It’s hard not to believe in the power of the Almighty, or the universe when you see things like WELSH LEGEND (Camelot – Onethingatatime) sprinting quickly to win in class record time on a Saturday.
Especially after she had been rolled as a short-priced favourite the start before at a midweek meeting.
And jockey James McDonald summed it up best. “Well, she just surprised me.
“I know she has always shown ability bit because she was beaten midweek, I am surprised. Today she had a great turn of foot on what is a perfect surface.
“She obviously has made significant improvement from last start.”
And yes, she was third up going into today’s BM 78 race, but it may well have been a helping hand from on high that carried her to victory, with her even money stablemate languishing back in 4th spot.
“I think it was fitting she won today,” said trainer Chris Waller. “On this exact day last year, one of her part-owners passed away.”
Waller stopped short of attributing the massive improvement to God, but you could see that was what he was thinking.
Welsh Legend took her career record to 3 wins now from 23 starts and a nice $329,250 in stakes earnings.
Starting at $6.50 (Palmerbet) she sat with her head on her chest in 3rd spot behind a frantic speed and just over powered them once they turned.
She beat the topple KIS THE BRIDE (Savabeel – I Do) home by 1.5lengths with a long gap to TOSCANINI (Fastnet Rock – Soubrettes) back in 3rd a head clear of the erratic favourite Great House.
The previous record for the 1900m was 1.57.41. Welsh Legend under 57.5kg and fuelled with divine energy, clocked an impressive 1.55.18.
