Attention all, Thoroughbred Breeders Australia has announced a new TBA Learning module focused on promoting industry best practice for preparing horses for the yearling sales.

Specifically developed for breeders and senior leaders, particularly those who are newer to the thoroughbred industry or looking to review, refine or elevate their processes to recognised industry best practice.

Developed in response to industry feedback, the Yearling Sales Preparation module was initiated following feedback from breeders and vendors after the Perth Magic Millions Sale. It reflects strong interest in practical, structured guidance tailored to the realities of modern yearling preparation.

Originally proposed by Thoroughbred Breeders WA, it was quickly recognised that this content would be of value nationally and has therefore been developed for rollout across TBA Learning.

With industry expertise and a strong practical focus, TBA thanks everyone who contributed to the development of the module, including:

  • Kayleigh Walsh – Equine Veterinary Nurse, TAFE NSW Equine Teacher and experienced thoroughbred industry professional
  • Magic Millions Sales and William Inglis & Son
  • Industry experts including Dr Fiona Lacey, Equine Veterinarian of Mogumber Park, WA, and Brent Atwell, Stud Manager at Darling View Thoroughbreds, WA

The module covers preparing a yearling for sale as a detailed, multi-stage process that brings together equine science, horsemanship and professional presentation.

Providing a structured, end-to-end overview of best practice yearling preparation from conception through to the sale ring, it recognises that each stage of development plays a critical role in shaping a yearling’s wellbeing, athletic potential and commercial appeal.

Designed to support informed decision-making and consistent standards across stud and vendor operations, the module includes:

  • Printable factsheets for practical, on-farm reference
  • Clear best-practice guidance aligned with current industry expectations
  • Case studies and real-world examples
  • Supporting videos and resources suitable for both management and staff training

Part of the new Breeders’ Information and Knowledge Hub, the Yearling Sales Preparation module is the first in a new series to be housed within the Hub on TBA Learning.

The Hub has been purpose-built for breeders and vendors, providing practical information and decision support across a range of operational, commercial and welfare-related topics.

It reflects TBA’s commitment to ensuring TBA Learning delivers value not only for employees and staff, but also for breeders and leaders across businesses of all sizes.

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia has also announced that applications are now open for the 2026 AgriFutures Learning and Development Opportunities.

If you’re looking at the next step in your leadership journey or simply investing in yourself, these programs offer valuable opportunities. You can apply for one or more programs through a single application form.
