The Melbourne Cup is on the agenda for Royal Diamond following his superb run in Saturday’s Ebor at York.
He was beaten just a neck by Godolphin’s Willing Foe in a thrilling climax to Europe’s richest handicap.
The six-year-old joined Irish trainer Tommy Carmody from Jonjo O’Neill earlier this year and arrived at York having won once and been placed on three other occasions this season.
Tim Jones, racing manager for owner Andrew Tinkler, said the Melbourne Cup had been in their thoughts for some time.
“We were absolutely delighted with him,” Jones said.
“He’s in the Irish St Leger and I think he will be given an entry in the Melbourne Cup as that race has been an option for him all year.
“That’s on the table if we decide to go that way, but we’ll see.”
“It sounds strange to say a six-year-old is progressive, but he does seem to be getting better all the time.
“Everyone will have a proper discussion about what we’re going to do with him.
