As records were smashed day after day at this 2025 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale, it was top Japanese trainer Mitsu Nakauchida who on Friday won an international bidding battle.
In securing her Home Affairs-Sunlight filly on a final bid of $3.2m, she topped Thursday’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale record price of $2.8m for the Snitzel-Humma Humma colt, from Widden Stud.
“Mainly I came here for this filly and I just arrived yesterday,” a delighted Nakauchida said “as I was just lucky to secure the filly as physically she is good and you cannot fault the pedigree.”
“I’m very happy as I expected to pay a high price and it is a little bit more than the budget but I hope the filly is worth it, so she will go back to Japan and hopefully will make a nice racehorse.”
“I’ve been lucky to have had success with Australian mares as I have Liberty Island out of Yankee Rose and a very good 3yo in Eri King out of Youngstar, so Australian mares do well in Japan.”
“That is what you dream of” said Coolmore’s Tom Magnier, who purchased Sunlight as a broodmare prospect at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, was thrilled with the result.”
“A new record price for a first season sire in Home Affairs, so it is great for him, but we can’t do this without our partners when you have a mare like that and a filly like that, she fantastic.”
“She has been the talking point of the sales all week, really you can’t pinpoint the exact figure you’d get but Mitsu is one of the great trainers around the world and of course a great judge.”
The Book One section of the 2025 Gold Coast Yearling Sale rounded out with a gross of over $205.4 million with an average price of $272,507 and clearance rate of over 81 per cent.
“We had a great ending to the sale and our vendors knew that before they supported the sale with a gross of $205 million that exceeded expectations and a healthy 81% clearance rate.”
“An average of $270,000 is fantastic as we would have taken that and ran at the start of the week, so it’s an exceptional average which includes 13 one million dollar horse and the Sunlight filly setting a new Magic Millions record,” concluded Magic Millions General Manager Barry Bowdich.
