Melbourne Cup favourite Red Cardinal has finished fifth in the Group Two Prix Kergorlay at Deauville won by English horse Marmelo.
Trained by Andreas Wohler for Australian Bloodstock, Red Cardinal was taken back in the field by Eduardo Pedroza early in the 3000m-race on Sunday (Monday AEST).
He made ground to be fifth inside the final furlong (200m) but made no further impression on the leaders.
Marmelo is trained by Hughie Morrison who won the race last year with Nearly Caught who finished fourth.
Wohler trained Protectionist who won the race in 2014 before going on to win the Melbourne Cup.
