Nine races will be run and won at Belmont on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:43) Go Racing For Free Maiden 1400m
She’s bursting to win a maiden 7 Diamond Trade (Bet Now: $3.00) and I think she gets her chance here. The Harvey stable trains this mare, who was a month between runs when racing over 1200m at Pinjarra last time, getting well back off the speed but producing an excellent and eye catching finale to run a narrow second to Locklear. Up to 1400m, fitter…really likeable here, but I will say she’s been supported her past few and not won, so patience is wearing thin.
6 Amillionite (Bet Now: $3.40) is another knocking on the door to shake loose of the maiden tag but she just keeps finding one better, finishing runner up at her past four outings, the latest at Northam over 1400m when given every chance by Pike but had to settle for second to Polite Pass. She’ll knock a race off eventually, but from a punting perspective, she’s hard to trust.
5 Cable Guy (Bet Now: $21.00) is an interesting runner. He comes through the Polite Pass maiden at Northam over 1400m where he was back off the speed and niggled at a fair way from home, but kept chipping away and made up some ground very late in the race, suggesting he wants further, so remaining at 1400m is a little niggle, but he’s only having start three, so you’d like to assume there is a stack of upside.
Race 2. (14:22) Westspeed Platinum Handicap (0MW) 1300m
I’m keen on 6 Tramontane (Bet Now: $2.60). He trialled sensationally prior to resuming over 1200m at Pinjarra where he led all the way and like the trial, he bolted up and ran really good time relative to the afternoon in winning his maiden. Like that he comes straight to town, suspect he’ll bounce on the bunny and roll, I think he’ll take a stack of beating against this lot.
1 I’m Pretty (Bet Now: $4.40) is a daughter of Dash For Cash for Adam Durrant that’s in a real purple patch, winning her past two in impressive fashion. Latest came over this track/distance last Wednesday when heavily backed and under Pike, the mare proved too good for her rivals. Has been up a fair while but gee she’s racing well and has to be rated highly.
4 Fairtrusive (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Dan Morton trained mare who was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1200m here two weeks ago where she was just off the speed and battled away pretty well I thought behind Free Trade in a race which clearly had more depth than what she faces here. Not the greatest of second up records, but compared to first up, this is a very winnable race.
Race 3. (15:02) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Plate 1000m
This will be a decent training effort from Dion Luciani if 2 Amarillo Rose (Bet Now: $3.20) can win first up here. All four of her career outings have come at 1000m and here she is first up at the trip off a decent break, but she does have a touch of class/quality on her side having contested a lead up to the Karrakatta at her last outing where she was a tired horse and finished down the track. Trials have been good…finds a winnable race.
6 Massimo (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Sessions gelding for Adam Durrant that makes his debut. This three year old has had just the one trial in preparation for start one, which saw him in solid time over the 950m at Lark Hill under Jade McNaught. Always wary of the Durrant first starters because they usually come out and flop or produce an outstanding. One to watch from a market POV.
3 Rubic Rose (Bet Now: $5.00) is a daughter of Rubick resuming for the Karen Kersley stable. This girl hasn’t raced since the Karrakatta when wide no cover on speed and fading out of the finish after doing that amount of early work. Been given a good break and has trialled up well in readiness for her return and given her record, I think she’s very well in at the weights.
Race 4. (15:42) Bernard Couch Memorial Handicap (1MW) 1000m
9 Shinju (Bet Now: $3.20) gets his chance to win. Chris Gangemi trains this four year old, who has placed in both runs back from a spell. Ran a close up third to Glasgow Girl first up before racing here again two weeks ago where he tried hard but was no match for the brilliance of Essential Spice, who franked that form last Saturday, so it all points to Shinju only running well.
5 Metro Boy (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Dan Morton trained four year old who has been quite good in both runs back from a spell and is knocking on the door to win a race. Narrow second t Glasgow Girl first up before racing at the track/distance two weeks ago when leading and Noske tried to hold on for as long as he could to press the button but he couldn’t quite finish it off. Last 50m will test, but third up, he should be ready re fitness.
6 Murray The Bulldog (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Lou Luciani trained gelding that resumes. This five year old hasn’t raced since April 3 over 1500m at Ascot when running a game second to High Tea after setting the speed and rolling at a good clip. Normally needs a run or two before finding his best, but interesting to note he resumes without a trial, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 5. (16:22) Prive Fashion Platform Handicap (64+) 1200m
I reckon 6 Fairview (Bet Now: $4.40) is a really good each way gamble here. Sean Casey trains this mare, who was good late fresh over 1200m behind Cryptic Love before stepping back to 1000m where she was back and run off her legs but made up ground at the end behind Essential Spice. Looks like she’ll appreciate 1200m, which is what she gets here, and she did win impressively third up last prep.
2 Little Fish (Bet Now: $5.00) is a son of Patronize resuming for the Peter Fernie stable with eyes towards the Hannans at Kalgoorlie I’d say. He raced five times during the Autumn and only missed a place once, which was the last run of the campaign where he ran a tiring fourth to Settler’s Creek. Resumes without a trial, but usually sprints well fresh and has a touch of quality.
10 Stable Secret (Bet Now: $51.00) could be one to include in multiples at odds. Brad Graham trains this galloper, who was wide no cover on speed when racing over this track/distance last Wednesday and the gelding just faded late in a pretty gutsy run. Draws much better this time around and gets good weight relief. Not sure I could back him to win, but he goes in the quaddie.
Race 6. (17:03) John Martino 90th Birthday Handicap (70+) 2000m
Going to go for some value in the shape of 12 Spiritual Warrior (Bet Now: $16.00), who is racing for the fourth week in a row. He ran here last Saturday where he was a bit one paced but found the line okay late behind Here Comes Lenni. Like that Paul Harvey takes over, a genuinely run 2000m will be right up his alley and at around $20, I think he’s worth an each way ticket.
5 Mr Alby (Bet Now: $5.50) is going really well at the moment for Paula Wagg. Well beaten but gutsy fourth in the Swan River Vase before stepping back in depth/grade last time out and he finished best in a tight go to get a well deserved win. He’s the sort of horse that once he finds positive form, he generally holds it. Bit of depth to this field but have to like the way he’s going.
11 Rebel Knight (Bet Now: $12.00) is having his first crack at 2000m but gives the impression he’ll handle it okay. He ran over the mile at Pinjarra just over two weeks ago where he chased hard, running down a tearaway leader to nab it late and be strongest on the line in a pretty good effort given it’s not easy to chase a leader like that and win. Gets the claim for Azzopardi, he’ll be thereabouts.
Race 7. (17:40) Ascot Racing Carnival Handicap (76+) 1600m
13 No Say In It (Bet Now: $8.00) looks ready to win third up from a spell. Lindsey Smith trains this gelding, who has had two runs back from a spell, both at this track/distance. Latest came two weeks ago when getting a suck run nearer the inside and finding the line nicely to run third to Double Digit. Third up, he should just about be ready fitness wise and looks one of the hardest to beat.
5 Friaresque (Bet Now: $13.00) took an absolute eternity to win another race but he finally did it four weeks ago at this track/distance when chasing hard in a real slog to the line and finishing best in a race where The Velvet King threw it away by veering out. He saves his best for Belmont and how often do we see these horses that struggle to win then when they do, they repeat the dose soon after.
6 Missile Launch (Bet Now: $17.00) should just about be ready. He’s third up here and I was on him last time out at big odds and I thought he was there to win on the turn when peeling out of the 1/1, but just struggled on the genuinely wet track when a close up seventh to Double Digit. With firmer footing, I can see this son of Smart Missile running a much improved race.
Race 8. (18:20) Mark Shreeve 50th Birthday Handicap (64+) 1600m
David Harrison has 5 Snowchino (Bet Now: $4.00) going great guns at the moment. This mare has won her past two over 1400m here, the latest coming three weeks ago when near the speed before Whiting clicked her up and she put them away rather quickly for a dominant win. Love the way she’s going about it at the moment and don’t see a reason to jump off her.
Plenty to like about the way 6 The Fugazi (Bet Now: $2.00) has gone about his business this time in. He was heavily backed when racing over 1400m here two weeks ago and aided by a nice sit just off the speed, class came to the fore and he put them away to win impressively. Harder here and drawn tricky, but still looks to have some upside left and is one of the hardest to beat.
1 Reveille (Bet Now: $10.00) is an Adam Durrant trained mare that trialled up well prior to resuming over this 1400m here three weeks back where she was back in the run before McNaught saved ground nearer the inside, saving several lengths, and the mare found the line well to run third to Snowchino. Think she’ll be a bit better over further, which she gets here, and have to like the resumption.
Race 9. (19:00) Crown Perth Handicap (1MW) 1400m
Something at value in the get out in the shape of 6 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $17.00). Thought he was good first up behind Spirit And Fire before racing behind The Fugazi last time when wide no cover on speed in a total forgive. Gets good weight relief after the claim for Kate Witten and the depth here is nowhere near as strong, plus draws better, so I think he’s definitely the value.
3 Distant Trilogy (Bet Now: $2.70) is racing in super form at the moment for the Tom Widdeson stable. Won here impressively over 1200m four back and in three subsequent runs, he has done a good job and hasn’t been beaten far, the latest coming two weeks ago behind The Fugazi. Should get a lovely run just off the speed and like that Harvey is sticking with him.
The overall record of 12 Blackwood River (Bet Now: $11.00) is pretty grim reading, but his best is certainly good enough to beat these. He had market support when resuming at this track/distance two weeks ago but was never really in the hunt behind The Fugazi, settling near last in the run and staying there. Had trialled up well prior to that, so giving him another chance.
