Tom Ryan, principal of SF Bloodstock, has expressed amazement at the unprecedented strength of the bloodstock market witnessed at Saratoga this week, crediting the surge in buyer interest to a popular Netflix series that has helped attract new money into American racing.
This week’s Fasig-Tipton yearling sale in upstate New York shattered records, with total sales exceeding US$100 million for the first time in the event’s history. The Saratoga Sale, traditionally viewed as the curtain-raiser for the elite yearling auction season in the U.S., drew intense competition from both domestic and international buyers.
Coolmore’s MV Magnier topped the sale, going to US$4.1 million to secure a colt by Into Mischief, one of America’s leading sires. The yearling is the first foal out of the Grade 2-winning Tapit mare Stellar Sound and was one of 222 select lots offered at the prestigious auction.
Ryan noted the surge of interest from new participants in the racing industry, attributing it in part to the growing visibility of the sport through streaming platforms. “We’re seeing fresh faces, new investors, and a global awareness that wasn’t as strong a few years ago,” he said.
