The Ascot racing season in Perth kicks off this Saturday with a strong nine race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:34) TABTOUCH WESTSPEED MAIDEN 1400m
8 Wednesday (Bet Now: $4.80) looks a progressive mare for Cliff Green and up to 1400m at start three in her career, I’m leaning her way. Ran over 1200m at Belmont two weeks and took a while to get into her work, but was strong late when second to impressive winner Devil’s Dust. Like her up to 1400m and finds a winnable maiden.
6 Lord Lonsdale (Bet Now: $2.90) is a son of Maschino for the Kieran McDonagh camp that is resuming. This gelding resumed at Pinjarra back in December and worked home gamely without really threatening when fourth to Endovanera. Very sharp trial winner at Belmont last week and stable is starting to fire as the Carnival approaches.
2 Miami City (Bet Now: $5.00) is bursting to win a maiden for Brett Pope. Has placed in all three career outings, the latest coming at Belmont when tucked in behind the speed and tried quite hard when second to Treasured Crown. He looks to have his share of ability and will win a maiden soon. That win could well come here.
Race 2. (16:14) SCHWEPPES INITIAL PLATE 1000m
3 Rommel’s Command (Bet Now: $7.00) looks a good mover for the Martin Allan team. Hard to get carried away with 400m trials, so not sure how much of a guide they are, but from the 24 odd seconds I saw of this guy, he looks a nice type. Won the trial, did it nicely enough and draws soft for his debut here, so he’ll do me.
4 Send It Son (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Snippetson for the Pearce camp. He has had two trials to get ready for start one, both coming over 400m at Lark Hill, winning the second trial by a decent margin and looked to move well under Chris Graham, who remains on for the debut. Keen to see how he goes against these.
5 Crowned Princess (Bet Now: $18.00) is one I’d keep an eye on as a knockout chance. Julie Mitchell trained filly that has had two trials to prepare, the second trial over 1000m where she got back and closed off really well under not much pressure. Hasn’t got the brilliance of some of these, but think she will be strong late.
Race 3. (16:54) AMELIA PARK HCP 2200m
Not easy for a horse to win four straight in town but I reckon 4 Bonneville Black (Bet Now: $3.20) can indeed do that. Fred Kersley has this stayer going super at the moment, winning his past three at Belmont, and what has impressed me each time is that when he has been challenged, he has showed good ticker late to fend them off and win. Think he can win again.
2 Mackenzie Brooke (Bet Now: $3.60) looks hard to beat here for Adam Durrant. This mare is third up, so she should just about be at peak fitness. She was down to run in the Kalgoorlie Cup last Saturday but would have been seven days between runs so stable scratched to tackle the softer option here. The run behind Leading Girl was just fair, so keen to give her another chance in a weaker race.
1 He’s A Parker (Bet Now: $6.50) has a touch of class about him and the rise to 2200m looks perfect, although straight to the trip from the mile is a slight query. He ran over the mile at Belmont last time out and was good late when third to the very talented galloper and subsequent Hannans winner Money Matters. He’ll go close…just not sure if he needs the run.
Race 4. (17:33) SEPPELT WINES HCP 1600m
10 Truly Great (Bet Now: $2.00) looks one of a number of Bob Peters runners that could be on the Perth Cup path. Whatever race he is being set for, I think he can kick the prep off with a win here. Progressive galloper who is lightly raced given he’s five years of age yet is only having start eight here. Hasn’t raced since July 25 when giving his rivals a galloping lesson over 2200m at Belmont before being spelled. Has trialled up very well leading and he’ll do me here.
What’s 8 Mafeking (Bet Now: $10.00) doing here. Kieran McDonagh trained galloper that comes out of a maiden win straight to a 72+ race, a strong 72+ race. Was the maiden win impressive? It was good, but nothing special hence why I find him a fascinating runner here and will be interesting to see what the market does.
6 Adornment (Bet Now: $9.50) is a talented staying mare for the Adam Durrant camp that resumes, another that likely has eyes towards the Perth Cup. She last raced over 2100m back in April here when a solid fifth to Black Shadow, beaten just over a length. Trial suggests she might need the run, but she has a touch of class/quality.
Race 5. (18:10) BYRON BAY PREMIUM LAGER HCP 1400m
4 Inspirational Girl (Bet Now: $1.80) on top, just. Team Williams trained mare that resumed over 1400m at Belmont three weeks ago and was one of the runs of the day from the back when a closing third to Patristic, producing some of the best late splits of the meeting. If she’s within range on the turn, think she’ll be too good.
7 Spillinova (Bet Now: $7.50) will put himself on speed and prove hard to run down, which was the case when an impressive winner at Belmont a fortnight back, getting control from the front and he gave nothing else a look in. 1400m looks ideal for him and if he was to get an uncontested lead again, he’ll be a worthy threat.
9 True Attraction (Bet Now: $6.50) is a very interesting runner. Talented five year old that resumes for Adam Durrant. He hasn’t raced since winning the 2019 Aquanita Stakes back in July of that year, so over 14 months between runs. Two trials to get ready have been solid enough so I think watch what the market does with him.
Race 6. (18:45) CROWN SPORTS BAR HCP 1500m
4 Expressionist (Bet Now: $3.60) is on the seven day back up for the Williams camp after racing last Saturday at Belmont over 1200m, his first run in two months. Just got too far back but loved the way he closed off, clocking some of the better late splits of the meeting. Can sit much closer in the run from the draw, up in trip and senior jock takes over.
9 Devoted Star (Bet Now: $9.50) looks the key threat. She was six weeks between runs when racing over 1200m at Belmont a fortnight ago where she was back near last in the run before peeling wide and launching late, producing really good closing splits until the last 200m where her condition just gave out. Fitter, up to 1500m, she’s likeable.
1 Rebel Knight (Bet Now: $14.00) can be a big improver here. His first up run at Belmont was quite plain, but he was wide throughout and market said he was no hope, being a notable drifter. The thing though that helps his cause is that he is an Ascot horse. Some can handle one track better than the other, and clearly this guy has a preference for Ascot.
Race 7. (19:20) CROWN PERTH 3YO CLASSIC 1000m
1000m is short of her best, but gee I reckon 7 Queen Brown (Bet Now: $19.00) is loaded with talent and to me, she seems like a filly who could be one that could run well in a Kingston Town with the featherweight, so I’m keen to see her resume. Put the runs on the board at the end of last prep, showcasing blacktype quality. Decent enough trial to get ready and maps super from just off the speed.
Just how good is 6 Clairvoyance? (Bet Now: $1.65) She’ll need to be every bit as good as she is made out to be given she’s drawn wide and there is plenty of speed drawn underneath, but she won with arrogance in all three career outings and showcased ability to suggest she is a Stakes winner in waiting. Keen to see how she goes.
9 Nuhad (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Dream Ahead filly for the Simon Miller camp that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since June 13 when pretty ordinary to the eye, but was found to be slow to recover post race, so there were excuses for her. That followed an impressive debut win, and has trialled well to get ready for her return. Knockout chance.
Race 8. (20:00) CROWN TOWERS HCP 1000m
16 Real Grace (Bet Now: $3.40) looks the pony to bet on here. Carnival time is just around the corner and that means that the Cerise & White are a force to be reckoned with, with this mare looking quite progressive. She resumed over 1000m at Belmont and bolted up from off the speed, producing some of the best late splits of the meeting. Keen on her here.
15 Chantorque (Bet Now: $4.40) is a talented filly that resumes. Could have resumed in the previous race but is dodging Clairvoyance to tackle the softer option. Good promise was on display in her first prep, winning on debut before a close up second then was spelled. Sharp trial win a couple of weeks ago and looks ready to go.
9 Horizon (Bet Now: $41.00) is 2/2 third up so he commands some form of respect. Needed the run first up before racing at the Belmont 1200m again and I thought he worked home quite well from the back when third. Not sure he’s got the ability to beat Real Grace, but the pattern is there to suggest this is the run he’ll peak.
Race 9. (20:38) THE MERRYWELL HCP 1200m
6 This’ll Testya (Bet Now: $3.90) on top for me. She’s four weeks between runs for the Adam Durrant stable since racing at Belmont over 1000m when sitting on a very fast speed and tried her heart out. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when second to the highly talented Bob Peters runner Long Beach. That form reads very well for this.
1 Cliffs Of Comfort (Bet Now: $5.50) will put himself near the speed and give his all. Three weeks between runs since racing in the Nicopolis at Belmont when leading and giving a really good kick when nabbed late by the very much above average Celebrity Queen. Likely leads this field up and if he can get a cheap furlong or two, he’ll be hard to run down.
Good little test here for 12 Point Taken (Bet Now: $27.00) but Jim Taylor has her going super at the moment in easier races. Ran over 1200m at Belmont two weeks go and was a real eye catcher when closing from the back to run third to Don’s Legacy. Her record at Ascot isn’t too flash but hard to knock the way she’s going at the moment.
