case that she perhaps should have won but hard to say definitively. Off that, 2000m should be okay and fitness won’t be an issue given how deep into the prep she is.
1 Quick Defence (Bet Now: $9.00) could be a knockout. Hasn’t done much this time in, but I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off in the event won by Raqeeq a fortnight ago, making up ground very late nearer the inside to run fifth. Rarely wins, so I think brave if you back him to win, but I think include him in exotics.
Race 3. (13:10) St Johns Park Bowling Club Handicap (80) 1500m
4 Island Missile (Bet Now: $3.50) is on the quick back up for the Snowden camp after racing over 1400m at Randwick last Saturday where I thought he had his chance to reel them in but just took that little bit too long to wind up when third to Bergerac. He’s looking for the mile IMO, so 1500m immediately looks okay.
Strike while the iron is hot here in the shape of 1 Bergerac (Bet Now: $5.00), who won that race mentioned above and really it was down to a lovely steer from Michael Murphy, who had him up on speed and with the light weight he found plenty to cling on and win. At the weights, I’ll be surprised if he beats Island Missile but runs well regardless.
6 Imanui (Bet Now: $13.00) could be one to include in wider exotics. Stiff not to finish closer two back behind Laussel prior to racing over 1900m at Canterbury where I just don’t think he ran the trip out with the weight behind Trafalgar. I like him back to 1500m and this is the first time in a while he’s getting down in the weights.
Race 4. (13:45) Dooleys Handicap (85) 1400m
Would love the track to have some give in it, but even without that, I have to be with 6 Mandylion (Bet Now: $9.50). Gwenda Markwell trains this mare, who resumed three weeks back over 1400m at Randwick where she carried a gut as big as mine, clearly with improvement to come, but despite that, she was on speed and showed great fight when pipped late by Irithea. Should come right on from that, maps well…if the track had any juice, I’d declare her.
8 Sweet Scandal (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Chris Waller trained mare showing good promise, winning three of her four career outings. Admittedly, I don’t think she’s been beating much but you can only beat what’s put in front of you and she’s done it nicely enough. Has to tick the 1400m box now, and the rise in depth, but a mare in form always has to be respected.
1 Domed (Bet Now: $14.00) is a talented staying mare resuming for John Thompson. She was a tease for the most part in the Summer/Autumn but did get a win on the board and ended up placing in the Epona. Trialled last week over 1200m at Randwick and I thought she went great in closing off to run third under minimal pressure. Look for her late.
Race 5. (14:20) Campbelltown Catholic Club Handicap (94) 1100m
If he doesn’t give away too much start and is close enough on the turn, 3 Sir Plush (Bet Now: $21.00) is certainly good enough to beat these. Was on him when he resumed at Randwick three weeks ago and for mine his run was quite good against the bias, warming to the task nicely before his condition gave way. Good record at the track/distance and is one of many leading hopes.
9 Trekking (Bet Now: $2.25) is a son of Street Cry resuming for the James Cummings yard. He hasn’t raced since March 28 at Warwick Farm when loving the drop in grade and bolting up to get a much needed confidence boost. Tipped out and I’m a fan of horses ending a prep with a win. Good fresh horse and trialled lovely last week at Randwick.
1 Dal Cielo (Bet Now: $15.00), on form and class, looks hard to beat. I have doubts about him at a strong 1100m, but I think as he’s getting older, he’s relaxing a bit more and is finishing off his races better, as we saw last start at Randwick when second to impressive winner and stablemate Tactical Advantage. Up in the weights, but has class, should park off the hot speed and prove a threat.
Race 6. (14:55) The Rosebud 1100m
I’m going to side with 9 Ringerdingding (Bet Now: $17.00) in what looks a tricky but pretty good edition of The Rosebud. This son of Sebring had a pretty good Autumn Carnival even though he only won a Rosehill maiden. Contested some quality races and was far from disgraced. Loved his recent trial win at Randwick, clocked fast time and looks ready to go fresh.
8 Charge (Bet Now: $6.00) is a son of Zoustar that is up and running already for Chris Waller. Resumed in a Warwick Farm maiden last Wednesday and he absolutely bolted in under a lovely front running steer from J Mac. Promised a fair bit during the Autumn without winning. Now his confidence is up, he can measure up.
Looking for 2 Outrageous (Bet Now: $15.00) to get back and flash late. Class wise, he’s the best horse in the race by a mile. Just first up at 1100m, where will he get to, and is he forward enough to beat some sharp types. Just brings one soft 700m trial under the belt, but no denying his class, with some suggesting he should have won the Sires during the Championships. Look for him to be charging late.
Race 7. (15:35) Premiers Cup Prelude 1800m
I’m hoping the bookies missed the run of 11 Salsonic (Bet Now: $14.00) when he resumed in the Winter Challenge a fortnight back behind Mister Sea Wolf. Never looked likely of winning given how the track played, but his late splits for a horse clearly wanting the run were outstanding. Up to 1800m is perfect and if he can sit closer in the run from the draw, I think he only runs well.
10 Carzoff (Bet Now: $3.00) could be a real improve here third up. He ran over 2000m here a fortnight ago where he looked to have his chance to my eye but just ran out of puff late when fourth to stablemate Raqeeq. I reckon back to 1800m with serious weight relief is an ideal recipe for him to go close against these.
Old mate 4 Liapari (Bet Now: $14.00) could surprise a few if they overdo it in front because there are a few runners who like to push forward. Won the Civic two back before finishing down the track in the Winter Challenge. Distance no issue, but I feel he’s more effective at the mile and a touch shorter. But the good lead here is Bowman rides, and he rides the horse well.
Race 8. (16:15) Spring Preview Handicap 1400m
I’m bordering on being the CEO of her fan club, but that aside, 13 I Am Serious (Bet Now: $4.80) is a very good horse. Formerly based in Taree, she’s had a couple of preps now for Chris Waller, the latest seeing her race four times for two wins, the latest on June 9. Stable could have easily kept her going down the Winter prep path, but they freshened her up with the Spring in mind, and for mine that’s the pointer that the stable think she’s blacktype quality, which I’ve been saying since day one, and her recent trial was outstanding.
The class of this race, and by some margin, is 1 Prized Icon (Bet Now: $8.00), who resumes for Kris Lees. His Autumn campaign, despite not winning, was very good I thought, with the clear highlight being a second to Winx in the Chipping Norton, albeit seven lengths away. Tough draw for the resumption, but there looks to be real intent for a first up forward showing based on the trials.
I reckon 12 Old North (Bet Now: $12.00) is working towards a win, but may just need one more. Still, hard to ignore his resumption over the 1200m here a month back when warming to the task late behind Albumin, clocking some of the fastest late splits of the day. Trialled up well last week behind Siege Of Quebec. One more I think, but he goes in everything.
Race 9. (16:55) ClubNSW Handicap (81) 1350m
7 Paret (Bet Now: $2.80) does look one of the better bets on the card. Chris Waller trains this bloke, who looks to have turned the corner since being gelded. Eye catching resumption behind Star Of Monsoon before a Bowman peach got him home a fortnight back over 1400m here, running away late after saving ground on the turn. Back to 1350m no issue for mine and has plenty of upside left.
1 Star Of Monsoon (Bet Now: $5.00) has really transformed his career since being gelded, winning three races since the operation. He ran in a hard 1200m race here a fortnight back and just couldn’t quite see it out late when third to Eusebio. I reckon that hard six furlongs will toughen him right up for this 1350m assignment.
11 Gitan (Bet Now: $18.00) is one to include in exotics I think. He’s a Highway specialist but now has his confidence up after a pretty good win over 1400m at Randwick three weeks ago in a Highway where he had the suck run behind the speed, and yes aided by bias, but he still proved too good. Welcomed weight relief and a hard 1350m won’t be an issue.
