The Brisbane Winter Carnival reaches its climax this Saturday at Eagle Farm where it is Stradbroke Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:43) Oxlade Stakes 1300m
5 Metallicity (Bet Now: $4.20) has been a money muncher for punters but I do feel that he deserves one last chance on top of the ground. He’s been disappointing in three career outings, but each run has come on wet ground, and I don’t think he’s been effective. When he trialled up like a jet prior to start one, it was on dry ground, so that’s why he gets one last look.
1 Calgary Stampede (Bet Now: $7.50) is suited back in trip for Team Snowden. Ran in the Sires two weeks ago where he tried hard but I just don’t think the seven furlongs is his go in life when down the track behind Sheeza Belter. Back to 1300m I like and form around him reads pretty well.
3 Allude (Bet Now: $31.00) can improve big time back in trip and back in grade/depth. 1400m of the Sires was not his go two weeks back and failed to fire a shot behind Sheeza Belter. This looks more his go in life. I do think 1300m is a slight query but off the first up win, he’s a knockout hope.
Race 2. (12:18) The Wayne Wilson 1600m
2 Kirwan’s Lane (Bet Now: $4.00) will love getting to firmer footing and in a winnable race. Hawkesbury Cup winner three back before a couple of runs where he has been held, but far from disgraced, the latest being two weeks ago at Randwick behind Art Cadeau. Up to the mile again, he’s a key winning chance.
1 Scallopini (Bet Now: $4.20) was far from disgraced in the Kingsford Smith two weeks back. Not sure G1 WFA suited him, but he ran very well all things considered, especially with a race shape against him behind Apache Chase. This looks more his level, and he brings the strong form lines.
4 Kubrick (Bet Now: $6.50) is on the seven day back up for Chris Waller after racing here last Saturday where he ran his race in patches. He lost sight of the bunny and looked to be struggling at one stage, but came again and was quite good to the line and through it. Always like Waller horses on the back up.
Race 3. (12:53) Brisbane Cup 3200m
If you can trust 4 Sweet Thomas (Bet Now: $4.60) and what he produced two weeks ago, he’ll just win this. Close up in the Gosford Cup before going to the Premiers Cup and really, he should have won, but had zero luck at a vital stage, surging hard late to just miss. Very good 3200m record and last start showed Eagle Farm is fine.
6 Through Irish Eyes (Bet Now: $3.90) has been in work a little while but is still racing in good form. He tried his guts out in the Andrew Ramsden in what was a brutally run 2800m, and while he was safely held by Point Nepean, he was far from disgraced. That has to read well for this.
7 The Fearless One (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Kiwi with good promise. He ran in the Premiers Cup and closed his race off strongly from the back wehn a close up third to Splendiferous. Unknown at two miles but his last two runs, both at 2400m, suggest, that the rise to 3200m will be no issue.
Race 4. (13:28) Gunsynd Classic 1600m
3 Battleton (Bet Now: $4.20) looks ready to win for Bjorn Baker. Good late fresh at Gosford before going to the Fred Best when wide throughout and I loved the way he kept finding the line in defeat when a close up third to Vilana. I think 1600m should be fine and third up, he should be at peak fitness.
1 Kiss Sum (Bet Now: $3.30) is a horse of some promise. Tracey Bartley trained three year old that charged from last in the Fred Best nearer the inside, just missing out on picking up Vilana. Yet to tick the 1600m box but he’s racing as if the mile will be ideal and is a key winning chance.
6 Holstein (Bet Now: $51.00) is a Matty Dunn trained three year old that will put himself on speed and try hard. He’ll love getting away from the Sydney mud tracks where he has struggled to pick his feet up, the latest at Canterbury behind Wild Chap. Doubt he wins, but a first four threat.
Race 5. (14:03) Hinkler Hcp 1200m
1 Tycoonist (Bet Now: $4.50) is knocking on the door to win again. Clear air, he wins the BRC Sprint two weeks ago but he had no luck in the straight and pretty much went to the line under a hold. I think he’ll love the fast run 1200m and with room to move this time around, he’ll take beating.
5 Ranch Hand… (Bet Now: $3.60) is he back? Jury was out on him but he turned up a few weeks ago here over 1400m and he made a mess of them after getting a good sit off the speed with cover. He’s always promised to be a really good horse…is the Brisbane Winter where he can shine?
2 Southern Lad (Bet Now: $20.00) can give this a shake. Forget he went around fresh in the Takeover Target at Gosford before coming back to 1100m at Randwick and just found them a bit sharp but was solid late behind Surreal Step. Reckon now he’s had the 1100m run under the belt, it should hold him in good stead.
Race 6. (14:38) The Q22 2200m
3 Huetor (Bet Now: $3.30) is a class animal and will eat up 2200m. Lovely ride from McEvoy saw him win the Doomben Cup, finishing off his race with real purpose and drove hard late to win and win well. He was only third up, so you’d like to think there is petrol in the tank and has the runs on the board.
I think 2 Kolding (Bet Now: $20.00) will run a beauty. He ran a closing second in the Lord Mayors Cup two weeks ago, finishing off nicely behind Bigboyroy. Unknown at 2200m, but he thrives on firmer footing, he’s got upside to come I feel and if he can settle near the speed, he’ll only run well IMO.
6 Great House (Bet Now: $9.50) is a key winning threat. He got a fair way back in the run in the Doomben Cup and worked to the line very nicely when fourth to Huetor. That’s two runs at 2000m now so hard fit and getting to 2200m, plus J Mac steering, there is plenty to like.
Race 7. (15:13) JJ Atkins Stakes 1600m
10 Sharp N Smart (Bet Now: $4.40) is a talented colt for Team Rogerson that is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday in The Phoenix where he got back but Bowman gave him a peach and he surged hard late to just miss out on picking up Political Debate. He has the upside to come and will eat up a mile. Hard to beat.
Been a fan of 9 Owen County (Bet Now: $13.00) since day one and won’t be dropping off here. He’s had three career outings, the latest being a strong win two weeks ago at Randwick when finishing off with purpose on the bog to win and win well. He could be even better on top of the ground, not sure, but each way, happy to speck him.
6 Brosnan (Bet Now: $20.00) brings strong #SF form so he commands respect. Seven weeks between runs after a Sydney Autumn prep when racing over 1400m at Flemington where he was ridden a treat by McNeil and class got him home. The way he has raced, he’ll eat up the mile and does bring relatively fresh legs.
Race 8. (15:53) Stradbroke Hcp 1400m
4 Eleven Eleven (Bet Now: $6.00) is flying for Greg Hickman. He was good late fresh in the Ortensia before going to the Kingsford Smith and really liked the way he warmed to the task late in the piece when a close up third to Apache Chase. He tends to save his best for Queensland and third up at 1400m looks such a good set up.
I’m very, very wary of 18 Startantes (Bet Now: $19.00), especially with 50kg. Her racing pattern is horrendous but more often than not, these three year olds run well in the Stradbroke. Just got a mile out of her ground in the Fred Best and was in restricted room in the straight. Her last 100m was nothing flash, but right down in the weights, good speed, she’ll launch late.
10 I Am Superman (Bet Now: $21.00) looks set up to run very well. Comses here with fresh legs, having not raced since the Victoria Handicap at Caulfield back on April 16 when down the track behind Ayrton. He does meet that horse 3.5kg better here, and for mine, the prep has been better for him to run well, and he saves his best for 1400m on firmer footing. Each way for me all day.
Race 9. (16:28) Dane Ripper Stakes 1300m
Have to be with 15 Najmaty (Bet Now: $2.60). She is back and back to her best I feel, with the key being finding firmer footing. She got that in the Helen Coughlan two weeks ago here and the end result was an electric finale to win and win well. She’s got more to come and the extra 100m should be fine.
3 Written Beauty (Bet Now: $9.00) is flying for Chris Waller. Lovely rides from Pike her past couple, winning the Bright Shadow two back before getting a mile out of her ground in the Helen Coughlan and was good late behind Najmaty. I think a rise to 1300m suits and hard to beat if she can settle closer in the run.
1 Vangelic (Bet Now: $11.00) has eyes on the Tatts Tiara and has the WaterBott polish so she commands respect. Hasn’t raced since the Queen Of The Turf during The Championships where she was game in defeat behind Nimalee. Two trials to get ready have been solid and with her racing style, she’s suited on this track.
