The course proper at Morphettville will play host to a pretty strong program of racing this Saturday, where it is Morphettville Guineas Day. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out two metres from the 1200m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race One (13:08) : Orange Spot Bakery Handicap (64) 1050m
Back Me: 2 Our Gladiator (Bet Now: $3.60) was smashed in betting when resuming at Corowa, opening up double figures with some corportates before starting $3.20 and the three year old filly saluted impressively. Form out of that has been been okay, and senior rider jumps on now in a relatively thin race. One to beat.
Big Danger: What you see is what you get with 1 Arrow Lane (Bet Now: $4.60). He is an absolute beauty who is never far away from the action. He ran last weekend on the Parks track where he looked the winner most of the way down the straight but was outgunned late by a potential Melbourne visitor in Serenely Discreet. He’s hard fit, in form and should take some holding out.
Roughie: 7 So You Too (Bet Now: $4.60) resumes here for the Macdonald/Gluyas yard after two runs in the Autumn, both of which were in quality races. Bred to perhaps get a trip, so I think whatever he does here he will improve on, but his trial win here on Friday was solid enough to suggest he could run a cheeky race fresh.
Race Two (13:43) : Olivers Pets And Plants Handicap (82) 1050m:
Back Me: 2 El Prado Gold (Bet Now: $5.50) hasn’t won for a long time, but he gets his chance here. He ran in the Sprint on Balaklava Cup Day and worked home well with purpose behind Brimarvi Prince. Draws to get a soft run behind the tempo, hard fit, well weighted…ticks the boxes.
Big Danger: 6 Classy Jack (Bet Now: $5.00) ran in the feature Sprint race on Balaklava Cup Day and like most, he really struggled on the bottomless surface. His form prior was very good, and on firmer footing here, down in the weights, I think he could sharply improve.
Roughie: 3 Pistolier (Bet Now: $6.00) hasn’t raced for nearly 11 months for Richard Jolly but he did have really good form when last in work. Despite that gap between outings, he did look sharp in a trial win here on Friday, and the time was solid enough. Not a known first up performer, but I’d keep an eye on the market.
Race Three (14:23) : LUCRF Handicap (80) 1200m:
Back Me: 8 The Castle Kat (Bet Now: $13.00) for me here. She was luckless here three back behind Ravens Fire before going back to the provincials where she did an enormous job at Gawler before getting the job done impressively last week at Murray Bridge. Been up for a while, but is racing so well and strikes a very winnable race.
Big Danger: 2 Miss Adele (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented mare that is first up for John Hyam. Very capable when she gets conditions to suit and she did look sharp in a trial here last Friday, an indicator that she looks ready to run a beaut race fresh. If there is a market push, I am on.
Roughie: Really good to see 1 Tidy Prophet (Bet Now: $6.00) back at the races after a very good Summer/Autumn prep, with the highlight being a game sixth in the Adelaide Cup. Her best form is over further, but her recent trials have been quite encouraging and she can sprint well fresh.
Race Four (14:58) : The IGA Handicap (90) 1600m:
Back Me: Putting a bit of faith in 10 Distant Rock (Bet Now: $6.00) because we know he can be a money muncher, but his last start effort at the Valley behind the heavily backed Grand Dreamer was full of merit given he got a fair way back in the run and was then held up a touch on the turn when appearing to have plenty to offer. Been knocking on the door to win and I think he gets his chance here.
Big Danger: 4 Victory Downs (Bet Now: $4.00) comes through the Balaklava Cup last Wednesday where he got back to near last in the run and made up a stack of ground late to finish under two lengths away from the winner, Little Akie. The step back up to the mile is perfect and a repeat of that last start effort will see him take some beating here.
Roughie: 3 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $15.00) is another that comes through the Balaklava Cup and he was one horse who didn’t appreciate the drop back in distance but he stuck on very well and was under two lengths away. He has a really good record at the track/distance and should be a threat.
Race Five (15:38) : Hyland Race Colours (90) 1200m:
Back Me: 7 Heza Ripper (Bet Now: $3.00) looks the way to go here. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight ago and showed plenty of ticker when strongly challenged to cling on for a very tough and determined victory. Looks to be a touch more depth here, but he is hard fit and in ripping form. Hard to beat.
Big Danger: 2 Dr Dapper (Bet Now: $21.00) is a handy sprinter that is first up. He hasn’t raced since December where he scored a super win on the Parks track over this distance before being tipped out. Comes here with no trials, so fitness levels are unknown but the stable have a really handy strike rate. Market watch.
Roughie: I think the watch horse is potentially the Valley specialist 6 Solsay (Bet Now: $31.00). He ran at that track three weeks back and had no luck at all in the straight behind Just Magical in what was a really messy race. He hasn’t done a great deal for a long time, but this is the easiest race he has contested for a couple of years, so he could be a sharp improver.
Race Six (16:18) : National Jockeys Trust Series Final (70) 1200m:
Back Me: 5 Murti (Bet Now: $6.00) was a dominant winner over this track/distance five weeks ago before racing on the Parks track last time out, where quite frankly, he was given a horrendous steer, missing the kick before being hunted forward and sitting three/four wide no cover throughout. He is better than that and with normal luck here, he can bounce back big time.
Big Danger: 15 Golden Century (Bet Now: $5.50) has been given a four week break since racing on the Parks where she ran her usual honest race when fourth to Marco Polo, who has run well since. She has a real liking for the course proper, and she has reacted previously to the four week gap between outings.
Roughie: 17 Cash Is Coming (Bet Now: $11.00) is a bit of a tease, but she does look a contender here. She has been freshened up since racing here on August 6 when a close up fourth behind Raven’s Fire. The claim for Poon is a big tick given she only carries 51kg. She draws to sit with cover and ambush late.
Race Seven (16:58) : Goldin Farms Morphettville Guineas 1600m:
Back Me: I think there is value in the shape of 9 Smart As You Think (Bet Now: $6.50). The filly resumed over 1400m at Caulfield a fortnight back and was luckless in the straight when running fifth to the above average Leotie. She looked to travel well in the run but just couldn’t get a clear run in the straight to build up any momentum. Suited at the mile second up, and there are no Leotie’s lining up here. Has enormous upside and should take beating.
Roughie: 3 Cannalasso (Bet Now: $4.20) cruised in on debut at Echuca before going to Sandown where he sat on speed and was brave in defeat when running a game third to Urban Ruler, beaten 1.5L. 1300m to the mile looks ideal for this Darren Weir runner, and you always have to respect the great man when he sends runners to Adelaide.
Big Danger: 4 Silvera (Bet Now: $6.50) debuted at Mildura on August 19 and gee he looked impressive to the eye, bolting up to win by a space with some confidence in betting late to back it up. The other good lead is that he ran the fastest 1405m race of three for the meeting, and one of the other winners of those 1405m races won on Monday, so the form reads so well.
Race Eight (17:33) : UBET Handicap (64) 1600m:
Back Me: Going with 16 Mandana (Bet Now: $10.00) in the last. His last four runs have been on Synthetic tracks, his last two at Pakenham, resulting in a maiden win and a game second to Vibrance. Has to translate it to the turf, but stable is flying and this is a thin race.
Big Danger: 4 Dreadlock (Bet Now: $3.90) resumed on the Parks track over 1300m on August 13 and was simply dreadful behind Marco Polo (has run well since) after being well fancied in the market. He couldn’t pick his feet up, so perhaps forgive and forget, because his efforts when racing in NSW was strong.
Roughie: 8 Power Glen (Bet Now: $16.00) ran on Balaklava Cup Day and worked home okay late without threatening when running fourth to Municipality, beaten seven lengths but far from disgraced. He loves a track with give in it and he will be strong late.
BEST BET: Race Six Number 5 Murti
NEXT BEST: Race Five Number 7 Heza Ripper
VALUE: Race Three Number 8 The Castle Kat
