Champion mare Legarto has been snapped up by Yulong Investments for $2.8 million at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale, bringing the curtain down on a stellar racing career.
The five-time Group 1 winner, by Proisir out of the Towkay mare Geordie Girl, was initially purchased for just $90,000 as a yearling in New Zealand before going on to become one of the standout performers of her generation.
Prepared throughout her career by Ken and Bev Kelso, Legarto won 12 of her 24 starts, highlighted by victory in the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington in 2023, alongside four additional elite-level victories in New Zealand.
The six-year-old signed off in perfect fashion earlier this year when she captured the Group 1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie in her final appearance on the racetrack.
Yulongโs Jun Zhang said the mare had immediately captured their attention.
โShe is a marvel, she is a marvel for our whole sale,โ Zhang said.
โWe love her, we fall in love when we first saw her.โ
Zhang also revealed Legarto is expected to support some of Yulongโs newest stallions during the early stages of her broodmare career at Segenhoe Stud, recently acquired by the operation, including Devil Night and Private Harry.
