His nerve in adopting audacious tactics and renowned vigour in a close finish mark Nash Rawiller as an outstanding jockey.
Trainer Joe Pride says astute judgement of a thoroughbred should also be added to that list.
The pair has forged a successful partnership in recent years, most notably through the deeds of star sprinter Eduardo, and when Rawiller speaks, Pride has learned to listen.
The jockey has been integral to the development of emerging sprint mare Weeping Woman and while he is unable to ride her in the Triscay Stakes (1200m) on Saturday due to her light weight, Rawiller’s assessment following her last barrier trial is still ringing in Pride’s ears.
“Nash got off her the other day after her trial and he said, ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if she graduates to being a Group One horse at some point, this mare’,” Pride relayed.
“I was a bit taken aback because I didn’t have her as that, but I have found over the years he is a bloody good judge, Nash.”
Weeping Woman hasn’t raced since taking out the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) in December and holds residual fitness from that campaign.
As does barn mate and evergreen campaigner Coal Crusher, who returns in the Expressway Stakes (1200m).
Runner-up to King Of Sparta in the corresponding race two years ago, Coal Crusher faces mares the ilk of Group 1 winners Joliestar and Lady Shenandoah on Saturday and Pride admits being surprised by the depth of this year’s small but elite field.
“This is a ripper of a version,” Pride said.
“He’s going to be a big price because everybody doesn’t think he’s got the class of the others, but I have kept him up to the mark.
“He had a good hit-out in a trial the other day and went really well. I think he’ll run a cheeky race, and he’ll get out and scoot.”
Coal Crusher, to be ridden by Chad Schofield, is the second roughest of the six starters at $15 while Weeping Woman, who will have Tim Clark in the saddle, is a $4.40 favourite for her assignment.
