A bumper ten race card has been set down for Sha Tin on Sunday for International Day. The weather is fine and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:25) Maurice Hcp (c2) 1600m
This meeting is traditionally a good launching pad for key Hong Kong Derby aspirants and a key horse heading that way is 6 Senor Toba (Bet Now: $SP.00), who was good late at his Hong Kong debut two weeks ago over 1400m here, closing off with real purpose. He showed when he was with Waller he was going to be a potential star. Whether he wants further already than the mile, not sure, but he has class.
8 Cobhfield (Bet Now: $SP.00) is another that is heading toward the Derby. He was a real eye catcher at his Hong Kong debut, which came over 1400m at Sha Tin when third to Master Hero after getting a mile back in the run. Can settle much closer this time around and is hard to beat.
2 California Ten (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver back in trip. Just got too keen in the run last time over 1800m here and tired late after using the petrol tickets early to find a spot. Dominant win the start prior and off that, he’d be in the mix here. Just depends what is left in the tank.
Race 2. (15:55) Beauty Generation Hcp (c4) 1400m
4 Super Mission (Bet Now: $SP.00) clearly on top for me. He’s flying this time in. Has forced to be dragged back from wide gates in both runs this time in but has really caught the eye each time with his finale. Has a good gate to use, settle closer in the run and gets a key jockey booking of Ryan Moore.
Interesting to see if 6 Good Runner (Bet Now: $SP.00) can use the inside gate to advantage. He has gotten a mile out of his ground in all three career outings, but first up was his best run to date when a fast finishing second. If Purton can get him to settle near the speed, he’ll take beating.
Not sure 8 HK Dragon (Bet Now: $SP.00) wins but I can entertain him for exotics. Resumed over a month ago over this track/distance where he got a suck run from the inside gate and battled on okay despite seemingly getting every chance. He’ll do no work once again and can fill a first four spot.
Race 3. (16:25) Jim And Tonic Hcp (c3) 1800m
5 Champion Dragon (Bet Now: $SP.00) the one to beat. Another that was purchased from overseas with eyes towards the Derby, this one from the UK. Last run over there was at the Royal Ascot Carnival. Debut here was two weeks ago over the mile and he was good from the back when fourth to Soulmate. Can sit a pair or two closer in the run and for mine, only runs well.
3 Entrusted (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a consistent animal that is rarely far away from the thick end of the prize. Badel produced a peach on him to win here last time and the run was timed to perfection, just getting the win on the line. That was 2000m. Back to 1800m is interesting but he’s a genuine horse.
13 Chevalier Prince (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be around the mark. He ran a narrow second to Entrusted in that race mentioned above. He got a mile back out of his ground but charged late to just miss out on the win in a tight go. Gets 1.5kg weight pull on that horse here so he commands respect.
Race 4. (17:00) Hong Kong Vase 2400m
2 Glory Vase (Bet Now: $2.15) looks the safe option. Beauty from Japan who won this race in 2019 and did run second here earlier in the year behind Loves Only You, and we saw what that horse did at Del Mar, so the form around him reads so well and with Moreira on, he’ll do me in what is a thin race.
5 Mogul (Bet Now: $10.00) won this race last year. Is he going as well 12 months on? I’m saying no, but you can’t ignore anything that Aidan O’Brien saddles up on this day. He hasn’t set the world on fire in 2021 but was placed at Group l level in Longchamp and was far from disgraced at Del Mar. His best is good enough to give this a shake.
6 Reliable Team (Bet Now: $41.00) is the leader and will give a sight. Led and was too good for them in the Jockey Club Cup three weeks ago, with the front running steer from Derek Leung being an absolute peach. 2400m is the obvious query with him, but he’s got the right racing style.
Race 5. (17:40) Hong Kong Sprint 1200m
3 Danon Smash (Bet Now: $16.00) is a bet here for sure each way. Won this race last year and the speed looks like it will be hot up in front, so he’ll get his chance to finish over the top. He was gallant in defeat last start in the Sprinters Stakes after drawing the car park. He’ll find cover and get last look.
2 Pixie Knight (Bet Now: $2.70) races away from Japan for the first time, so that is an obvious query with him here, but he could be something else. There was a lot of class and quality about his win in the Sprinters Stakes and smashed the clock late in winning. If he brings his best, he’ll go awfully close.
8 Naboo Attack (Bet Now: $10.00) looks the best of the locals. He is bursting to win a big race but his racing pattern will ensure he needs things to fall into place in order for him to win. Things falling into place could well happen here given the amount of speed engaged. Jockey Club Sprint effort was very good and with the speed on in front, he’ll launch late.
Race 6. (18:15) Lord Kanaloa Hcp (c2) 1200m
11 California Spangle (Bet Now: $1.70) looks a good prospect for Tony Cruz. Has won three of his four career outings, the latest seeing him bolt up at this track/distance three weeks ago and ran good time for the class. Good test for him here but confident he can measure up and get the job done.
6 Fantastic Way (Bet Now: $3.90) has done little wrong in his six start career. Really had to dig in late when required to win last time out but what was impressive was the ticker he showed when he had to dig in. He’ll get a lovely run from the draw here and Moreira sticks, which is a positive.
Best version of 3 Master Montaro (Bet Now: $27.00) is certainly capable. Ran over 1400m here two weeks back and was just too bad to be true in a plain effort behind Blaze Warrior. Reckon a fast run 1200m suits him ideally and we know that at his best, he can be an explosive type.
Race 7. (18:50) Hong Kong Mile 1600m
1 Golden Sixty (Bet Now: $1.55) is the best horse in Hong Kong and this isn’t a strong edition of the Mile so it al points to him getting a second straight win in this race. His Jockey Club Mile win was something else in such an electric return to the track. All things being equal, he has a bit on this lot.
3 Indy Champ (Bet Now: $11.00) is back for redemption after being luckless in this race two years ago. He has had a pretty good 2021 despite not winning, his latest run being a very game fourth in the Mile Championship. He will need to improve IMO to beat Golden Sixty but is capable.
9 Excellent Proposal (Bet Now: $31.00) lacks the class of some of these but he is a horse who has talent and I think can sneak a first four spot. He ran in a Class 1 race over this track/distance three weeks ago and he should have won. Just had no luck in the straight. He’s a good horse. Good enough to win here? I say no, but a first four contender.
Race 8. (19:30) Hong Kong Cup 2000m
12 Loves Only You (Bet Now: $2.60) is a world class mare and one of the best in the world as it stands given she has won on the world stage on a couple of occasions, winning the QEll earlier this year at this track/distance and last start was impressive at Del Mar. She’s clearly the one they have to beat on form.
8 Dubai Honour (Bet Now: $3.00) has the Haggas/Marquand combo and we know that pair have dominated on the world stage so it’s a big tick for this horse, who hasn’t exactly set the world on fire but in saying that, his 2021 season has been quite sound, highlighted by a couple of Group ll wins at France before placing in the Champion Stakes at Ascot. Has to be respected.
6 Tourbillon Diamond (Bet Now: $41.00) probably doesn’t have the class to beat some of these, but he’s capable to contend for exotics. Wasn’t a strong field last time out in the Ladies Purse but he wore them down and was strong late. This is his toughest test since the ATC Derby last year, so keen to see how he goes against some big boys and girls.
Race 9. (20:10) Snow Fairy Hcp (c3) 1200m
I’m keen on 14 Gallant Express (Bet Now: $10.00) running well here. He has been excellent in two runs back from a break, both runs seeing him dragged back from wide gates and finding the line strongly. He has a good gate to take advantage of, sit much handy to the speed and still be just as effective at the end.
13 Lucky With You (Bet Now: $2.10) is a son of Artie Schiller for David Hayes that resumes. He has had two career outings and has done little wrong, placing on debut before a narrow but strong. Been given a good break but maps to get a suck run and down in the weights, commands respect.
1 All In Mind (Bet Now: $7.00) has Zac Purton to steer and is the class runner of the field. Hasn’t raced since July 14 when close up over 1200m at Happy Valley in a race which has produced just the one winner, so the form looks tricky, but he’s a good fresh horse and should be strong late.
Race 10. (20:50) Highland Reel Hcp (c3) 1400m
14 Tornado Phantom (Bet Now: $2.25) in the get out. Could he put his hand up as a Derby horse? Resumed over the mile at Happy Valley and got too far back but was good late when a close up fourth. That was on November 24. Back to 1400m I find interesting but an inside gate and Moreira sticking helps.
The unbeaten run of 1 Packing Victory (Bet Now: $3.80) came to a halt last time out over 1200m but the run was quite good considering he had the big weight to carry and it was somewhat of a sit/sprint, so he wasn’t entirely suited, yet just missed. Up to 1400m I like. Just needs luck from the draw.
10 Let’s Do It (Bet Now: $13.00) is hit and miss but his resumption was quite encouraging. That was over this track/distance on November 7 and he charged to the line from the back when a close up fourth to Ima Single Man. Has gate one, so can sit much closer this time around and if he has that finale in the locker, he’ll be dangerous as a knockout hope.
