23/3/2025 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Sha Tin, Hong Kong Derby day

A bumper ten event card has been set down for Sha Tin this Sunday for Hong Kong Derby Day, with the 2000m feature being an intriguing race on paper.

2 Forerunner (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the one to beat. He is several weeks between runs since racing over this track/distance when back off the speed but worked home strongly late in the piece behind Magnificent Nine. If he’s within range, he has the finale to take this out.

4 Top Dragon (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has had three career outings to date, all over 1200m here, and is racing like a rise to 1400m suits. Latest run was on Feb 16 when off speed and worked home quite well late in the piece when second. Extra 200m should be fine and is one of the key chances.

7 Fortune Boy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) ran fourth in the 1200m race mentioned above from Feb 16. He got a fair way out of his ground but you had to like the way he finished his race off in defeat. Tick over trial was good and off last run, 1400m should be fine.

3 Packing Hermod (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes back to 1400m after racing over 1800m in the Classic Cup where he was taking his shot towards the Derby but didn’t quite run out the trip. Blinkers on, back in trip, back in grade/depth…keen.

6 Dancing Code (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when off speed and kept chasing with purpose in a good effort in defeat behind Young Champion. Gets in really well after the claim and is a key threat.

7 Snowfield (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. He showed really good promise when racing in Brazil…the problem is horses from that part of the world struggle away from there, especially here, but his trials have been encouraging so watch betting.

7 Sky Deep (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top for me. He comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since a Jan 31 when attempting to lead throughout and he did give a strong kick from the front but just couldn’t quite see it through when second to Brilliant Express. Trial work since has been good, good racing style, hard to beat.

2 Spirit Of Peace (Bet Now:  $SP.00) hasn’t raced since Feb 16 at this track/distance where he got a fair way out of his ground but you had to like the way he finished his race off in defeat behind Master Of All. He’ll be spotting them a start but should be strong at the end and can win.

10 Happy Shooter (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has an engine under the hood I feel. He hasn’t quite fired in three career outings but his last couple, I reckon he hasn’t liked being tight between runners. Hopefully drawn out, room to move, he can wind up and finish over the top.

1 Enjoy Golf (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is bursting to win and I think he gets a great chance here. His recent racing has has come down the straight where he has been gallant but has kept finding one better. If the breaks go his way here, from a good draw, he’s hard to beat.

2 Yee Cheong Spirit (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has done his recent racing over 1200m at Happy Valley and I think getting to Sha Tin will be ideal. He got a fair way out of his ground last time but closed with purpose behind Great Spirit. He’ll spot them a start but be strong late.

7 Majestic Delight (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Unite And Conquer that is on debut for David Eustace. He has had extensive trial work to get ready for start one and for the most part, hasn’t been too bad to my eye, so watch betting and see what it does.

4 Armour War Eagle (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has found winning form and he can go on with it. That win came over this track/distance two weeks ago where he got into a good spot off the speed before angling clear and knuckled down with purpose late to win and win well. Hard to beat against these I say.

3 Tamra Blitz (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is knocking on the door for Douglas Whyte. He ran over this track/distance a few weeks back and loomed large to win after getting a nice run but just found one better in Brilliant Express. Only has to hold his form and he’ll be around the mark.

2 Pope Cody (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very, very interesting runner. He was looking every bit a QLD Derby horse but Hong Kong came in with a big offer and he is here, I dare say with a long term look at the Derby next year. 1400m is on the short side but the trial work has been solid and Jimmy Orman clicked with him in QLD, and he rides him here.

7 Sky Vino (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top in what looks an even contest. He got his maiden win out of the way at Happy Valley last start, winning over the mile after getting a positive steer by Bowman, who sticks here. Tricky draw to overcome but with intent from the outset, I say he’s a key chance.

4 Master Trillion (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m here where he got a fair way back in the run but got clear air in the straight and worked to the line strongly in defeat when fourth. Racing like 1600m suits and Moreira sticks.

11 Gale Saga (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a definite winning chance. He had his first look at the mile two weeks back here and I thought he was one of the real eye catchers of the race, closing hard after settling near last. If he can get a drag into the race and be within range, he will be dangerous.

6 Packing Angel (Bet Now:  $SP.00), I think, has to be given serious respect. He was 1400m to 1800m and several weeks between runs when contesting the Classic Cup. He got a 12/10 ride from Moreira and was there to win but just couldn’t quite get there and finish it off when fourth. He is the one with upside and has to be given serious respect.

1 Rubylot (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the one to beat. He gave them a start and a beating to win the Classic Cup last time out, getting better as the race went on and was quite dominant on the line. As he has stepped up in distance, he has got better and better so with that in mind, he’s the one they have to beat, and clearly.

9 Cap Ferrat (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is still a maiden after 16 starts but that doesn’t truly reflect the talent he has. He comes through the Classic Cup where he got a peach run in transit but just lacked the change up speed. I think with a more patient steer, a bunny to chase, he’ll be strong late and is a must for exotics.

4 Pakistan Legacy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top for me. He hasn’t raced since Feb 23 at this track/distance when attempting to lead throughout and he gave a strong kick from the front but just couldn’t quite see it through when fifth to Triumphant More, beaten a couple of lengths. Trial since has been strong and does get Moreira on.

3 Masterofmyuniverse (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when off speed and worked home well enough in defeat behind Fast Network. Tick over trial last week was solid enough to my eye and despite the gate, has to be given respect.

1 Lady’s Choice (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will land on speed and run an honest race, as seen three weeks back over 1400m and tried hard but just felt the pinch late in the piece. Back to 1200m I like and his best is good enough to be dangerous.

4 Magnifique (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks a good prospect for David Hall and confident he makes it 3/3 to start his career. His latest run was Feb 16 over this track/distance when landing on speed and was trucking before being clicked up and away he went to win and win well. Good test here against likely types but confident he measures up.

3 Triumphant More (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the key and I dare say only threat. Three weeks between runs since a track/distance win where he lobbed into a beaut spot just off the speed before angling clear and knuckled down with purpose late to win and win well. Hard to beat once again.

7 Basic Instinct (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Former Kiwi that makes his Hong Kong debut after formerly being with legendary trainer Kevin Myers. He did show good promise when racing in New Zealand so it will be interesting to see how he goes here. Trial work has been extensive, watch betting.

12 Solid Win (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the each way speck for the meeting IMO. He ran over 1400m here a few weeks ago where he got too far out of his ground but you had to like the way he closed his race off in defeat behind Brilliant Express. Racing like 1800m will suit and he is right down in the weights.

3 Pray For Mir (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been runner up his past two and is knocking on the door. Latest run was over 2000m here three weeks ago when landing on speed and was there to win but just couldn’t quite see it through when a narrow second to Entrusted. Tricky draw but hard to knock the way he’s racing.

1 Senor Toba (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a knockout first four contender. His better days are likely behind him but I do think, at times, he hasn’t been too bad. He has a good track/distance, will be strong late and gets a big jockey upgrade.

NEXT BEST: Race Seven Number 1 Rubylot

LONG SHOT: Race Ten Number 12 Solid Win
