1/3/2025 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Ascot, Marjorie Charleson Classic day

Nine races has been set down for Ascot this Saturday for Marjorie Charleson Classic Day. Weather is fine, track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.

5 Kay Tee Why (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top in what looks an open contest. Adam Durrant trained gelding that debuts, having not raced since a debut at Albany on Nov 28 when off speed and worked home strongly, just missing out on the win. Resumes without a trial but good lead that Pike is booked. That’s enough for me.

4 Ginger Morpheus (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has done little wrong in a two start career and commands respect for Michael Lane. Both career outings have come at Bunbury, being a narrow second on debut before a spank job maiden win last time, justifying a big weight of support. Keen to see how he goes.

1 Keep Ita Mystery (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should be suited back to 1000m after racing over 1200m last time in the Magic Millions at Pinjarra where he just found it a bridge too far behind Smooth Chino. Back miles in grade/depth and back to 1000m, he’s a definite improver and can win without surprising.

11 Memphis Minx (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks a nice filly for Simon Miller and I think she can make a winning debut. She has had two trials to get ready for start one, looking in need of the hitout first time over 400m but looked much better when stepping up to 1000m last week. Looks a good mover and happy to be in her corner.

3 Eye Of The Fly (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Universal Ruler that is on debut for Gary Crispin. He had a Spring prep with two trials but no run. Spelled and has had two trials this time in to get ready, each time moving well enough to my eye. Good grounding for the debut and strikes a winnable race.

9 Jewel Of Zavala (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of Written Tycoon for Dan Morton that debuts. She has had two 1000m trials to get ready for start one and has been pretty good each time she has stepped out, the latest seeing her run fourth. Draw is tricky but I’d watch the market.

1 Captain Pluto (Bet Now:  $SP.00) takes beating off the back of an electric first up win over 1400m at Pinjarra two weeks ago. He gave them a start and a beating, letting down with purpose late to win and win well. He only has upside/improvement to come, I think good luck beating him.

3 Zephyra (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a key threat. She resumed behind Captain Pluto a fortnight back where she was near last in the run and made up a stack of ground late in an eye catching return when fourth. If she can settle closer and be within range, she’s dangerous.

4 Above The Peg (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes through the Captain Pluto race from two weeks back at Pinjarra. He had the suck run in behind and seemingly had his chance but was a bit on the plain side late in the piece. That was his first run for Michael Lane so with improvement, he could pinch a first four spot.

3 Stylish Lord (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday at this track/distance. He got into a decent spot near the speed and was there to win but just couldn’t quite get there when a close up third to Axeman’s Jazz. Hard to knock the way he’s racing and strikes a winnable race.

4 Covert Rose (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have returned well and should appreciate a rise to the mile after resuming over 1400m at Bunbury. She landed on speed and looked the winner when asked for the effort but had to settle for a second to Elbow Lounge. Like her up in trip and I think will be more dangerous with a patient steer.

2 Special Sort (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. He ran over 1300m at Pinjarra last time out where he got off speed and while he was never a winning threat, he kept finding the line and was pretty good in defeat I thought behind Chino La Diva. Like him up to 1600m and has good upside.

6 Terratif (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the straight bat play here for me. Team Williams trained mare that resumed over 1200m here where she got a fair way back but I really liked the way she closed off late in the piece behind King Adviso. Upside/improvement and up to 1400m, she takes beating.

1 War Gem (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is four weeks between runs since resuming over 1200m here when landing on speed and seemingly had his chance but just felt the pinch late in the piece behind Just Saint James. Good track/distance record and his best is more than good enough.

10 The Chief Justice (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one at odds I could entertain. Yes, he beat nothing at Kojonup but he won by a space and ran decent time. He hasn’t been too bad in town previously and has a good racing style. First four contender.

2 Bold Hero (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be given another chance. He ran two weeks at Pinjarra but it was pretty much a barrier trial. He got shuffled back behind tired runners, lost all momentum and was never really a factor from that point on in a total forgive. Prior efforts were impressive and off those, he can bounce back into the winners list.

9 Starating (Bet Now:  $SP.00) ran fifth in the race mentioned above at Pinjarra, that was won by Stormageddon. She got too far back but I really liked the way she closed off in defeat. The big tick for me re her is that the stable books Pike, so it’s go time.

6 I Love You Smile (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks an improver for Luke Fernie. First run for the stable came behind Stormageddon. She got back in the run and was held up at times but kept finding the line and was good in defeat. That was her first run in six weeks so she has upside/improvement.

6 Wango Award (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a quality mare for Team Williams that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since Oct 12 over 1400m here when back off the speed and kept finding the line in defeat behind a quality mare in her own right, Diamond Scene. She is better suited over further but has trialled up very well for the return and gets Pike on.

3 Generosity (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is first up for Simon Miller and is dangerous. She ended last prep on a high with a track/distance win, giving them a start and a beating in an electric performance. Love horses that go out on a high because they come back in similar form and her trial win to get ready was very good.

4 Brave Strike (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of Brave Smash that is first up for Simon Miller. Her last run last prep was a second over 1300m at Belmont behind Mama Tembu when off speed and worked home well enough. She does go well fresh and has trialled nicely for the return.

2 Our Mate Archie (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for me. This gelding has done little wrong this time in and has to be respected off the back of placings his past two, both over 1400m here. Latest run came three weeks ago when near the speed and fought hard but had to settle for a second to Fluro Neuro. Good racing style and back to 1200m, he rates highly.

8 Lost City (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1200m for Team Williams. She resumed over 1100m here four weeks ago where she just looked in need of the run and failed to get involved behind At Your Service. Unbeaten second up and fitter, up to 1200m, she’s in the mix.

5 Catch The Red Eye (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has found winning form and he can go on with it. That win came at Bunbury where he welcomed the drop in grade/depth and bolted up in impressive fashion. His confidence is up as he comes back town and should prove hard to hold out.

11 Shmoov Moova (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks the winner if 1400m is fine. He got too far out of his ground in the Magic Millions two weeks ago but I really liked the way he closed his race off in defeat behind Smooth Chino, clocking the best late splits of the race. Can settle much closer in the run…the only query is just the two week gap after that hard run race.

7 Gi Gi Pops (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has done little wrong in a five start career and commands respect. She ran last Wednesday at Belmont after attempting to lead throughout and tried hard but just couldn’t quite get there when second to Premium Girl. Lands in front and will take running down.

4 Cashel Palace (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a knockout hope after resuming in the Magic Millions at Pinjarra. She too got a fair way out of her ground but her finale was quite good in defeat behind Smooth Chino. If she can settle closer and be within range, she can launch late.
