Trainer George Boughey is one of the UK’s most upwardly mobile trainers. He’s graduated from just four horses when he started in 2019 to a 100 box yard and has trained two Guineas winners in the space of 7 years.
His move in early 2025 to Craven House stables in Newmarket, a yard previously owned by Godolphin and a rare equine property sale for that operation, gave Boughey the facilities he needed to expand but also brought with a weight of pressure. That pressure has now been eased to a significant extent by the meteoric career of his star horse Bow Echo who followed up his win in Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas with a battling success in the St James’s Palace Stakes, the feature race on the opening day of Royal Ascot 2026.
Bow Echo faced 5 rivals, his chief threat being the horse who finished second to him at Newmarket, Aidan O’Brien’s Gstaad. Gstaad looked to have improved from Newmarket when winning the Irish Guineas next time out and was a strong 2/1 second favourite to Bow Echo here.
The race proved controversial. Front runner Puerto Rico, a stablemate of Gstaad, drifted off the rail as the runners entered the straight, opening a gap for Gstaad to go up the inside rail and causing inconvenience to the horses on his outside. Puerto Rico’s jockey Christophe Soumillon was subsequently banned for 8 days.
It’s not the first time team tactics involving runners from O’Brien’s Ballydoyle stable have caused eyebrows to be raised and on this occasion it looked a fairly blatant case of one horse being ridden simply to ensure the smooth passage through the race of another.
As they entered the straight Bow Echo was forced to come widest of all with his run. His young jockey Billy Loughnane, another whose career is on a fat-track trajectory, still had plenty of horse and hit the front at the two furlong pole.
It looked like he might run away from them at that point but Gstaad wasn’t done with and he began to battle back in the final furlong, gradually whittling away at the length Loughnane had in hand. At the line there was only a short head between them but Bow Echo had held on and took the prize. Charlie Appleby’s Talk Of New York ran a big race back in third, a length and three quarters behind Gstaad.
Jockey Loughnane was keen to point out that things had not gone entirely to plan in the race.
“Bow Echo was then lit up and I was just trying to manage him and get him back in behind. Then Power Blue came back into our lap. That meant I had to come out and move a little bit sooner than ideal, but his guts got him through. He’s determined to win and is blessed with a fantastic turn of foot and a lot of ability.”
Boughey was relieved after the race, also conceding that the race hadn’t panned out the way they’d hoped but he also praised Bow Echo’s battling qualities.
“It’s the first time he’s been in a real battle and it was great that he was equal to it,” said the Boughey. “Bow Echo was more exposed than ever today. He had to come wide and I’m just so pleased we were on the right side of it; it’s huge.”
He nominated Goodwood’s Sussex Stakes as the next target for his talismanic colt and if Gstaad also turns, as seems likely, up we’re in for round three of what has now developed into an absorbing rivalry.
